Procrastination, Thy Name is Jaycie

procrastinationI’m in no rush to write this blog: it’s just 10:30 the night before it’s due. And here I’ve already begun to think about my topic for discussion.

Am I good or what?

As sad as it is to admit, I am actually far better at taking care of business in a timely manner today than once was the case.

You see, procrastination is more than a mind-set for me; it’s a way of life. Once upon a time I considered it my own personal art form.

Looking back, I’m pretty sure I was at least a bit addicted to the adrenaline that results from racing against a looming deadline. Plus, it was a way for me to prove myself more than capable, since it gave me the chance to accomplish difficult tasks despite self-imposed time constraints and roadblocks.

And, in those cases where I wasn’t able to finish on schedule . . . or ended up doing a less than stellar job as a result of rushing through the process, I had a built-in excuse: I simply hadn’t had enough time to do well.

It couldn’t possibly have been due to a lack of talent, intelligence or skill on my part . . . or could it?

Clearly, a part of me always thought that it could. And that thought kept me running on a treadmill, once I actually jumped on it at the last possible moment.

procrastinateOver time I’ve learned to recognize my tendency for putting things off as the negative and self-destructive habit that it is. This has freed me from much of the daily drama in my life, or at least it has helped me to keep that drama where it belongs: on the pages of the books I read and the television and movie screens I so love to watch.

Of course—as my timeframe for writing this particular blog shows—I’m not yet fully cured of my tendency to put things off, but I am far better than once was the case.  At least I didn’t have to set my alarm to go off an hour earlier tomorrow morning so I’d have time to write it then.

HOW ABOUT YOU, DO YOU TEND TO PROCRASTINATE? IF SO, DON’T PUT OFF TELLING ME ALL ABOUT IT, I’D LOVE TO READ EXAMPLES OF HOW YOU OR OTHERS YOU KNOW HAVE MADE DELAY A WAY OF LIFE.  A FREE COPY OF MY DEBUT NOVEL, MRS. GOODFELLER WILL BE RANDOMLY AWARDED TO ONE PERSON WHO LEAVES A COMMENT BELOW BEFORE THE NEXT WRITERSPACE BLOG IS POSTED.

I am the worst at procrastinating! I just have to plan ahead for things that I know I won’t want to do. Writing is the worst.
