The Right Wrong Turn

by Rebecca Barrett

Sometimes the best things happen when you’re in search of something else. My very dear friend has a notoriously bad sense of direction. It is legend in our inner circle. When in doubt, she always turns left. To add insult to injury, she always insists on her chosen course, knowing and acknowledging that she has a horrible sense of direction. Bless her heart.

That’s how Trouble, the Sherlock of black cat detectives, ended up in Savannah, Georgia. We started out for Key West. You see where this is going? Needless to say, her sense of direction was spot on. The minute we arrived in Savannah the characters for Trouble in Dixie began to invade my thoughts. Julia came full blown into my mind. Mitch soon followed and as the writing took off, Aunt Ethel and Chappie tried to take over the story. If you want to know the results of that adventure, you can download a copy of Trouble in Dixie here for only .99 between April 17-21.

A happy ending and a great adventure resulted in a fun, sassy story from our super sleuth. But I still needed Trouble to get to Key West. That was the story still to be told. Fortunately, I have other friends who have a better sense of direction. Larry and Ginger McSween puddle-jumped with me down to the southernmost tip of the U.S. and we had a ball at Mystery Fest Key West.

After a very spirited debate on Facebook over two proposed covers, the right side won–meaning my favorite. The key was to get that tropical vibe as well as hint at the mystery. Here’s the new cover for Trouble in Paradise. How did we do?

Inspiration struck and Ginger (the fictional one), proprietress of The Paradise Bed and Breakfast, managed to cross paths with Trouble. Of course, there’s a guy in the picture with the nickname of Trout, a dead body in a locked room, and a lost treasure.

Trouble in Paradise will be released May 7, 2018, and I couldn’t be more thrilled. If you’d like a free e-book of Trouble’s latest adventure, sign up for my newsletter and I’ll send you a link to download a copy.

Rebecca Barrett writes historical fiction, post-apocalyptic fiction (writing as Campbell O’Neal), children’s stories, and short stories of life in the South. An avid reader all her life and a product of “front porch” socializing, she became a story-teller at an early age. Her current novel, Trouble in Paradise (available now), features that handsome, sleek, black cat detective, Trouble. This is a new series with multiple authors (The Mad Catters) who follow the antics of super-sleuth Trouble as he lands in first one crime scene then another. Of course, the humans help a little. These romantic mysteries are fun and light hearted and just perfect for a beach read or a rainy day. Visit the author’s website at rebeccabarrett.com to enjoy some of her short stories.
