What are Your Guilty Pleasures?

by Amy Jarecki

Who doesn’t have a few guilty pleasures? That said, I always ask myself, hey, if it’s pleasurable, then why feel bad about it? Then I remember how my mother filled my head with “must nots” and piled on the guilt—sometimes for really silly stuff. And then I thought…guilty pleasures have to be the most tempting. This also reminded me of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s wife, Zelda and how she always stretched the boundaries of acceptable (though I doubt she felt an iota of guilt *grins*).

So, here are some of mine:

NUMBER 5:

Chocolate. When asked this question I’m pretty sure everyone says chocolate, but I’m talking top shelf here. I’m talking Godiva, melt-in-your-mouth and float to heaven chocolate. Having a bad day? Go someplace quiet. Take a square of Cadbury Milk Chocolate and place it on your tongue. Close your eyes and picture an excluded beach where all you can hear is the surf as it slowly rolls onto the shore. You’re warm and relaxed and the chocolate is taking you to heaven as it slowly melts away the tension of the day.

NUMBER 4:

Whisky. Single Malt. Straight. To be sipped and enjoyed in front of a fire…or by the pool…or in bed…or wherever you might be right now. *grins again*

NUMBER THREE:

Driving fast down a country road. Of course I only ever do this when there’s no chance of hurting anyone, but I love taking out my turbo-charged VW bug and testing its limits. Driving fast with my hair on fire! What car do you love?

NUMBER TWO: *ahem*

Who doesn’t enjoy getting naked with their significant other in the middle of the day…when they should be working!

NUMBER ONE:

Running away! When things are really bogged down, the best thing to do is hop in the car and take off for a thrill-seeking weekend! Parasail the Grand Canyon. Kayak the rapids. Hike the Olympic rainforest. Take a 3-day cruise to Mexico. Just. Do. It!

Whatever your pleasure, don’t feel guilty about it, revel in it and enjoy life!

One place I often run away to is Scotland where I get my inspiration to write Scottish historical romance. The Highland Commander released on June 27th and is available in mass market paperback as well as e-book.

Amy Jarecki

Amy embarked on her writing journey shortly after she completed an MBA with Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland. Her first manuscripts were suspense novels and were never published. She calls them baptism by fire---lessons in learning to write fiction. These lessons, combined with several writing conferences and classes, led her to write her first published book, Boy Man Chief, which won the League of Utah Writers award for Best Manuscript, and the Spark Book Award. A lot has happened since, with some of the highlights being Rise of a Legend winning the national RONE award for Best Time Travel; hitting the Amazon Top 100 Bestseller list; and a host of other accolades. Amy enjoys the freedom of authorship and the opportunity to work creatively every day. She has lived in Australia, Bermuda and has spent extensive time in Scotland. Whenever possible, she visits the places she writes about to add vibrant realism to her stories. She loves writing Scottish historical romance, and now she's adding romantic suspense to the mix. Come along for the ride!
