Meeting Myself Coming and Going

mirror-on-faceI’ve been learning a lot about myself over the last few days.

A lifelong friend—let’s call her Judy—has traveled around 1,500 miles to return here, to her home town, to attend her high school reunion (no way I’m saying which one, but the number almost rhymes with “LORDY,” which is just one of the words I spewed when it dawned on me I’ve been out of high school that long as well).

She’s been staying with me. And, as a student of human nature, I’ve been fascinated with the mirror this has held up to my psyche. Totally unbeknownst to myself (until now) I’m pretty freaking weird!

Oh, Judy hasn’t indicated in any way, shape or form that she finds me odd, although no jury of her peers would sentence her to any real punishment if she were to ever accuse me of same. It’s simply a realization I’ve reached on my own.

It appears that all those years of living alone may have left me just the teensiest bit set in my ways.

Since she’s going to stay in my home while I’m out of town on business in a few days, I’ve been showing Judy how to do and operate things around the house. Who knew that I’d consider the order in which she watered my flowers important? Or that I’d think I needed to tell her how to load the dishwasher?

When she’s driving her rental car, why on earth have I found it necessary to advise her as to when the streets are clear enough for her to make a turn? And what earthly reason could I have to suggest when and how it would be best for her to use paper towels versus a sponge?

Somehow, in some horrifying, inexplicable way, being single and childless has left me a patchworked-Frankenstein, stitched together from a mish-mash of cranky mother-in-law, annoying employer and bossy, eccentric neighbor lady.

Don’t you wish you were visiting me too?!?

Yet, all these embarrassing quirks aside, I’m still lucky . . . no, make that BLESSED enough to have a sweet lifelong friend like Judy in my life who, throughout her visit, has given me a hug and “love ya” before toddling off to my guest room each and every night.

Proof positive that the old saying “It’s better to be lucky than good” is God’s own truth!

HOW ABOUT YOU, HAVE YOU EVER COME FACE-TO-FACE WITH SOME PERSONALITY TRAITS IN YOURSELF THAT YOU MIGHT FIND LESS THAN COMMENDABLE? HAS HAVING COMPANY VISIT YOU OVER A FEW DAYS BROUGHT OUT THE BEST OR LESS FROM YOU IN THE PAST? A FREE COPY OF MY DEBUT NOVEL, MRS. You sound like my sister! When I visited her, she gave me explicit instructions on how to do laundry. Since I am 13 years older than her, I listened carefully and then did the wash as I wanted to do it. I figured she would never know the difference. By the way, I should mention she is also single and very set in her ways. Guess I was showing my pigheadedness (probably not a word).
