Signs of Serious Series Addiction

Sexy SealsAs a reader and an author, I have to admit, I’m addicted to series romance.  Not series, as in Harlequin’s category length books (although I’m admittedly pretty hooked on those) but series as in a number of stories that are connected to each other either by characters, setting or careers.  In the case of my Sexy SEALs series, it’s a crossover of both the careers of the heroes (yes, they all make a career out of not only being a Navy SEAL, but a Sexy SEAL at that) but because SEALs work in teams, the characters often overlap from book to book.

Are you a series addict, too?  In polling readers, I was able to come up with this handy, helpful list of three easy ways to help you identify if you’re addicted.

Are you all about the Author Love?  Often when a reader finds an author whose stories and writing they connect to, they want more. Lots and lots more.  Series are one of the best ways to get that.  You’ll be able to tell if you’re an addict by asking yourself if, upon finding a new author and finishing their book you immediately hit the ‘net in search of every other thing they’ve written.  Extra points if you add all of their books to your wish list.

Another easy way to tell if you’re a series addict is if you find yourself jonesing to becoming a part of the series world.  Revisiting the same series world from book to book lets the reader learn more about the community the characters live in with each story.  After awhile, we want to live there. We imagine ourselves as a regular, we know where to get the best cookies, who to go to if we need answers, which character’s house is tidy and which we’d want to sleep over at.

A SEAL's PleasureAnd the number one sign that you’re a serious series addict?  The characters!  Over and over again I hear readers say they love seeing what their favorite characters are up to long after their story is over.  They love, too, getting to know secondary characters in a story, then later seeing that character get their very own romance.  Series addicts know these characters really well. They wonder what their lives are like after they reach ‘The End’ and they look forward to checking up on them in subsequent books.  Addicts are also heavily invested in other characters getting their own story.  They look forward to seeing how it plays out and sometimes even pick and choose the characters’ love interest in their minds.  When that character’s book is finally out, they dive right in to decide if the author has done justice to the love story those beloved characters deserve.

So… do you have any of the signs?  Are you a series addict?

If so, you might be wondering what to do about it.

As a long-term addict myself, here’s my advice.  Revel in it.  Reread your favorite series from start to finish on a regular basis, keep the heroes high on your list of favorite book boyfriends and carefully haunt the authors’ website or social networks for news on when the next installment is out!  At least, that’s what I do.  Because, you know, we have to feed that addiction!
