Dancing My Way Across Texas

Cyndi Headshot #4Hi All! Cynthia D’Alba here. This is my first post on the Writerspace blog so be gentle with me! If you haven’t met me, I write contemporary romance, most of it starring an honorable, adorable cowboy. I didn’t start out to write cowboys. In book one of the Texas Montgomery Mavericks series (Texas Two Step), my hero wasn’t a cowboy at all. He was (are you ready?) an Italian Prince! About fifty pages into the story, my hero ripped off his tie and said, “Look, lady. I ain’t no Italian, much less a prince. I live in Texas and I’m a cowboy.”

Okay then. Mitch Landry took shape as a Texas cowboy who really needed a second chance with his college sweetheart, Olivia Montgomery, and my series was born.

Texas Two StepAnother thing that came as a surprise is that I’m writing a series. When Texas Two Step was released in 2012, I really had no plans for a series, much less that the Texas Montgomery Mavericks series has continued to this day. Book 5, Texas Bossa Nova was released in March 2015. Texas Hustle, Book 6, comes on November 24. I am in the throes of writing Book 7, Texas Lullaby.

In the upcoming release, Texas Hustle, we get Darren Montgomery’s story. We first met Darren and his twin brother Reno in Texas Tango as cousins to the hero, Travis Montgomery. Darren is a young, handsome cowboy who is quite popular with the ladies of Whispering Springs, Texas. He enjoys the game but he has his eyes on Porchia Summers, an older woman who has issues about dating a man since in his twenties.

Here’s a little excerpt from Texas Hustle:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
TexasHustle“You are in the bachelor auction? You? Darren Montgomery? What is this world coming to when you have to sell your wares on the street?” She tsked. “D&R a little hard for money this month?”
Shaggy long dark hair brushed the color of his denim shirt. Piercing blue-eyes that could make any woman drown in them. And his voice. Oh Lord. His deep Southern drawl combined with a husky laugh made her gut tumble to her knees.
He chuckled. “What can I say? Aunt Jackie caught me in a good mood one day and I said yes. Besides, it’s for a good cause. It’s to raise money for an abused women and children’s shelter.”
“I know.” She pointed toward the large plate glass window at the front of her store. “I’ve had the flyer up for a couple of weeks.”
“You coming tonight?”
“No. Why would I?”
He indicated the brochure with his chin. “You have all the various date information. I thought maybe you were checking out the manly goods.”
She laughed again. One thing about Darren, he never failed to entertain her. If only he were her age instead of being years younger. The age thing was her problem, not his. But being thirty-two and dating a guy still in his twenties made her feel desperate and she wasn’t. Not by a long shot. And really, she was quite attracted to him, if only she could be past the four year age difference.
“Manly goods? It might be worth it if there were any manly goods to be seen.”
He leaned over to whisper in her ear. The scent of man, and sugar, and cinnamon was an aphrodisiac for her. She felt a tug in her gut just behind her navel. Her breath caught, holding all that deliciousness in.
“The date I’m offering is very special. It’s not just any girl that I’d want to take. Check it out.”
His warm breath on her neck had her knees going weak and her head wanting to turn until her lips could meet his. But in the end, she grinned and pushed him back.
“I’m sure you’ll raise a lot of money tonight. Have fun.”
