Breaking the Rules

by A.S. Fenichel

fenichel_ascensionI blame Jane Austen for making the early 1800s so romantic to me. I love the period. I love the rules and I hate the rules. No touching or even being alone together. I love this because when they finally do touch, even if it’s incidental, it’s earth-shattering. Then there is the stunning contrast between what is within a man’s rights and what a woman might attain. It is staggering, maddening and intriguing.

So why demons, you might ask. It’s not so much the demons as the hunters. I recently received a review for ASCENSION and not a favorable one. It was from someone very unhappy about what I did. She hated that I would break or even bend the rules of a Regency romance. “…I expect a few rules. One of which is that sex happens after a marriage and no fiancee would even think of making love with her intended.”

Frankly, I love to break a few rules now and then. Don’t you? I even love that the rules are there for me to break. I would also guess that the people of the Regency era were not perfect and indiscretions happened more often than Jane Austen led us to believe.

Those terrible demons led me to the demon hunters, which led me to a reason for those oh-so-stringent rules to be broken. Mind you I break them with reason and I think I break them well. I’ll let you be the judge of that. 😉

In ASCENSION I will introduce you to a Company of Demon Hunters who live just outside of the view of society. Because the characters straddle the line between the social order and the knowledge that demons may kill them at any moment, they might feel free to bend a few of those well-loved rules.

Remember, I love those rules too. I’ve read thousands of historical novels. I’ve read Pride and Prejudice four or five times and seen all the movies and TV versions. I’m a fan of etiquette and glove wearing. But I’m also a fan of A$$ kicking heroines like Belinda, who can stand up for themselves and heroes who evolve beyond what they have been raised to believe. Evolution is painful and poor Gabriel has suffered and will suffer, but you are going to fall in love just the same.

What rules would you break to get what you REALLY want?
