Veronica Forand’s Favorite Flying Tips

I love to travel. I’ve been to five continents, many islands, experienced many interesting cultures, and tasted different foods. Over the years, mistakes and problems have led to some insight on things that make flying easier. Here’s a few:

FLYING

When flying on a plane for more than two hours, I always bring food.

I never leave my meals to chance. Even when a meal is offered on a flight, there are times when the dish isn’t so appetizing or healthy. Too often to quantify, a flight crew would run out of the pasta dish by the time they reach my seat, and I’d end up with some unidentified fish dish. If it’s not appetizing, I won’t eat it. I pack enough food to provide something decent and healthy to eat even in the middle of the night, when the only options are often pretzels and peanuts. Some of my favorite things to bring are whole apples and bananas, grapes, carrots and cucumbers, nut butters, and cream cheese packets. A simple bagel satisfies when there’s nothing better to eat.

I always fly with my own bottle of water.

I tend to get headaches when I’m not hydrated, so I always bring a large bottle of water and drink liberally. It’s also great for your skin. You can buy it after you go through security, or bring a bottle and fill it up before boarding.

I stay charged.

My phone is always 100% charged when I board a flight. If there’s no way to charge it on the plane, I can charge it from my computer’s battery if it gets too low. No matter what, I never allow my phone to drain below twenty percent during the flight so I have the ability to hire an Uber/Lyft, contact my hotel, or contact people on the ground without rushing around the terminal looking for an outlet.

I sleep.

If I’m going overseas for just a short amount of time, I make sure I sleep on the overnight flight. I skip the meal and try to rest immediately to grab at least four or five hours of rest. I tend to wake up a bit before everybody else to avoid the bathroom lines and the struggle to get around the food carts serving breakfast. Then I hit the ground running without hitting a wall of exhaustion too early in the day.

When I head home.

When I have an early morning flight home, I often find an airport hotel for my last night. It reduces stress and allows me to enjoy a breakfast before walking or taking an easy shuttle to the terminal without stressing about traffic, or worrying about finding transportation.

Relax

Where ever you’re headed, try to relax when things are delayed. My motto is that it’s better to find the problem with the plane while at the terminal than 10,000 feet in the air.

Have a great flight!
