Truth and Consequences of Psychic Abilities

Joshua's Mistake_JPGThe Psychic Mates series is all about a world where organizations of psychic law enforcement and evil psychic mercenaries exist and the battle between good and evil rages on between them. I cannot even begin to tell you how much fun these books are to write. With each new character, I come up with a new psychic (psi) skill that we haven’t seen in a previous book.

When you’re walking down the street and a good looking guy stares at you, wouldn’t you like to know if he’s thinking, Wow, that’s one hot girl or what was she thinking, wearing red and green together, she looks like a Christmas tree? Maybe you locked yourself out of the house. It would be great if instead of calling a locksmith, you could call on your telekinetic skills and trip the tumblers with your mind. That’s just two examples of how I come up with skills for my characters. But Telepathy and Telekinesis are psychic skills that have been written about many times in both fictions as well as theorized in hundreds of books.

I wanted to take my characters to new places too. Tessa from JOSHUA’S MISTAKE can stop time for a few seconds and during that time alter space. Rain from TRAINING RAIN (coming this Fall) can heal and communicate with animals. Joshua has the ability to tap into a power source and shoot electrical bolts from his fingertips. Pretty cool right?

So I come up with these fantastic abilities for my characters, then what happens? Well, if they have some skill, they have to use it. There’s no sense in being able to stop time if there’s never an occasion where you have to save the day by altering an outcome. And if you use it, what is the cost? Because with all things in life, there must be balance. 😉

Mind reading seems like a harmless skill, but there is always a price. Maybe the woman of your dreams, your psychic mate, hates to have her thoughts invaded. Can you stop yourself from taking a peek?

In JOSHUA’S MISTAKE one of my favorite scenes is when Troth Banta, a deadly mercenary bent on stealing psi powers, attacks, forcing all the other psychics to block him. The fallout from not being able to use their abilities is devastating, but the price of using them cost one agent everything.

Do you believe people can move mountains? Is charm a psychic ability, what about intuition? If a mother senses her child is in danger across the country, is that psi and what’s the cost of knowing? What’s your special sixth sense?

A.S. Fenichel

Accused of treason and the murder of her Psychic Special Forces team, Tessa is in the custody of the FBI. She’s shocked and terrified when the most powerful Psi Agent in the world shows up to probe her mind and discover her guilt or innocence.

Joshua never expected to find a victim of one of his probes attractive, but he can’t seem to leave her behind when all hell breaks loose. Saving the stunning blonde means being drawn into a psychic war that will definitely end his career—and likely both of their lives.

The rhythm of their psychic auras hums to perfection and neither can fight the bond, but it’s all ripped away by a madman with a grudge. Tessa falls into a coma, and Joshua will have to risk his heart and soul to pull her back from the brink.

Flawed Characters in Fiction

by Diane Alberts One of the things that writers struggle most with is making our characters realistic, likeable, kind, and yet…flawed. Yep, you heard me. Flawed. No one likes perfection, and let’s be honest, perfection isn’t realistic. Have you ever met someone who was PERFECT? And if you have, how much do you want to… Read More
