What’s so good about being the guy in the White Hat?

by Beth Williamson / Emma Lang

BethWilliamson_James800As a western romance writer, I have all sorts of heroes in hats, the cowboy kind that is. Not all of them are honorable men though. *gasp* Yes, it’s true, sometimes my heroes don’t where the white hat.

I am very much the kind of writer who tries to stay true to real life. I’ve had heroines who are homeless, disabled, bitchy and even scarred physically. I’ve had heroes who are drunks, suffer from PTSD, or missing a limb. Yes, the book is an escape from reality but in order to identify with the hero/heroine, I feel like they have to feel real to me, and consequently, to the reader.

So my heroes can also be bad guys, who find their way to a good place with the love of a heroine. I’ve had heroes who are truly badasses, men you would not want courting your daughter.

My Circle Eight series has a number of men who don’t wear the white hat. They’ve just not met the right woman. 🙂

The seventh book in the series, JAMES, hits the proverbial shelves on Tuesday, August 18. This is the second to last book in the series and was an emotional roller coaster for me. The story follows Catherine “Cat” Graham and James Gibson.

We first met Cat when she was seven in MATTHEW, the first book. We first met James when he was fifteen in VAUGHN, the third book in the series. Each made choices that set them on a path to loneliness and heartache.

And then their world changes when someone steals from the Circle Eight ranch and circumstances throw James and Cat together. She fights the idea that she needs help, anybody’s help, least of all the man who introduced her to passionate kissing. James fights the idea that he’s worthy of anyone’s love. He’s the man who lit the Circle Eight ranch on fire when he was fifteen, a dark mark on his soul to match the others he’s collected in his life.

You may not like James going into this book, but by the end, you’ll love him as much as I do. Who doesn’t like a dark, tortured hero? James personifies what I want to see happen to all badass men, redemption. I find the bad heroes are the ones who steal my heart, especially those in the black hat riding a horse. 😉
