Let’s Give Them Something to Talk About

By Candace Havens

Branded FinalHave you ever picked up a book in a genre that you don’t normally read and have fallen in love? Maybe you read paranormals but just happened upon a historical and now that’s all you want to read? Maybe it’s a hero-type you found by accident? I can’t tell you how many times that’s happened to me. I’ll be honest, when the idea for Branded came about, my first thought was, “Why am I writing a cowboy book?” The answer ended up being because I’d just wrote a cowboy book for people who don’t read cowboy books, and hopefully, for those who do. (Smile)

It isn’t the first time I’ve done this. I wrote a witch book 100 years ago (not really, but it feels like it), Charmed & Dangerous, which happened to be my first book. I couldn’t find a witch book that I liked at the time, so I just wrote my own. First thing people said, “I don’t normally read this sort of thing…but I like this.” Those comments made my day. I did with my marines for Harlequin and now with my super sexy cowboy Cole.

Yes, he’s the ranch manager, but he’s so much more. And you find that out as you go along. One of the early reviews for Branded made the comment, “I don’t normally read cowboy books…” And that’s when I’d realized I’d done it again. But, I honestly didn’t know it until I read that review. He was just this guy rolling around in my head who would protect his family no matter what – but then there was this girl. And being with her meant destroying everything he held dear, but he couldn’t stay away. And that’s how I started writing a cowboy book, without really meaning to.

But I’m curious about you. Have you ever tried a new type of book and been pleasantly surprised? Years ago, I happened to pick up a romance by Jodi Thomas, and she ended up being my gateway drug into historicals. The Harry Potter books were my gateway back into children’s literature and later into young adult books.

So tell me about your experiences with trying something new. I really want to know.

I have my hands full taking care of my little sister and covering for my uncle as ranch foreman. The last thing I need is a Texas princess like Callie Llewellyn getting up in my business and messing with my head.

All I can think of is getting up close and personal with those curves of hers. And being on the edge of discovery makes our quick-and-dirty encounters twice as hot. And that’s all they are—quick and dirty—there’s nothing deeper going on here.

There’s only one rule to keeping my job and a roof over my sister’s head: stay away from the boss’s granddaughter. But I’m not always great at following the rules.
