Why I Love Second Chance at Love Romances

by Caridad Pineiro

First of all, thanks to my Writerspace friends for letting me visit today to chat about WHAT HAPPENS IN SUMMER (June 5, 2018), my new release in the At the Shore Contemporary Romance series!

Writers are readers too and one of my favorite kinds of stories to read is a second chance romance.  As I wrote ONE SUMMER NIGHT and all the characters came to life, I realized that Connie Reyes and Jonathan Pierce were the perfect characters for a second chance at love story.

When we first meet Connie and Jon in ONE SUMMER NIGHT, we realize that these two characters have a past together and you wonder what happened between them.  You also see that there is still a lot of fire between them which makes you wonder if that fire won’t erupt into more as they are constantly thrown together because of the romance between Connie’s best friend Maggie and Jonathan’s older brother Owen.

So if there is still so much passion there, why couldn’t they make it work?

I loved creating Connie and Jon’s backstories and the issues they have that drove them apart.

WHAT HAPPENS IN SUMMER opens with Connie and Jon totally in love and thinking about a future together when it all goes South.  Their summer fling brings misery as they are both too very different people with very different life goals.  But people change and what they want out of life can sometimes change as well.

Connie, who always wanted to be a partner in a big New York City law firm, finds herself stuck in a job where her intelligence and hard work are not recognized.  She knows it’s time to leave, but it’s hard to deal with ending that part of her life.  Especially as she watches her best friend Maggie fall in love and worries how that will change a friendship that has always been her cornerstone.

Jonathan has always known he wasn’t meant for a 9 to 5 job even though he knows Connie needs a 9 to 5 kind of man.  As much as he loves her, Jon knows he has to follow his own path to be happy.  But he also hopes that one day their paths may cross again and that this time, their differences will be things that bring them together instead of driving them apart.

When Maggie and Owen decide to get married, Connie and Jon’s will cross and the passion that flares between them will be impossible to deny.  But will that passion be enough to overcome the issues of their past and the differences that still exist between them?

Second chances at love are so much fun, aren’t they?

The Vestal Virgins

On my recent trip to Rome to finish researching St. Cecilia’s life for my historical fiction novel, Virgin Martyr, I spent some time at the Temple of Vesta and the home of the ancient Roman Vestal Virgins. One of my purposes in writing this book was to investigate how attitudes about women’s sexuality and social… Read More
