Help Wanted!

This is my first blog post at Writerspace, and I’m so delighted to be here!  I’m probably new to most of you, even though I’ve been writing for a long time—first for Harlequin SuperRomance, then Heartwarming, followed by Love Inspired and Love Inspired Suspense, the publisher’s inspirational lines. For now I’m focusing on self-publishing, which is proving to be an exciting adventure!

It’s fun having complete control over every aspect of the publishing process—though it has come with a steep learning curve and some definite angst along the way.  Covers, for example.

When you cruise through Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Apple or other online retailers, do book covers make a big difference as to whether or not you stop scrolling and decide to consider a given book?  Do certain colors catch your eye? Covers with a couple, or a single person, or no people at all?

I’d really love to hear your thoughts, because I’m in a bit of a dither over the cover you see here. When my cover artist first showed me the final version, I thought it was really pretty. She is an amazing designer.  But…my “brand”—what readers expect from me when they buy my books—is something much more specific. Should I ask her to work with that instead?

At the top of my website  CLICK HERE  are the words “Faith, family and four-footed friends…a life in the country.”  This speaks to both my life, and the type of books I write: clean & wholesome, or inspirational romance that often includes mystery or suspense, set in a world of ranches, rural living or small-town life…and with animals, too.  Did I mention that though our menagerie of birds, reptiles and bunnies dissipated once our kids grew up (no more pet snakes, tarantulas or lizards in the house, thank you! J  ) we still have horses, rescue dogs, a half-dozen fluffy, friendly barn cats, and a peacock?   From my very first novel, our various creatures have found their way into print. Ssssid, our son’s corn snake, found his way into that book with the very first line:  If Claire had known about the snake, she never would have left New York.

And now, for a bit on this release…ONE MORE DANCE, which is available for pre-order at just $.99  and will be released on March 19, 2021. CLICK HERE for more information, or if you’d like to nab this book at the $.99 pre-order price!

How badly can a relationship be broken before there’s just no chance to save it?

When veterinarian Kate Mathers drives past the scene of a terrible accident and sees two ambulances race away, she whispers a prayer for those involved, not realizing that it’s her husband’s car in flames down in the ditch, and that there was a dead woman in the car with him—a complete stranger. And now Jared is in the ICU on the verge of death, and only a miracle can save him.

She’s at his bedside, trying to face Jared’s precarious situation and also deal with the fact that someone is targeting both her husband and her veterinary practice, and wondering how the most perfect, joyous marriage could have gone so wrong. Or did it?

If only they can have one more chance to talk and to forgive, and one more dance in each other’s arms…

So, what do you think—does the current flowery cover of ONE MORE DANCE catch your eye? Or should I go for a cover more specific to the novel? Say, a sweet dog with a woman, in a pretty country setting? Leave a comment, and you’ll be in a drawing for a free e-copy of SNOWBOUND WITH THE COWBOY  (or a paperback copy, if the winner lives in the USA.)

Best wishes to you all!   Roxanne Rustand

The cover really doesn’t fit the storyline. I am thinking something dream like with a couple dancing and the moon setting.
