To Bite or Not to Bite…

SexAndTheSingleVampHighResWith my latest release, SEX & THE SINGLE VAMP, I ventured into the paranormal romance for the first time.  I usually write contemporary adult romance but this opportunity was too good to pass up. First, it would give me the chance to stretch myself professionally and to use aspects of my craft in new ways. Second, I had the chance to build an entirely new world, to create creatures that never existed or to put my own twist on the old standards. Once I decided that my hero and heroine were vampires, I chatted up author friends and readers, anxious to hear what they loved and didn’t love about vamp paranormal romance.

I’m not sure what I was expecting but the biggest question/comment I received was, “Will you have them bite each other in the book?”

I was really surprised by that question as I had presumed most of the interest would be in the world-building aspects of the story, the settings, and the special abilities of the characters. Nope-they wanted an answer to the biting question and many of them had very firm opinions about whether they liked it or not. There are definite “bite” and “no bite” camps on this issue – who knew? I didn’t.

So, armed with this information, I examined my own ideas about the book and realized that I had no idea.  But I knew I had to figure it out.

Thinking about my paranormal reading experience, I could clearly put books into “bite” and “no bite” categories and then I could break it down even further into strata of “bite for pleasure” and “bite for sustenance” and “bite for protection” and “bite for life”.  The bites in romance novels have given sexual pleasure, joined the subconscious minds of the participants, provided a “blood connection” that fed the plot, while some have been used to kill or to give immortality to someone.

Whew. That’s a whole lot of biting to think about.

In my book, the hero and heroine have known each other for 240 years. Their past, present and futures are tangled up together and complicated by unrequited passion that they’ve avoided addressing for two centuries. When they began to come together on the page, I saw a definite pattern to their character and relationship growth and it pointed to an obvious answer to the biting question that fit the story very well.

So – do you like to see the biting on the page or not?

  1. Hi Robin,
I have just recently become a lover of the paranormal. Before it was just historical romance, and do not care for contemporary at all! So this is fun finding a new author to love. It makes no difference whether there is biting or not to me. Especially with the way you have of fleshing out the reason for it. I do look for really wonderful love making which is the reason I read the book, for the happily ever afters~! I absolutely adore a book an author has given their very soul to. Example, Kathleen Woodiwiss “Shanna”. And page after page after page is devoted to the physical, romantic, loving itself~! But no one seems to know how to write like that anymore. So, I look for whatever I can find close to it.
Good to get to know you, Connie

    1. Connie – thanks so much for leaving a comment! I do love a great sex scene and i am embarrassed to say that I’ve never read Shanna . . . on my TBR pile!
