It’s that time of year where romance and all the frilly sayings and gestures that go with it isn’t frowned upon. At least, I hope it is. Considering I write romance for a living and so, always have those things on my mind, I probably shouldn’t care what time of year it is. But alas, I do, and I’d like to take this moment to share a few of my favorite romantic movies and why I love them.
You’ve Got Mail is always at the top of my list because from Kathleen and Joe’s meet cute at The Shop Around The Corner, to the moment she wields a knife in his direction while telling him he knows nothing about the bookselling business, these two were simply meant to be. I know, I know, there’s the pesky little fact that they were each in a relationship with someone else at the start of the movie—and normally that’s a huge hurdle for me to jump—but, in this case, I overlook Frank and Patricia and keep my eye on the prize—Kathleen and Joe kissing in the park while Brinkley runs around. It’s the kiss and the dog for me!
Brown Sugar is also a frontrunner from the old-school Hip Hop music to the friends-to-lovers trope that is my all-time favorite. Every character in this movie knew that Dre and Sydney were made for each other, except Dre and Sydney. LOL Which, of course, leads to them both becoming involved in relationships that wouldn’t last. And for them finally to get together only to be ripped apart again is always heart-wrenching for me. Luckily, Dre is smart enough to go and get his woman with that elementary school note. The “When did you fall in love with Hip Hop?”question will always be the epitome of romance for me.
Sabrina is another favorite because poor Linus was the best grumpy hero ever. The set-up of this movie always rubs me the wrong way, but I love the ending, so I let that slide. The way Linus was supposed to be taking Sabrina’s mind off his brother David, and is totally clueless to the fact that he’s actually falling for her is chef’s kiss!
So, there you have it, a few of my favorite romantic movies. My full list is so much longer, just as I’m sure yours is as well. The main point is that we’re enjoying all the feels in these wonderful movies. And not just in February. 😊But since we’re on the subject, please share a few of your romantic favorites.
