INTERVIEW with JoAnn Sky, NO HEARTBREAKER REQUIRED

Please tell us a bit about your new release.

NO HEARTBREAKER REQUIRED is the second of three books in the Biggest Little Love Story series and takes place in Reno, which is known as the “Biggest Little City in the World”.  NO HEARTBREAKER REQUIRED is a sweet, contemporary romance with a bit of western flair. I hope you all love it!

Where do you get story ideas?

Anywhere, really! Things just pop up and grow into ideas. For example, wild horses roam in our neighborhood. Several years ago, my kids and I saw this one horse who was never with the band (horses are pack animals and typically stay in groups, or bands). We began watching for this horse and named him “Socks” because he was a black horse with three white feet – like he was wearing socks. After watching that horse for months, I knew I wanted to write about him. That was the kernel of idea that eventually grew into NO COWBOY REQUIRED (Book 1 of my Biggest Little Love Story series).

What do you do to combat writers’ block?

There are some days when I’m totally productive and the words flow out. Then there are others when I can’t even spell my name right. When I hit a wall, I try to take a break—as in for the rest of the day, or for several days. Sometimes for way longer than I should!  But sometimes there’s a deadline and that kind of extended break just isn’t possible. In that case, I take my dogs on a long walk. I’m a total dog person, and even when my dogs are crazy, they calm me. We currently have three older rescues in our family, one of whom just joined the family last month: a ten-year-old shih tzu who can’t see or hear very well. But he’s getting along with the rest of our pack just fine!

What are you working on now?

In terms of romance, I’m working on the third book in my Biggest Little Love Story series so I can get it to my editor at Entangled. Another project I’m working on is self-publishing two children’s picture books. I have one out already and am getting to release book 2 in that series and then also begin a new series. Both have rescue dog themes. You can read more about them at www.dogsandbooks.com.

  • Cat or dog? Dog, specifically older shelter dogs.

Anything else you’d like to share?

Thank you for inviting me here today. I’d love to share a short excerpt from NO HEARTBREAKER REQUIRED with you! This scene occurs early in the book, when the hero and heroine don’t know each that well and are partners at a friend’s wedding.

“You look great in purple,” he whispered to Starr.

“It’s periwinkle.”

Dang hot was what it was, whatever the name.

“Relax,” he murmured. He could smell her perfume, floral and with a hint of vanilla. “Your perfume. Is it lavender?”

She looked at him liked he’d grown a second head. But he wasn’t totally unfamiliar with women’s perfumes. In fact, he’d represented a fragrance company once and had one hell of a good time with the top saleswoman, testing the company’s new line of massage oils.

“It’s lilac,” she said through gritted teeth.

He tugged Starr’s arm to shift her out of the path of a wayward toddler and, coincidentally, toward him. When she sidestepped the toddler and managed to increase the distance between them a couple more inches, he sighed. “I don’t bite,” he said, voice low.

“Yeah, well, maybe I do,” she muttered.

He pressed his lips together to stop a grin. He doubted she knew how sexy her response was. She was at least ten inches shorter than him, which was much shorter than his usual type. But there was this spark in her blue eyes every time she sparred with him. This woman knew what she wanted, and she didn’t need Spencer to get it. It was refreshing. He couldn’t help but draw in closer. He took a deeper breath. Lilacs were the bomb.

Starr straightened her back, and she took a half step away, as far as she could without it being obvious to the guests. The floral scent dissipated into the space between them. He was surprised at the sudden urge he felt to draw her back and breathe her in. He paused in his step.

“Just. Walk.” Her words pushed out through her fake grin as she tugged his arm to keep walking.

He let out a chuckle and moved forward. “It may surprise you, I’m able to walk and talk at the same time. Though, I’ll tell you a secret.” He leaned his head in, careful not to cross the imaginary line she’d apparently drawn. “I’m still working on the bubblegum thing.”

Her lips twisted in what seemed like an effort to ward off a smile, before her no-nonsense face returned. “I’m not surprised.”

At least they were talking. He’d have her dancing next. It was a game of cat and mouse. One at which he excelled. Anticipation flared in his chest—something he hadn’t felt in months.

Maybe he wasn’t totally out of his element after all.

BCC: NO HEARTBREAKER REQUIRED

They never saw each other coming…

When an avalanche crushes her world, Olympic hopeful Starr Taylor loses her job, her boyfriend, and worst of all, her confidence. She’s working on getting her life back together and moving forward, and it certainly won’t be with Spencer Kensington, the far-too-attractive playboy lawyer she’s forced to play nice with at their friends’ wedding. Unfortunately, Spencer’s trip to Reno gets extended unexpectedly, and Starr suddenly finds herself way too close for comfort with the man she’s quickly realizing is more than he appears.

Spencer is a tough, no-nonsense New York businessman with a no-commitment rule in the bedroom. But a few days of living with Starr, feeding goats and helping her save troubled teens, has him feeling something he can’t identify. In fact, the more Spencer gets to know the surprisingly vulnerable and tempting woman, the duller his superficial life in the city starts to seem. But everything he’s worked for is waiting for him, and as Spencer’s flight back home grows closer, he’s left wondering if the life he has is really the life he wants.
