Top Three Most Asked Author Questions…

Thank you for joining me as I celebrate the release of SMALL TOWN, BIG SECRETS – book 2 of my TRINITY RIVER novels. For a little fun, I decided to talk about the three most frequently asked questions I get as a sweet, romance writer.

I’m often asked about my favorite romantic comedies. I believe readers ask this to get a sense of who I am and what I enjoy when I’m not writing. I started putting together a list and it dawned on me – my top five happen to include my top five heartthrobs. Coincidence? Probably not. Here’s a list of my leading men and then my leading romances. In no particular order…Jude Law, Richard Gere, Matthew McConaughey, Patrick Dempsey, Patrick Dempsey. (Yes, saving the best for last and giving him two votes!) And after looking at pictures…I need to add a bonus heart throb…Josh Lucas. 😉

Here’s the movie countdown –

#5 How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days – “I miss you Benny Wenny boo boo, boo boo boo!” “Our love fern, you let it die!” “Frost yourself.”

#4 The Holiday – “Iris, in the movies we have leading ladies and we have the best friend. You, I can tell, are a leading lady, but for some reason, you’re behaving like the best friend.” “I don’t know, but I think what I’ve got is something resembling, Gumption!” “I’m Amanda. Loner, loser and complicated wreck!”

#3 The Wedding Planner – “Well, I figure they have less artificial coloring because chocolate is already brown.” “You saved my shoe.” “The F.O.B is M.I.A.”

#2 Pretty Woman –“I appreciate this whole seduction thing you’ve got going on here, but let me give you a tip: I’m a sure thing.” “I want the fairy tale.”

#1 Sweet Home Alabama – “So I can kiss you anytime I want.” “Now what kind of a wife would I be if I didn’t pick up after my husband?” “The kind that don’t live here.” “I can’t control her any more than I can control the weather.” “You’re the first boy I ever kissed Jake, and I want you to be the last.” (Sounds like Kayla and Dylan in Back in the Rancher’s Arms!😉)

And here’s the rest of my list – The Wedding Planner, My Best Friend’s Wedding, Sleepless in Seattle, You’ve Got Mail, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, The Runaway Bride, Maid in Manhattan, Rumor Has It, Made of Honor, Serendipity, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Kate and Leopold, Fool’s Gold, Notting Hill,…you get the picture. I’m sure I’ve forgotten a few. I love happily-ever-after romances that are funny. My favorites are fast becoming golden oldies, but they never get too old to watch!

Another popular question I’m asked – How do you decide the names for your characters? This one is probably a different answer than you would expect. I create my characters without a name in the planning stages. Then, after I know more about them, I go through the alphabet for first and last names (separately) and rattle off the first thing that comes to mind. If it fits, I use it, if not, I keep going through the alphabet until I find one that matches the characters personality. When my system fails me, I turn to a Google search until I find a name I like. Once, I even had readers send me favorite names they’d like to see in a story. I used several of those in some of the next stories coming out later this fall.

The other most popular question – How do you create the ideas for a new story since you’ve written so many books? This one is harder to answer. Creativity comes to me from many sources. It can be driving down the road and I see something. I visit someplace that gives me an idea. A lot of times, I theta wave an idea (which is the period of time between sleep and waking in the morning when you brain is active, but your body isn’t.) Another way comes from themes. For instance, my Holidays in Hallbrook series – they all involve a holiday, a child, and a dog, and of course, a happily-ever-after romance. The holiday drives my character choices and then the storyline. Luckily, there’s never a shortage of ideas. 😊

*******************

To save her son, shy but determined waitress Becky McAllister would do just about anything. But she never expected “anything” to include the brother of the man who broke her heart.

Steve Parker needs a wife, now, if he has any hopes of winning his local DA election and becoming the advocate for the underserved he’s always dreamed of being. The sweet waitress seems like just the person—if he can get her to agree.

One year of marriage—no strings, no personal attachments. Becky gets the insurance funds she needs for her son’s surgery while Steve’s poll ratings soar. Neither planned on a commitment in their future, so they should have no problem making it through the year without getting emotionally involved, right?

Except Becky’s holding on to a secret from her past—one that would change everything.
