Let’s Take a Break

The Last Rule of Makeups is a reunited lovers/second chance romance, and it’s the third book in the steamy Breakup Bash series.

One of my favorite parts of the book is the first five lines:

Corinne Ross removed the turquoise stiletto-heeled pumps from the box on the floor next to her chair in the shoe store. She slipped them on, and after fastening the straps around her ankles, she rose to her feet and sank into alluring, red- soled, four-inch-high perfection.

Fashion Therapy Friday.

It had the ability to turn nightmares into fairytales, tears into smiles, and shit into glitter-filled, sparkly rainbows. At least temporarily, and after her crazy work week, she needed a huge dose of happy.

I think we can all relate to Cori’s need for a break. During this pause, our circumstances don’t change, but for a brief moment we can forget about them. And from a practical point of view, breaks are healthy. They restore our motivation and our energy level as well as boost creativity.

In The Last Rule of Makeups, Cori’s “Fashion Therapy Friday” doesn’t end like she expects. Her live-in boyfriend breaks up with her, and a few months later, she attends the Breakup Bash with her friends—a private party for women celebrating their break-ups—but she’s actually celebrating. The fact that she devoted years to the wrong guy wakes her up to take a closer look at her personal life. She makes a deal with herself to take a different type of break—no guys for six months. But then she runs into her ex-ex-boyfriend, Grey Latham, and he challenges her plan.

I think we can all understand this situation, too. We have a specific agenda in mind for our extended pause, and all of a sudden life throws a curve ball. But later in the story, Cori’s friend Nat gives her some good advice about her past relationship and looking forward:

“Right now, you need someone who makes you laugh and reminds you that happiness in a relationship really does exist….Someone who reminds you that someday, when it’s time, you’ll have that again with the right person…But you definitely have to stop thinking about Kevin and overanalyzing what you did or didn’t do with him. It’ll just make you bitter and get in the way of everything good in your life.”

Nat’s comment is a great reminder that a break also gives time to focus on the things that add value to life. It allows for a chance to connect or reconnect with the people who highlight the good that’s easy to miss in the midst of it all. A break can help us take an expanded view of life and our decisions, and possibly discover something unexpected and wonderful.

As far as Cori’s situation, the sizzling details about what happens when Mr. Right has the worst timing is in The Last Rule of Makeups. I hope you’ll take a nice long pause to read Cori and Grey’s story.

The First Rule of Hook-Ups (Book 1)

Someone once told me that there are worse things than being left at the altar. Well, not many, in my experience. That was six months ago, though, and my life has moved on. Heck, I have a new job lined up and I’m leaving town.

But I can’t deny that my love life kind of sucks.

That’s why I let my friends convince me to join them for Club Escapade’s Breakup Bash. And we might just be disillusioned enough to actually enjoy it. Last time we were here, it was for my bachelorette party. That night, I met one of the dancers — Raphael — and when he flirted with me, I almost forgot I was engaged. And there’s a part of me that never forgot him.

Now, it seems my friends have wandered off and I’m thinking about calling it a night. Until the music begins and I see Raphael, my secret fantasy, on stage. And this time, I’m definitely not engaged…

Rules of a Rebound (Book 2)

Natalie Winters thought she’d married the man of her dreams…but her marriage ended way too soon in a nightmarish divorce. She even has to share custody of the dog! The stress is killing her, so she decides to take a night off and attend the Breakup Bash—a private party for women celebrating their breakups—with her friends.

Former executive security specialist turned bartender Rome Collier is drawn to the woman easily trading sexy banter with him. And if she wants the “Do Me” condoms she accidentally throws across the counter at him, she’ll have to claim them…personally. Their flirtation turns into so much more, and every scintillating night they spend together is better than the last.

Strong, protective…and hot, Rome is everything Natalie ever wanted in a man. All she has to do is convince him he’s more than a rebound.
