An idealized writer’s life includes a veranda over looking the Pacific Ocean and majestic sunsets. Margaritas optional. Most writers, however, are stuck at a kitchen table, a converted closet with a snack tray, and a back porch overlooking the neighbor’s back porch. Writers are creative people. We don’t have to remain stuck in bland places. There are locations that can fire your imagination without stripping your bank account. My five favorite writing spots are beautiful and don’t cost anything except time and some gas in the car.
- The ocean: The most important thing to remember here is to protect your computer from sand. I like to bring a chair to keep myself off the ground and to protect myself from kids running by and kicking sand in my face. A footstool is a necessity to as it can be used as a desk.
- A sports arena: This may seem like a crazy place to write, but without the crush of athletes during a practice or game, an arena (or ice rink) is surprisingly quiet.
- A river or lake: There are beautiful parks throughout the country that are empty when kids are at school. Pack a picnic lunch and enjoy a water view. The only drawback for this location is that the silence and tranquility can induce long naps in the sun.
- A golf course: Golf etiquette requires a certain amount of restraint in terms of noise levels. Go to an outside patio at a local golf course and enjoy a glass of chardonnay while watching people humiliate themselves trying to drive their ball away from sand traps.
- Home: Make yourself an oasis at your house. I moved into the sunroom to make myself one with nature as I write. It’s also the place I hang my book covers and various writing awards to remind me what I should be doing while sitting in the room.

She’s on the run…
Brilliant art appraiser Alex Northrop’s ex used stolen art to fund his nefarious activities. Now he wants her dead. But it isn’t just herself she’s worried about – if he discovers who she really is, he’ll kill her family.
Professor Henry Chilton is shocked to find a beautiful stranger passed out in his bed, and even more so when she reveals a priceless painting is a forgery – the painting he’d planned to use to fund a woman’s shelter. She’s mysterious and frightened, and he is determined to discover why.
Alex’s knowledge of art is undeniable—just as Henry’s attraction to her is irresistible. But in order to help him recover the real painting, Alex isn’t just risking exposure…she’s risking her life.
I only wish I could do any of these things!!! I am so easily distracted, I need one of those POD things you park in your yard. My husband could rig it up with air conditioning and light, and I’d be set. I can’t write anywhere that there is something to look at….or I’m looking at it. Outside means trees, grass, squirrels, birds, lawnmowers in the distance, I need to mow the grass, what’s growing over there, is that a hole under the fence? Indoors I write in my chair, preferably with just a lamp and not the big overhead light, or I end up mentally reorganizing my bookshelf or noting the chips in the paint. 🙂
