My Top 5 Book Boyfriends by Maggie Mae Gallagher

With my upcoming release, The Fixer Upper, I have been thinking a lot about my favorite book boyfriends. Not just because I adore them, but why I feel that way about each of them. What is it about the hero that strikes my fancy and makes me yearn for them to step out of the pages into the real world? Okay, I know I’m not alone on this as weird as it may seem.

So, I sat down and considered out of all the books I’ve read (that number is in the thousands at this point). Then cobbled together this rather eclectic list of my favorite book boyfriends.

  1. Aragorn – The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien

When I think of a knight that I would want to have rescue me from the forces of darkness, if I was in a fairy tale of course, it would be Aragorn from Lord of the Rings. He’s fearless and honorable, carries his love for Arwen into battle and never strays even when the opportunity presents itself.  He’s a bit of a badass in battle, always willing to jump in the fray to save another with no thought for his own safety. He’s so dreamy, it should be a crime.

  1. James Fraser – Outlander by Diana Gabaldon

If I were ever to get sucked back in time, I would want my very own James Fraser on the other side to take me off to his castle. I adore him so much, that I modeled my hero, Jared from Her Master & Commander by my alter-ego Anya Summers, after the actor who portrays James in the television show. James Fraser is stubborn, thoughtful, loyal to a fault and brave. Plus, he’s Scottish and has the whole accent thing going for him.

  1. Jericho Barrons – The Fever Series by Karen Marie Moning

Barrons is gritty and primal with a suave debonair sheen that barely covers the animal hiding beneath. He is the apex predator circling the weak not to kill them but to sneer at their incompetence. He’s bullish, snarky, makes you want to do him bodily harm, and yet, when the chips are down, he’s the best man to have in your corner. He is the proverbial bad boy that you wonder if you will survive a night with him but are willing to chance it. I know I would.

  1. Jesse Cameron – One Wore Blue by Heather Graham

I fell for Jesse as a teenager and it has been a life long enduring crush. He’s the epitome of the alpha male in a quiet, responsible way. He is both the thinker and the doer, with a gift of foresight (nothing preternatural), but that unerring instinct for judging a situation and understanding how it will play out. He’s loyal and steadfast. I quite simply adore him.

  1. Sawyer Thompson – Head Over Heels by Jill Shalvis

Okay, I have a teensy thing for guys in uniform that carry a badge. And if I could wish a guy into existence, it would be Sawyer. Why? He’s a force to be reckoned with. Loyal, intelligent, brave, and a caretaker. He protects all those who come into his sphere, makes the hard choices, and at the end of the day will stop to pick up a dinner on the way home. Seriously, I would fight for him, MMA Thunderdome style.

There were many, many more who came close but did not make the top five. Who are some of your favorite book boyfriends and why?

Thanks for stopping by! Be sure to check out my upcoming release, The Fixer Upper, available September 6th and see if Sheriff Nate Barnes makes your list!

THE FIXER UPPER

Abby Callier is more in love with Shakespearean heroes than any real man, and she’s beginning to wonder if there is life for her outside the pages of a book. It doesn’t help that her esteemed parents tend to view her as they would one of their science experiments gone wrong. On the eve of finishing her dissertation, she escapes her staid existence to live in the house she inherited from her Great Aunt Evie in the small town of Echo Springs, Colorado. Because, let’s face it, when a woman starts comparing her life to horror films, it might be time for a break.

Sheriff Nate Barnes believes in law and order and carefully building the life you want. In his spare time, he has been remodeling his house in the hope that one day it will be filled with the family he makes. But Nate doesn’t like drama or complications and tends to avoid them at all costs. And yet, when Miss Abigail Callier, his newest neighbor, beans him with a nine iron, he can’t help but wonder if she might just be the complication he’s been searching for all along. It doesn’t hurt that he discovers a journal hidden away by the previous tenant and decides to use Old Man Turner’s advice to romance Abby into his life.

Abby never expected her next-door neighbor, the newly dubbed Sheriff Stud Muffin, to be just the distraction her world needed. The problem is she doesn’t know whether she should make Echo Springs her home, or if this town is just a stopover point in her life’s trajectory. And she doesn’t want to tell Nate that she might not be sticking around—even though she should because it’s the right thing to do, the honest thing—because then all the scintillatingly hot kisses with the Sheriff will come to an abrupt halt. Did she mention that he’s a really great kisser?
