The Romantic Chase - Sandy Blair
While reading a contemporary suspense recently in which the hero and heroine were immediately attracted to each other and making love by the end of the first chapter, I couldn’t help but think, “But where’s the romance in that?”
Color me silly but I want the hero to have to chase the heroine to ground, or see the heroine long for a man she can’t/or shouldn’t have for whatever reason and then watch as they struggle and find their way to a happily-ever-after ending.
I want to be there when heroines and heroes come to the realization that their lives will be poorer should they give in to their fears--or external forces--and give up the chase, allow this love to slip through their fingers.
Perhaps this is why a “chase” is at the heart of my stories no matter their length.
In my upcoming novella MacDuff’s Secret, MacDuff is immediately attracted to Sarah and vise-versa, but with each having private agendas, neither understands or trusts the other. It’s the struggle--the development of mutual respect that boosts the physical attraction, which grows into love--that makes the difficult decisions I put before them feel all the harder and thus makes their happily-ever-ending all the sweeter.
Am I being greedy wanting a compelling plot and the romantic chase? What are you hoping to find/experience when you open a Romance?
I’ll be giving away an autographed copy of A Highlander For Christmas to someone who comments.

I dont think you are being greedy at all. I think that a romance is more meaningful if it takes time to get there. Its just like in everyday life, nothing is worth having if you dont have to work for it!!
I agree that I like if there is a chase of some sort; both of them having to give of themselves and getting something in return, but not love right off the bat. They need to work at it.
Hi Alicia,
Thanks for dropping by, and I'm happy to learn there are others who feel as I do...that love takes time.
Hi Robin,
Yes! Both having to give something of themselves in order to get their heart's desire.
I hope you all get to experience the thrill.
Hi Sandy. I love the chase too. It makes the story so much better when the couple has to work for their HEA.
I love a story with a good chase, something to keep you hooked and wanting to know what it going to happen next.
Hi Crystal and Rebekah,
So nice of you both to stop by. Thank you.
One of my all time favorite historical authors is Julie Garwood. She'll make you laugh, cry, and all while crafting a delightful chase that will keep you turning pages well into the night.
Have any of you read her work? If not, I highly recommend The Prize.
I have to agree with you. I love a good chase between the hero and heroine. I have read a few books where the h/h had sex in the first few chapters, and I was very disappointed.
Sandy, I love Julie Garwood's historicals, especially her medievals! They are favorite rereads of mine.
Hi Sandy!
I want a good, strong plot. I want their to be an interesting chase both ways, almost like a tug-of-war. I like secrets; strange and different. I want to be drawn in to where I can't put the book down. Thanks for being here today.
Hi Cheryl,
Good to hear hear from another JG fan. (Her books are marvelous!)
Another of my favorite historical authors is NY Times bestseller Lorraine Heath. She writes Victorian set tales that aren't as load with humor as JG's are but the plots and characterizations draw you in on the first page and hold you captive to the bitter end, at which point I usually find myself thinking, "Aww, I'm not ready for this to end."
Another such author is Kathleen Givens. Has anyone here read the "Kilgannon" or its follow-up "The Rose of Kilgannon?" Phenomenal reads if you're into Highland tales!
I love all your books you have writen so far. But if I had to chose a book you have writen it would be birdie and Augus . my fave of all time. I pray that you write faster or I read slower LOl.. I so believe with a good book you are never alone,
god bless you
Joy
Love your books. the only problem I know of you write to slow.LOL Or i read to fast. But you are one in a million that I can read your books and feel like I am really there with the hero and the lady.
But my fav book if I had to choose is still Birdie and Augus.
Lady Graeye,
So good to hear from you. I agree a compelling plot and secrets make for exciting reads. They're why I enjoy Sherrilyn Kenyon's books so much. I rarely know what's she's got in store for me.
And let's face it, there's nothing worse than slogging through redundant dialog and introspection.
Hi Joy,
Aw, thanks. Birdie is one of my all-time favorite heroines, as well. (I laughed and cried my entire way through "A Rogue In A Kilt.")
And I promise to write faster.
I agree with everyone that love takes time or it isnt worth it.
