Adapt, overcome, and never give up…

I began writing 12 years ago when a friend asked me to edit a book she’d been working on. In my attempt to help my friend, I learned two very important things about myself: a.) I have absolutely no editorial skill. And b.) I love to tell stories. That’s how I discovered my love for writing, and it’s been a rollercoaster ride of highs and lows ever since.

The first book I wrote in 2007 was a paranormal romance titled Until Darkness Comes. It was picked up by a small publishing company and evolved into a 4-book series.

I loved the paranormal world and begin writing another series with the hope to sign with a literary agent and sell the story to a mass market publisher. Though Bonded in Exile was submitted to several agencies, the common response I received was, “Love the book but paranormal isn’t selling.”

That’s when I realized I had to start writing not just for myself, but for the market. I decided to jump genres in 2012 and entered the contemporary world. The transition wasn’t easy. A + B now had to = C. Writing within the confines of realism was a new and challenging task for me. How could I make real life interesting enough that people would want to read it?

Win by Submission was the first of the many contemporary titles I’ve written. I look back now and think if I wouldn’t have been willing to adapt and overcome, my writing career would have ended before it ever began. My advice to all struggling authors is to write for your readers. Tell the stories they want to read. One of the best places to do this is in category romance.

I’m thrilled and grateful to be here today celebrating my latest release The Nanny Rules!

Tropes come and go, but there are a few favorites that are timeless. Who doesn’t love a hot and steamy forbidden romance? In one way or another, aren’t we all guilty of wanting what we can’t have? This makes our characters relatable, and real, and readers desperately hungry to turn the next page. Romance feeds our soul, and the forbidden sparks that secret desire inside of us to be just a little bit naughty.

I was super excited when my agent contacted me with an opportunity to write a book for the Brazen line. I gravitate toward the forbidden romance trope and have wanted to tell a nanny/daddy story for a while now, so this was a great time to tell Brody and Amelia’s story.

I hope that sharing a little bit about my writing journey has encouraged other authors who might not have had the easiest road to success.

Don’t touch the nanny. It’s one rule I’m most certainly going to break.

Since becoming a single father, I have two things that keep me sane—my daughter Lily and playing football for the NFL. But when my meddling sister hires a nanny without my knowledge, I’m not thrilled to come home and find the woman has taken over my house. Our instant attraction is one more complication I don’t need in my life.

But my daughter loves Amelia, and I will do anything for that tiny munchkin. Even if it means walking around with blue balls most of the time. Why does the nanny have to be so sweet—and drop dead gorgeous? She’s driving me crazy. Never in my life have I wanted a woman more.

I just need to make it through this season. I can do that. Hands free, of course. But then here’s that moment, and I know she’s thinking what I’m thinking and, well, yeah. Screw the rules…

The Vestal Virgins

On my recent trip to Rome to finish researching St. Cecilia’s life for my historical fiction novel, Virgin Martyr, I spent some time at the Temple of Vesta and the home of the ancient Roman Vestal Virgins. One of my purposes in writing this book was to investigate how attitudes about women’s sexuality and social… Read More
