Keeping All The Balls in The Air

TheTemporaryWifeMy debut novel, The Temporary Wife, is really a dream come true for me.  I’ve been writing for twelve years and have had so many “almost sold” close calls it was getting to be a cruel tease.  But it finally happened and when it did, boy, was that a roller coaster.

I’m not going to recap my “call” story, but I’m going to tell you what happened after the call because I think it really reflects what so many writers experience when they first get a contract.  Plain and simple, it’s exhaustion.  I had to write a book in seven weeks.  I am not kidding about that, either.

It’s becoming more common for authors to be faced with wicked deadlines, but I never considered saying no.  An editor from a Big 6 house wanted me to write for them.  I said yes.  I didn’t think of the toll it would take on me.  I was going to be published.  I was going to do this.

Now, I’ve been a school librarian for 17 years.  I love my work and my school, but this writing thing was a special dream.  The thought that people would be reading my stories was beyond exciting.  But, when I signed my contract, the questions, and the idea that I was going to start living the glamorous life of a romance author was all my co-workers could think about.  I would travel to book signings and go to movie premiers.  You see, my friends at work thought I was destined for great riches. (It’s a lovely thought, mind you, but it’s not imminent.)  “When are you quitting,” people would ask every day.  My response was always the same…”When I can afford it.”  Quitting wasn’t an option then, and it isn’t now.  Chances are it won’t be for a long while.

I’m like a lot of authors who juggle full time work with a writing career and it’s not easy. But we do it because we love it.  If we didn’t there would be no way to sustain the pace.  It’s not just work, it’s not just writing.  It’s everything else.  Which is why I entitled this piece, “Keeping the Balls in the Air.”  That’s what we are all doing when we write…we juggle.

We juggle jobs and families and writing and professional learning and promotion and laundry and cooking and shopping and cleaning…

It’s endless.  But we do it all because we love it.  We keep the balls in the air, and even if we drop one once in a while, we keep going because we can’t silence the stories in our head.  Our normal lives trot alongside of us as we make peace with our roller coaster and learn to enjoy the ride.

The Temporary Wife

It was an offer she couldn’t refuse…from a man she couldn’t resist.

Kindergarten teacher Megan Rossi is devoted to being a mother to her best friend’s five-year-old daughter, Molly. When the child was orphaned, Meg became the little girl’s legally named guardian—over the objections of Molly’s wealthy grandparents, the Campbells. Now the Campbells are petitioning for custody, and Meg is faced with a long and expensive legal battle. The last thing she expects is for her former high school boyfriend—and the Campbells’ estranged son—to offer a solution: marriage.

Billionaire software developer Jason Campbell knows his parents don’t have Molly’s best interests at heart—it’s all about control for them. There is one way he can ensure that his sister’s last wishes are honored. He will offer Meg the protection of his name and lawyers until the custody arrangement has been finalized , then he’ll secure his niece’s future with a very generous divorce settlement. Jason’s considered all the scenarios, except one—that the sparks that once flew between he and Meg might reignite a burning passion. And that his confirmed bachelor heart might just melt away from the heat…
