Travel, Writing and Travel in Writing

by A. S. Fenichel

training-rain-finalThose of you who follow my blog know that I love to travel. I’ve been all over the country, though there’s still much more to see. I’ve also been to South America, Mexico, Canada and all over Europe. I enjoy meeting new people and checking out cultural similarities and differences. I’m a student of human nature. I think a writer needs to know why people do things that many of us think are crazy or why someone lives their entire life without taking a chance. Why does a man lie about how he sustained an injury? What makes a woman run into traffic to save a stranger from the car about to crush him? Why does a girl with a nice, simple life say yes to the offer to join a group of psychic spies?

Good questions!

I’m not saying travel is the only way to get the answers. You can go to the local coffee shop and eavesdrop on the patrons or join the conversation and learn many of the same things. I just love to see places near and far and dip into the unique cultures. New Orleans has a sultry quality and the people a zest for life. Mexico is filled with romance and warm, friendly people. England bleeds history from every street and building. The people take a little while to warm up, but once they do, you’ll find lifelong friends. The world is magic and I want to be a part of it. More, I want to bring that magic through in my stories.

As in my life, travel is a big part of my books. The characters in the Psychic Mates series are constantly on the run to places I’ve been. Whether it’s Mexico, Savannah, or New Orleans, I love to bring them to new locations and immerse them in the life of that place. The experiences of Rain and Reece in Training Rain are theirs not mine. I’ve been to many of the places they find themselves, but I let them discover new things and I’m not psychic so my knowledge is limited in comparison. They do discover a lot about New Orleans I never did, including some interesting effects of a certain Gentlemen’s Club. From the mountains of Yellowstone to the Nevada desert, these two are constantly under fire.

Training Rain
Psychic Mates, Book Three
A.S. Fenichel

Having spent most of her life avoiding people and hiding her psychic gifts, Rain was shocked when the new Psi Alliance asked her to join. She didn’t count on the rigorous training or needing all of her Native American knowledge to complete the course. And if only she could ignore her attraction to her devilishly handsome instructor.

Jess shows up to train a new psychic recruit and the crazy woman shoots him in the doorway. His new student is the raven-haired beauty who’d once saved his life. Trying to keep his focus on survival training is hard enough without the added stress of a rogue government agency trying to kill them.

Escaping danger leads them directly into each other’s arms. The only question is—can they survive long enough to find comfort there?
