Hard Times in Techno World

By Jaycie Cash

Network brainFeel free to correct me, but aren’t modern conveniences supposed to make life easier?

If that’s truly the intent of most changes, inventions or updates, why is everything so much more complex today than it was say just 15 or 20 years ago?

Those of you who are younger than 35 might find it difficult to relate to this blog. But if, like me, you’re the proud possessor of some maturity, I’ll bet you get where I’m coming from.

Essentially, I seem to spend most of my time these days confused about the technology that surrounds me. Sure, I can use my cell phone as, well, a phone. I can even take photos with it, but most other applications elude both my proficiency and interest.

There may be an app for pretty much any need or interest I might have, but please don’t foist it on me.

I absolutely abhor both the time it takes me to grasp how to work any new technological wonder, and the speed with which I’ll forget that I even have it; much less how to use it.

And don’t even get me started on keeping up with my passwords for my various online accounts. But if I don’t, evidently the Russian mob, or someone else who wants to drain my bank account, will. Gone are the days when someone would either have to mug me or break into my house or bank to rip me off.

Now they can do it from the comfort of their own home. No matter how far away that home happens to be from my own.

Heck, I find myself hesitating to even consider buying new items like televisions or a stove any more, mainly because they’re so freaking complex to use. I could starve to death in the time it takes me to figure out how to turn on the stove burners.

A friend and I were talking recently about how difficult it is to even apply for a job these days. Time was when you’d just open the “Classified” section of the newspaper and mail in your resume if you found something that interested you.

Now you pretty much need to check out a variety of websites to get a complete idea of all the jobs that are available. If/when you find something that looks like a fit for your experience and skills you email your application and/or resume, all of which better include the key words used in the job posting. Because if those key words aren’t included, the equipment that processes the electronically submitted applications and resumes will pass over your material. Why? Because it won’t match the algorithms they’ve established for that job. So no matter how qualified for the position, you won’t even be considered.

Maybe it’s just as well I’m holding off on buying a new techno stove. After all, I’m not sure if I’ve got the rhythm needed to obtain a job that will help me pay for it!

HOW ABOUT YOU, DO YOU THINK ALL THE NEW TECHNOLOGY IN TODAY’S WORLD HAS MADE LIFE EASIER OR MORE COMPLEX? WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE TECHNOLOGICAL MARVEL THAT YOU USE? WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER THE BIGGEST PAIN? A FREE COPY OF MY DEBUT NOVEL, MRS. GOODFELLER WILL BE RANDOMLY AWARDED TO ONE PERSON WHO LEAVES A COMMENT BELOW BEFORE THE NEXT WRITERSPACE BLOG IS POSTED.
