Being Real in an Imaginary World

by Danica Winters

Let’s get real. We are kindred spirits. Anyone who spends as much time as we do, well, we have to have a ton in common. We want men (on and off the pages of our books) who are just as imperfect as we are. We want heroes who make us think, and who resonate within us. We want stories that keep us all night reading. And I think, and this may be pushing our commonalities, is that we want connection (in our own introverted way). It was this connection with great stories, great characters, and this drive for community that drove us all to become readers.

You may say, but you are an authorYou are totally different than I am. You are so creative… But here is the deal, we aren’t different. Yes, I choose to sit in my chair and make up stories for hours every single day, but really… don’t we all imagine? Don’t we all dream of things that we want, that we need, look for answers for the things we are dealing with? I just put my thoughts on the page.

And I think it is this similarity, this daydreaming and creating imaginary worlds, that makes my stories what many critics and reviewers have called “…raw” and “…authentic.” To me, there are no greater compliments. What I want, not only from the stories I write but also in the books that I read, are stories that are real. That being said, being a romance fan, I want and need a happy or a happy-for-now ending.

I don’t mean that the story needs to be completely wrapped up with a nice little bow and everything is completed and discovered at the end of one book, but I need the hero and heroines to be devoted and promised to one another. Oh, and I want a strong end to whatever mystery is thrown my way.

In my newest Christmas Mystery Series, I admit that I decided to play with this idea—of not answering every single question at the end of the book. I wanted to create a series that was more like life, sometimes we are left with questions…with answers which will only come with the passage of time. For example, in MS. CALCULATION (Book One of Four) the mystery is solved, but more arise because of the things Wyatt and Gwen discover.

MS. CALCULATION just hit store shelves on 9/1/17, but I’m already getting tons of positive feedback about MS. CALCULATION and I couldn’t be happier and I’m humbled by my readers’ praises; because, just like you, I want to have a great story. I want to have my friends read books that make them happy and keep them turning the page long through the night.

More, I want a book that connects us. And, I’m not going to mask this in the slightest, my books are from my soul. If you have met me or not, you will see my quirks, my sense of humor, my darkness, my light, my family, my friends, and even my secrets poured out onto the pages of all of my books. It is deeply uncomfortable, but at the same time so rewarding because I can help others escape. I can help create a safe place for those in need, and I can give those who are sad a chance to laugh. Verging on the cusp of becoming a golden retriever, I want to be friends with my readers. I want us to share our lives (and I won’t pass up a great photobooth)!

It is my goal that we can do just that. If you need to lose yourself for a while, or take a step back from your life, or just get a break, I hope you can find the escape you need in the reality of our imaginary world—a world where a happy ending is a must!
