Girlfriend Time

Great Escape SummerI’m headed out this afternoon for time with my girlfriends and I can’t wait. I know I’m not unique in looking forward to that “girls only” time, but for me, if feels all the more special as I live in a very hard core male household. With three sons and a sports-minded husband, I live with ESPN in the background of all things. I’m more apt to learn about a football player whose been brought up on a drug bust than any national news event. When I’m not listening to ESPN, I’m being regaled with stories about games I missed. Or I’m being educated on the best way to work out your Serratus Anterior muscle while my eyes glaze over.  Dinner table humor veers toward inappropriate on a daily basis, but I do my best to civilize this loud and mouthy crew.

I love these guys dearly. But today, I can’t wait to escape for a little while! I’ll drive south for a couple of hours to meet my friends, and even that is a different experience. I can stop whenever I want to get coffee. There is no time table. I’m not trying to set a new land-speed record. I will take joy in the journey.

And once I arrive at my destination, we might take an hour to decide where to go out to dinner—only to stay in. Again, no pressure. No drive to get *somewhere.* The point is visiting. Hanging out. Grazing. Gnoshing. Sipping. And laughing a whole lot. Our dinner table conversation might veer toward inappropriate too. But I guarantee I won’t be tempted to kick anyone under the table as a warning lest things get too out of hand.

Then, when I’m ready to leave and make my long journey home again, my girlfriends will mother me. Do I want to spend the night? Do I want a snack for the road? Here, Joanne, let me make you some coffee for the trip. Oh, how I love this! In my house, I’m the only one with the slightest hint of mothering instincts. Here, I’m surrounded my girlfriends who will make sure I’m set off on my journey with everything I might need.

BOTR-mediumNo doubt, I’ll be glad to get back home again tonight when I finally reach my own bed. Maybe I’ll even run into one of my sons in the hallway who has big news from the basketball court. Or baseball field. Or a video game battlefield. But I will feel happier and more patient for having the re-charge time.

There’s a drive in close to where my friend lives and we debated going to a movie tonight, which makes me wonder, have you seen any good movies lately? Let me know what you think and I’ll give one random poster a digital copy of your choice of my Runaway Bride stories, including the latest, BRIDE ON THE RUN.

Hmm. I haven’t seen any good “girls night out” movies lately. I took my seven-year-old to Inside Out on Friday, and it was surprisingly funny/moving/emotional for the adults in the audience. I think for a girls night, I much more apt to a relaxing dinner/drinks or maybe a little shopping anyway. Not as easy to catch up in a theater! We need to chat/gossip/complain about husbands, LOL! Looking forward to reading this series!
