I Will Get them Back

by Rebecca Zanetti

Marked1First, a big thank you to Writerspace for having me over today to celebrate the release of MARKED, and happy holidays, everyone!  I don’t know about you, but my family has quite a few traditions in place for this time of year.  Big Tone and I have been married for quite a while, and we have the routine down pat.

On Christmas Eve, (tonight, actually) we head to my parents’ house for dinner and presents with my two sisters and their families.  This year my mom said she’s combining the grown up table and the kids table into one, so I’m quite curious how she’ll do this.

Anyway, we’ll get into the wine, and at some point, somebody will bring up Christmas from two years ago.  Before we eat, we always do a white elephant gift for just fun, where you can steal twice if you want it.  Often there are candy machines or just goofy stuff.  Two years ago, there were scratch lottery tickets.  Guess who ended up winning them?

Yep, me.

So I scratched them and started to get excited.  $10,000 came up.  Whoo hoo!  Then it came up again.  My heart started thrumming, and not just because of the money.  I’d actually ‘stolen’ the tickets from my brother-in-law, Travis, and it might be worth ten grand!  Well…the third $10,000 came up, and I lost it.

Yeah, I got pretty excited.  I may have jumped over the coffee table in a rather excited state.

Guess what?

It was a fake.  Those jackasses had put a fake winning one in the lot.  And I fell for it.  Sigh.

They still laugh about how excited I was.  (If you have siblings, you get this).  Thank goodness, and I truly mean this from the bottom of my heart, thank goodness nobody was filming it.

So, in the spirit of Christmas, let me tell you.  I don’t know when, and I don’t know how, but my memory is long, and I will get them back.

Has your family ever played a joke on you that just won’t go away?

Thanks again to Writerspace for having me over to play today.  Everyone have a very Happy New Year!
