The idea for the adventures of Celestina came to me while I was reading about the real life wife of Sultan Suleiman, who had been his slave in the harem, but who ended up capturing the heart of a Sultan and becoming his wife. Roxelana is still revered in modern day Turkey, as she was a great force for good, with a particular interest in the education and emancipation of women.
It is believed that Roxelana was kidnapped – possibly even by Suleiman on a raiding party – in what is now Poland, but though these facts are fascinating, it was the excitement of discovering what awaited a young slave girl behind the palace walls, that fascinated me.
So… my Celestina is not Roxelana, but an imaginary figure, a foundling from the convent, who is spotted by spies from the harem who think our heroine a likely candidate for the Sultan’s interest, but first Celestina must be prepared and trained…
