Writerspace: Could you please tell readers a little bit about your current release, LIGHT IN SHADOW? Jayne Ann Krentz: LIGHT IN SHADOW is romantic-suspense with a psychic twist. I guess you could say that it is just another fairy tale romance: She's an escapee from a mental institution and he's a down-and-out private investigator with three ex-wives. Writerspace: LIGHT IN SHADOW is the first book in your new Whispering Springs series. What is that series about, and how do you plan to develop it? Will we see the same set of characters in successive books, or do you plan to have a new couple be the focus of each book? Jayne Ann Krentz: There will be a sequel to LIGHT IN SHADOW but each book stands alone. The story is about a woman who was committed to a psychiatric hospital against her will. She escaped, together with a mysterious friend, and the two are now living under false identities in Whispering Springs, Arizona. Over the course of the two books their secret pasts catch up with them. Writerspace: Why did you decide to start the Whispering Springs series? How is writing a series different from writing individual books? Which is more rewarding for you as a writer? Jayne Ann Krentz: It is fun to go back into a world where you know the characters. I'm not sure the Whispering Springs books qualify as a series, however, because there are only two books! Writerspace: What inspired Zoe’s ability to ‘read’ a room and the events that had taken place there? Jayne Ann Krentz: I think a lot of people have had the experience of walking into a strange house or room and getting a weird sensation, an awareness of the atmosphere of the place, that isn't easy to explain. I took that concept and ran with it. Zoe is an interior designer. One day she walks into a client's bedroom where she is almost certain a murder has been committed sometime in the recent past. The walls are screaming. She needs a PI, a cheap one, of course, because she can't afford a top-of-the-line model. Ethan Truax is a struggling PI who badly needs a client. Naturally, they have some problems. She's psychic and he thinks all psychics are frauds. And there's another issue. Ethan once had a very bad experience with a decorator. For her part, Zoe has a lot of qualms about getting involved with a guy who has been married and divorced three times and just barely survived bankruptcy. It's a match made in Arizona. Writerspace: You have written quite a bit concerning the paranormal, from your futuristic books written as Jayne Castle, to contemporary books like LIGHT IN SHADOW, which features a protagonist with a paranormal power. What draws you to the paranormal and inspires you to continue writing about it from different angles? Jayne Ann Krentz: I love writing stories that have a psychic twist. Most people have had some experience at some point in their lives that they believe was an episode of psychic awareness: That little jolt of warning that made you run outside to find little Johnny just in time to keep him from dashing out into the street or that creepy feeling that made you take another route home that night. It is probably just intuition at work but the sensation is one that a lot of readers can identify with and understand. I think the psychic thing adds another dimension to my plots without taking them beyond the bounds of probability Writerspace:What can readers expect to see next from Jayne Ann Krentz? Jayne Ann Krentz:I'm happy to say that there will be a new Jayne Castle futuristic. The title is WHISPERS AFTER DARK and it is dedicated to Fuzz lovers everywhere. Rest assured the dynamic dust-bunny gets a starring role in this one! |
