Where are Your Light Bulbs Shining?

brainstorm-photoOne of my favorite things in the world is to brainstorm.

Whether by myself or as part of a group I love to come up with ideas. It can be for anything: marketing plans, titles for projects, plots for my books, whatever. I simply find the process of thinking up something workable, catchy . . . new to be fun and exciting.

You would not be the first person to find this a sadly dull hobby/preferred activity. Truth be told, I’m more than a tad lazy. The fact that brainstorming takes little, if any, physical action on my part is an added bonus in my mind.

And let’s be honest, while brainstorming probably can’t hold a candle to driving a race car or climbing Mount Everest for chills and thrills, I’ve also never had to increase my life insurance or nurse frostbite as a result of my sedentary approach to good times.

But there’s just no denying the wonderful feeling that comes from finding a great solution to a problem or goal.

A young man in the news today knows what I’m talking about. Only 14-years-old he came up with a suggestion, as part of a science project, that will save the federal government $136 million dollars annually.

What’s the idea? Change the font used for federal publications from Times New Roman to Garamond. This will use less ink, to the tune of all those millions. If state governments make the same change, a total of $234 million will be saved. Annually.

I didn’t catch this youngster’s name but major kudos to him.

Not only for coming up with this brilliant, easy and very doable way to save millions of our tax dollars, but for having the guts to speak up and make his good idea known.

Haven’t we all had light bulbs go off in our heads at some point in our lives that we didn’t have the courage to pursue or to share with others? Haven’t we all shied away from making suggestions for fear of thinking that someone else would have already implemented our idea if it were as great as we thought or as simple to put into action?

I know I have.

I said I like to brainstorm. I didn’t say I’m a fan of sharing the results with others, at least not all the time. But heck if I’m not going to try to suck it up and let the light bulbs that come on in my head shine for all the world to see from here on out.

I’ve been inspired!
