I am Irish, living in Dublin with my three children, two boys and a girl. We used to live in London but moved back home to the Emerald Isle in 2012. The kids love it, they get so much more freedom to explore and play outside. They also get to see their Grandpa, aunts and uncles as well as tons of cousins.
Their father still lives and works in London and will continue doing so for the foreseeable future. Having a father working abroad isn’t unusual for Irish kids. Our country grew up on emigration — ever listened to the lyrics of the old Irish songs.
I love to read. As I tell my kids, it is the easiest way to escape into a whole different world. You can go to absolutely any country or world you wish without leaving home. My mom used to tell me that she would regularly have to take away a flash light when I was younger so that I would go to sleep on a school night. I read everything from Enid Blyton to Sweet Valley High. My childhood favorites were The Secret Garden and later To Kill a Mockingbird. I nearly burnt the house down on more than one occasion trying to read under the bed covers.
I spent a part of my childhood stuck in bed with a recurring
illness. My Dad used to read to me when I didn’t have
the energy to read myself. He still goes to sleep with a
pile of books by his bed. My fantastic mom (who died in 2009
of cancer) used to say that if we were going on holidays,
the first thing in my suitcase were my books. That was a
long time before ebook readers lol.
