FALLING A LITTLE BIT IN LOVE

by Alexis Morgan

I love the sense of anticipation that happens every time I pick up a new romance to read or sit down at my computer to begin a new story. Yes, part of that is knowing I’m setting off on a new adventure, but what really draws me to reading and writing romances is knowing that once again I’ll have a chance to fall a little bit in love with the hero.

Back in my early teens, I read a lot of gothics. You know, the ones where the heroes all had tragic pasts. Poor guys, so misunderstood except by the one woman who saw the last bit of good in them. From there, I moved on to reading westerns. While I liked the U.S. Marshall who could face down the outlaws all by himself, I had a special fondness for the outlaws with a heart of gold. And if the school marm was torn between the man wearing a star on his chest or the outlaw with a price on his head? Well, let’s just say it was no contest.

For a while, I read other genres—mainly thrillers and mysteries. While a lot of them had strong characters and great plots, I missed the added depth that a great love story brings with it. It wasn’t until a friend encouraged me to give romances another try that I found what I’d been missing.

Not everyone likes a tortured hero, the ones with dark secrets in their past, but they’re definitely my personal favorite. There are a few who stand out in the crowd, and their books are on my keeper shelf. They are a mixed bag of genres.

For the Linda Howard fans in the crowd, I’m talking about Grant Sullivan in Midnight Rainbow. He’s a spec ops soldier who has seen too much death and destruction. Then he meets Jane, a woman who teaches him how to laugh again.

Then there’s Zsadist in J.R. Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood series. He is the vampire who scares all the other vampires. His transformation over the course of her books is amazing.

For the historical fans in the crowd, I really love Sarah MacLean’s Rules of Scoundrels Series, but especially One Good Earl Deserves a Lover. Cross’s guilt over his past mistakes has made him a man with many secrets. It’s a real struggle for him to put guilt behind him and take a chance on happiness again.

Nalini Singh’s Psy-Changling series is a particular favorite of mine, but the one I’ve read over and over again is Caressed by Ice. Judd Lauren is a man with deadly powers that he can control only by burying his emotions behind a wall of ice.

If you like romantic suspense with a twist, try Karen Robards’ series about a psychiatrist who specializes in studying the serial killers on death row. She never expected to fall in love with Michael Garland, one of her study subjects. Did I mention he’s a ghost? The first title in the four-book series is The Last Victim.

In my new release, In Darkness Transformed (The Paladin Strike Team, Book 1), Eli Jervain learns the hard way that he’s a Paladin when his Special Forces team die in a helicopter crash. The only problem is that he didn’t stay that way. Now he has to live with the guilt of surviving when his friends didn’t and for walking away from the life he’s always known. Alone and lonely, he falls in love with a beautiful woman from another world. If he didn’t already have enough problems, he finds out that his fellow Paladins and her people have been locked in a deadly battle for as long as anyone can remember.

I’m always looking for new authors to read and new heroes to fall in love with. If you have any favorites I should know about, please share! One lucky person who leaves a comment will be chosen to receive a $10 Amazon gift card.

So excited for more Paladin books! I’m also a huge fan of Judd and I reread Caressed by Ice all the time.

One of my favorites for great characters and lots of action is Anna Hackett, especially her Hell Squad series.

    1. Thanks for the suggestion–I haven’t read anything by Anna Hackett before. I just checked and the first book in that series is free right now at least on Kindle. =o) I’ll give it a try!
