NEW BEGINNINGS FOR A NEW YEAR

NEW BEGINNINGS FOR A NEW YEAR

By Jaycie Cash

Today, January 2, 2012, was definitely a red-letter day: I wrote the first two pages for the epilogue of my second novel, The Split-Family Robinson. That means I should be writing “The End” by this Friday . . . or sometime over the weekend, at the latest. In the immortal words of Fred Flintstone: “Yabba dabba doo!” I’ve gotta say, this is my favorite way to begin a new year to date.

Now, we’re just talking about the first draft here, so it’s gonna be a little while before this book is ready for publication, but that day feels a whole lot closer than it ever has before.

Here’s to new beginnings.

In my first novel, Mrs. Goodfeller, the heroine was trying to create a new beginning for her family by “custom-painting the truth a bit,” for her fellow residents of Scissortail, Oklahoma. Problem is, her plan worked. She and her whole family ended up in mortal danger as a result.
Some of my fellow authors are celebrating new beginnings this month by releasing their latest novels. These books include . . .

Convinced that she needs an investigator who can also play bodyguard, she hires Sam Coppersmith, a specialist in paranormal crystals and amber-"hot rocks." Passion flares immediately between them, but neither entirely trusts the other. Released December 27, 2011, in hardcover, as a mass market paperback, as an audiobook, and as an e-book

It’s not that Micayla Lange is afraid of the clinking she hears coming from the first floor of the empty McMansion she’s housesitting for her uncle Nicco. She’s a cop, after all. It’s just that finding out her boyfriend was cheating on her was enough drama for one night. Now she’s alone on New Year’s Eve, wearing flannel pajamas and wielding a Glock 22 as she zeroes in on the unmistakable source of the sound: Uncle Nicco’s private office.

Jason Davis steals things for a living, so unexpected developments are a natural part of the job. Getting caught red-handed by a hot, pigtail-sporting police officer in what is supposed to be a gangster’s deserted house is just one more twist in the game. Kind of like finding incriminating photos in Nicco Marino’s safe, only to discover the cop — and the security cameras — have gotten a real good look at his face.

Unfortunately for Mick, she also got a good look at the damned pictures. Her “uncle” might love her like family, but if he knows she’s seen evidence that implicates him in the murder of a city councilman, she doesn’t like her chances. Which is why she’s having a hard time reconciling her professional instincts with what she is rapidly concluding is an inescapable fact: She’s about to help a criminal get away with a suitcase full of stolen money. And she’s going with him. Mick and Jason’s race for their lives hurtles them through the dangerous Michigan wilderness on speedboat and snowmobile. As their adventure heats up and their enemies close in, Mick is torn between her duty to the force and the combustible passion engulfing her and her unlikely partner in crime. She’ll have to turn Jason in sooner or later . . . if they survive. But will they ever get a second chance at love?

Released January 2012 (a reissue, first released in 2005)

Welcome, dear reader, to the world of Hetar, a realm of Forest Lords, of Shadow Princes and Coastal Kings. A land of passions, both civilized and savage. Where the social classes know their place, but where anyone can, under the right conditions, advance to the highest pinnacle. This is a place where pleasure is never censured, but encouraged, and where deception and desire may be intertwined. The orderly, elegant veneer of refined Hetar can no longer ignore the rebellion brewing in the Outlands, a dangerous place of both magic and mystery.

From the city that is the very center of Hetar, Lara, the beautiful half-faerie daughter of John Swiftsword, ventures forth on a journey that will awaken her, both body and soul, as she learns the true meaning of love that will last an eternity -- and a searing passion that will change the destiny of Hetar forever.

Creating Hetar and its many characters has been a great challenge for me, but a wonderful and creative endeavor. I hope you will enjoy Lara's tale.

New Year, New Book

by Casey Daniels, author of the PEPPER MARTIN MYSTERY SERIES

Happy New Year!

I can’t think of a better way to kick off a new year than with a new book, and tomorrow, January 3, it’s happening. WILD, WILD DEATH, book #8 in the PEPPER MARTIN MYSTERY SERIES, will hit store (and cyber) shelves.

I’m always excited about sharing one of Pepper’s adventures with readers. After all, she’s the world’s only private investigator for the dead. That means there’s always something interesting (and possibly dangerous) happening in Pepper’s life, and always a ghost tagging along for the fun.

This time, it’s a trip to the great Southwest. You see, Pepper’s been downsized from her job as a tour guide in a historic Cleveland cemetery, and she’s got some time on her hands and is looking for a little excitement. It’s a perfect example of Be Careful What You Wish For, when an odd package arrives in the mail. It’s a ransom note along with a watch that belongs to her friend, cute and scruffy paranormal investigator, Dan Callaghan. If Pepper doesn’t bring the bones of a long-dead Indian who is buried in Cleveland to New Mexico–and fast–the kidnappers say Dan is going to be killed.

Of course, in Pepper’s world, kidnappers are the least of her problems. Figuring out what to wear to a body-snatching is the first. After all, she’s convinced she’s going to end up getting caught, and she wants to look good for her mugshots.

WILD, WILD DEATH takes Pepper to New Mexico and southern Colorado, a part of the country where I’ve spent some time. Like me, she’s bowled over at the beauty of the place, and intimidated by its wildness. If that was all she had to think about, it wouldn’t be a bad little get-away, but once she arrives, the bones gets stolen, bodies start dropping like the desert temperature once the sun goes down, and the Indian who once owned those bones is not happy.

Pepper has to deal with kidnappers disguised as aliens, a too-hot-to-handle Pueblo police chief and one clever murderer–one whose idea of boot hill has nothing to do with Jimmy Choo.
