In Defense of Fluff

Some people read romantic comedies like THE DATING DEBATE and 99% FAKING IT and dismiss them as fluff. I’m okay with that. I’m pro fluff. Fluff is good. And I’m not talking about the kind you get from snarfing down a few too many double stuffed Oreo’s. I’m talking about happy fluffy stories where nothing too terrible happens and you know that when the book is over all the characters will still be alive and most of them will be in a better state of mind and more than likely in a happy relationship. There will be conflict and lessons learned along the way, but there will definitely be a happily ever after complete with some swoon-worthy kisses.

I think the world needs more fluff (not to mention swoon-worthy kisses). We need things that make us smile and give us warm fuzzies. Too much reality isn’t good for your mental health. Every time you turn on the news or pick up a newspaper (people still do that, right?) you are assaulted with messages about how terrible and unsafe the world has become. My grandfather used to stomp around his house muttering, “The world is going to hell in a hand basket.”

As a child that didn’t make much sense to me. Now that I am solidly in the adult stage of life I understand. Scary crap happens all the time. Some people are good, and some people are not right in the head. As responsible adults it’s our job to help those that we can and work for a better tomorrow. To keep from rocking in a corner sucking down entire bags of double stuffed Oreo’s, we need fluff.

Readers read to escape. I realize sometimes a reader wants a grand, sweeping adventure with other worldly creatures who fight to the death. I enjoy those books too. My shape shifting dragon series, Going Down In Flames, has much bigger stakes than my Sweet Romantic Comedies. THE DATING DEBATE and 99% FAKING IT are stories about young adults figuring out who they are, who they want to become, and who they want by their side while they are making the journey.

No matter how old you are, high school left its mark on you in some way. My mother still has dreams that she’s late for class because she can’t remember the combination to her gym locker.  She’s been out of high school for more than fifty years. And yes, there are probably some people out there who had the perfect high school experience, but I’ve never met one of them. So, if you’d like to relive that tumultuous time of life and are in the mood for some happy fluff that will make you smile check out THE DATING DEBATE or 99% FAKING IT. Both are stand alone reads but are better enjoyed in this order.
