Stick to your Genre!

alaskanexposure_msrWhy do I write in so many different and varying categories?

I’ve been told by more than one party that I should pick a genre and stick to it. “You have to create a brand.” “It’s too confusing for your readers if you write in more than one genre.” That’s what they tell me.

I say, “Pish.” Readers are smart!

Okay, I admit, it’s unconventional to write sweet, Regency romance, Erotic paranormal and for the first time erotic contemporary all under the same name. And I’m not promising that I won’t write something entirely different next. There, I said it. I’m not going to choose. I don’t want to say, I write in this one box and no others. I’m never going to listen when people tell me what I should be writing, though I accept that some people always will.

I write the story that calls to me. I usually have several in my head at one time and the one that makes the most noise is the one that gets written. It’s as simple and slightly schizophrenic as that.

There are many wonderful and vastly successful authors who only write historical romance. I read them. I love them. But I promise you they write that genre because those are the stories that come to them in the middle of the night or during a long, boring car ride whilst staring blindly out the passenger side window. I like to believe that if a great contemporary idea flashed into that historical authors head, she’d write it and be proud of her work.

I suppose I could use different pen names for each of the different types of books, but I decided readers are smart enough to figure out from the cover and back cover burb if they’d be interested in the story. Do you stop reading every future book from an author because he/she wrote a different kind of book than the last one?

If I wasn’t open minded about what I’ll write I might never have gone ahead with my most recent change of genre. ALASKAN EXPOSURE, my first erotic contemporary romance. It has just hit your virtual book seller’s shelves. I hope this story will touch your heart and curl your toes the way it does mine.

Here’s a bit about ALASKAN EXPOSURE:

Finally recovering from a devastating divorce, Charley is given the opportunity of a lifetime when she’s offered a job shooting photographs for an Alaskan cruise catalogue.

Kyle loves his life. The ship’s playboy first officer has his future all worked out and it doesn’t involve falling for the beautiful new photographer.

The two find passion and comfort on the high seas and Charley learns the joys of being completely uninhibited when the partner is just right. But in eight short days asfenichelshe’s going to walk off the ship and Kyle’s going to start his next voyage without her. Can Kyle prove to Charley that they’re more than just hot sex? Sacrifice is the only way to stay together, but the price might just be too high.
