Hello and thank you for having me on the blog today! So excited to be here.
So I as a writer I have a bad habit of falling in love with the characters I write. LOL. There’s something about creating a character. Whether it’s the hero or heroine or even the villain, a lot goes into determining the type of “person” they’re going to be.
I normally create a character sketch before I begin, so I can get to know them. What they look like, personality traits, likes, dislikes, hobbies, etc. It’s my introduction to them as I try to flesh them out and figure out what is going to make them tick as I write their story.
I love perfectly imperfect heroes. A little broken, mysterious, more than what you see on the outside. Yet, someone who wants to be loved and fall in love (even if a little reluctant at first). In my book, Where There Be Humans, my hero, Pudge doesn’t quite fit the regular formula for the “hot, buff, superhero” hero-type. He’s a bit clumsy at first and kind of a comedic sidekick, but the one thing he is, is devoted to the heroine. As the story progresses the reader gets to see there’s more to him than just this superstitious BFF. He’s kind, honorable, loyal, and turns pretty B.A. as they travel through the Outer Realm. He becomes an equal with the heroine.
For my heroines, I like them to be strong, but still have vulnerability so the reader can relate to them. For Ivy, in Where There Be Humans, she’s very strong, a warrior, yet deep down she’s kind of unsure of herself because she doesn’t always fit in with those around her due to the fact that she’s only half goblin. Sometimes, she tries to make up for that by fighting harder during training to prove herself and show she’s ready to be a part of the King’s Council. It’s like you want to just hug her and protect her from those around her, but also cheer her on as she ventures out on the biggest mission of her life. You want her to best the nobles around her and put them in their places.
But stories aren’t just about the heroes and heroines. Everyone loves a great villain; someone we all love to hate. And the best ones are the ones where you almost feel sorry for them. Sympathize with them for being the way they are. In Where There Be Humans there are a few different villains, each with varying degrees of evilness. Some are wolves in sheepskin, where you don’t really realize they’re as bad as they are until you start to read more about them. Others start off bad, and well, just get worst. Even so, I love creating these dark, monstrous people.
One of the worst parts of creating characters though, is when you know something bad is going to happen to them or they’re planned to be killed off. I’ve definitely cried over writing a character death. Because by this point, I’ve normally become super attached to them. So yeah, I love all the characters I write, good, bad, or indifferent.
What about you? Do you have book characters you’ve fallen in love with?
***GIVEAWAY*** $25.00 Amazon Gift Card
Most definitely from the hero, heroine, secondary characters, even the love-to-hate evil ones, and sometimes their animals as well. Especially too in a series when you get to see a character over various books.
Ahh…exactly. I love series. It kind of lets you grow with the characters. Sometimes I hate for the series to end because I don’t want to say goodbye to characters 🙂
I know I had a mad crush on Edward Cullen when I was reading the Twilight series. I might still have a minor crush years later.
Twilight is a great example (I was team Jacob hahaha)…but I was so excited for each book (and movie) in this series.
I fell in love with Toby King from Finding Home (it’s a recent romance on Amazon by Candy York) because he would be the grandfather figure I would always have loved to have in my life, but alas I never had one.
I haven’t read this one yet. I might have to look into it!
Not fallen in love with, but I think a good book gets you attached to at least the main character.
Exactly! A good book will make you care about the characters in it.
I’ve grown to love a few characters, especially when I get attached to a series.
Series always have me coming back for more… LOL. But then I’m sad when they end.
I really liked George Holloway from Katie Ruggle’s Gone Too Deep.
Oohhh, another one I haven’t read. I love hearing about books from other readers. However, it just makes my buy/read piles that much bigger. LOL.
not really
Awww…not one? LOL. Just teasing. Thanks for stopping by!
There are so many books that I wish the characters were real – and yes, I’d fall in love – thanks for the contest
Yesssss….hahaha…I’m like can I transport this character here now?

Oh yes! I am head-over-heels with Lord Valentine from Grace Burrowes The Virtuoso. All of the brothers in that series are to die for, but he just wrapped himself around my heart. Wish he could materialize and wrap himself around ME!
