Interview with the Husband of a Romance Writer

by Cathryn Fox

BettingOnTheWrongBrother_500The other day a guy my husband knew found out I was a romance writer, and he was fascinated, and started throwing questions at my husband. At that time, I thought, what is it like to be the husband of a romance writer who writes the HOT STUFF? So I decided to interview him. Here is what he had to say.

1. How do people respond when they find out you’re married to a romance writer who writes the HOT STUFF?

Lots of teasing, jokes, or what I like to call, ‘the grin’. But I’ve come to understand what that grin really means. You’re one lucky guy. LOL. I guess they think my wife gets all her ideas from me, and practices the positions to make sure they work. Does she?  I’ll never tell. <g>

2. What is it like to be married to a romance writer who is in dreamland most of the time?

It’s fine until we go out to a restaurant, the mall, the movies, anywhere really, and she’s constantly listening in to everyone else’s conversations. She tells me it’s for research. I say she’s nosey. She eavesdropped long before she ever became a writer. True story: One time she stared at a guy so hard at Wendy’s restaurant he offered her a bite of his burger. She was mortified, and made us eat the rest of our food in the car.  (Cathryn here…yeah, that did happen. OY!)

3.  What is romance to you? How do you romance your wife?

She’s easy to please. (I bet you’re thinking she told me to say that.) Seriously though, I’ve surprised her a time or two. Our first date 30 years ago we watched Fast Times at Ridgemont High. A few years back for our anniversary, I bought the movie and she was so touched. Now we make it a tradition. The things she finds really romantic though, are me doing laundry, vacuuming, washing the windows! She took a picture at Christmas time of me washing the window, and posted about a real romance hero.  I think romance is the little daily things, not the huge show once a year.

4.  Your wife reads, writes, and looks at pictures of hot guys all day. Does that bother you?

I often walk in to her office and see her looking at pictures. It’s for research, she tells me. I roll my eyes. I’m not the jealous type, and hey, I’m the one that gets to go to bed with her every night, and I get the benefit of her writing hot romance and looking at men all day. Heh heh.

Well there you have it. My husband’s view on romance and living with a romance writer. I hope you enjoyed the male perspective!
