Sara - okay, well, Jo, let's get started
Sara - Tell us about HAZARD, please -- then we can get to the questions
Sara - welcome everyone, our guest tonight is JO BEVERLEY, author of HAZARD. We are on protocol, so type a to be put in queue. I will call on you in order. Thank you!
Oliv - What are we all having Jo
JoB - Hazard is all about risk. About being willing to move out of your safety zone....
Oliv -
JoB - It's also a lot about the barriers of society and how they affect the characters.
HaloOverMyHead - Hello. My first time in chat here.
robbinwood - Will you ever do another book continuting on the story or nicolas and eleanor? I love them!!!!!
Sharon M - ?
JoB - I generally write my books within the boundaries of social rules and mores, though sometimes characters break the rules...
JoB - But this time that's a lot of what the book is about.
RCasteel - welcome Halo
JoB - Hi, Halo.
Sara - welcome -- we are on protocol so type a to be put in the line. Jo will be answering questions in order. Thank you.
Oliv - Janice,
JoB - Oh, Olive, you meant for dinner? I had 40 min to throw something together...
HaloOverMyHead - Thank you. I just want to say how fabulous all of your books are.
JoB - o it's chicken in mushroom soup with parsley, cayenne etc. Rice. Veggies. and Garlic bread.
Sara - Jo, your characters have their own minds ... and we readers (at least this one) love it
RCasteel - took that long for the pizza man to get there?
JoB - I can get away with anything around here if there's garlic bread.<G>
Oliv - Yum pass some over here
Sara - sounds good, Jo
JoB - Thanks, Sara.
Sara - okay, let's go to questions
Sara - caffey has the first question (Oliv, Calder, Sharon M, robbinwood in line)
JoB - Even if those "own minds" drive me crazy sometimes.
Caffey - Jo, your new book is from the characters in The Dragon's Bride and what other book? I'm looking for them, smile.
JoB - Thanks, Halo
Sara - well, that, Jo, we can't help! We need your strong women and men
JoB - Forbidden, which is out of print, alas.
JoB - t you really don't need to have read that to enjoy Hazard.
JoB - It's probably nice to read Dragon's Bride before Hazard, but not essential either.
Caffey - aww
Sara - Oliv has the next question ( Calder, Sharon M, robbinwood, Janice in line)
HaloOverMyHead - ? What is the hardest thing about writing?
HaloOverMyHead - I hope I did that right :|
Caffey - I saw something with a book called Forbidden by you but i think it had another word after it in the title so i wasn't sure
JoB - Halo, I think you have to wait in line. Sorry.
Sara - Halo, hold on to your question. I will put you in the queue
Calder - Why did you decide to give the woman a handicap?
suer - I always buy at least two copies - I have 3 of forbidden if anyone wants one.
Oliv - What inspired you to write in the first place?
JoB - Ah, yes, Caffey. That would be Forbidden Magic. It is a bit confusing.
Sara - ah, FORBIDDEN is a great book, Caffey. Maybe it wil be reissued soon?!?! *fingers crossed*
JoB - That was so the right title for that, though, that I couldn't resist.
JoB - Forbidden was the one title of mine I truly didn't want. There were two others that year alone!
Caffey - I understand. Glad i was here to ask you
JoB - Calder, this will show how the author's mind works, and how cruel we are.<G>
suer - Is there going to be another Rogue book
JoB - Back when I was writing Forbidden, Francis was going to jilt her.....
Oliv - what made you decied to write
mary f - LOL
Sara - and if you get confused, Jo has a great website with her book list and excerpts. I advise you to go look at it to keep it all straight Kimberly1K has timed out.
JoB - knew straight away that she wasn't going to be the convenient bitchy other woman....
Sara - suer, do you want to be put in line?
JoB - And then I thought, what if she has a limp. won't _that_ make him squirm with guilt.<G> And that's the cause of poor Lady Anne's handicap.
suer - yes.
Sara - okay, got cha
Sara - Oliv's question is next, Jo -- what made you decide to write
Oliv - Kar
JoB - Is that it? What made me decide to write? It was that or the loony bin.<G>
Sara - oh, dear, you can't stop there, JO? the loony bin?
HaloOverMyHead - lol
Sharon M - IMHO - you are one of the best his
JoB - I wanted to write from being a teenager. Stories kept invading my head. So one day I decided to really try to do it....
Sara - is this like voices?
Calder - What are your favorite caracter you have created?
JoB - Took me about 4 years from then to sell.
Sharon M - Soory about that!
JoB - Not voices, no, but stories. Especially when going to sleep, I'd come up with characters, give them problems, watch what they did etc.
Sara - wasn't your first published fiction in a science fiction anthology, Jo?
JoB - I always spun off from the end of books -- came up with what happened next to them. Anyone else do that?
Sara - I worry about those voices, Oliv! I really do!
Janice - I sure do, Jo
Sara - I still do that -- especially with the secondary characters
JoB - Yes, Sara, but my first romance was very shortly after.
Sara - doesn't everyone? but it is NOT voices!
Sara - personally, I love your historicals
Sara - Sharon M has the next question (robbinwood, Janice, Halo, suer in line)
JoB - No, not voices. I don't hear anything. It's more like a video.
Sara - we have authors come and tell us about their voices. Chatters remember my honing in on that point
Sharon M - Have you thought about writing a contemp. romance?
JoB - I've lost track of questions, so I'll let Sara feed them.
Sara - Sharon is up now -- Mac has timed out.
JoB - Well, an author's "voice" is a bit different.
JoB - I have written one, Sharon, though whether it will ever be published, I don't know....
JoB - t my true love is historical, so not really.
Sharon M - Have you thought about writing a contemp. romance? So many romance writes that used to write historicals are writing contemps.
Cel - Hi everyone and so sorry to be late
JoB - I like the lords and ladies, knights and castles, riches and honor. All taht stuff.
HaloOverMyHead - - from 207.0.85.158 on 5/22 at 9:06pm EST
Sara - to follow up, Jo -- have you thought about doing another medieval?
JoB - Oh, and men in lace and silk. <G>
Oliv - Me too i love historicals
Janice - Jo, Margie says to say Hi
JoB - Hi back to Janice.
Sara - love your Georgians *sigh*
Sara - ROTHGAR!!!
JoB - Sorry, to Margie.
Sara - still have my button, Jo
JoB - (The guest has arrived. This computer is in the dining room.)
Sara - robbinwood has the next question (Janice, Halo, suer in line)
Sara - oh, dear. Are they going to eat around you?
Sharon M - - from 63.93.31.180 on 5/22 at 9:08pm EST mary f has timed out.
JoB - Rothgar, yes. I'm writing a Malloren story for Christmas 2003
Sara - oh, are we going to have to share you?
Sara - we can be polite. You tell your dh and the guest!
JoB - No, mostly I'll ignore them. But I'm hoping for some wine.<G>
Sara - robbinwood has the next question (Janice, Halo, suer in line)
robbinwood - First, you are my favorite author!! I just read Hazard and loved it. My question is will you ever devote another book continuing on the story of nicholas and eleanor - I love them - surely they aren't done yet? suer has timed out.
Sara - sheena, welcome, our guest tonight is JO BEVERLEY, author of HAZARD. We are on protocol, so type a to be put in queue. I will call on you in order. Thank you!
JoB - Well, they're happy. Is there a story if they're happy?
mary f - Hello Sheena
JoB - I did have their child kidnapped, which is probably cruel enough for me.
sheena - hello everyone
JoB - They'll probably pop up now and then, but I can't see more than that.
Janice - Oh no, kidnapped??
sheena - Mary F, nice to see you here again
Oliv - Calder has timed out.
JoB - Sorry, that's probably a spoiler, but it is last year's book.
robbinwood - Oh I am sure since nicholas cannot keep his hands out of peoples lives - that always causes problems. I am sure you are right - I just get way into the character when I read - can't help it.
Sara - well, popping up is good. I like to get GLIMPSES of past characters
mary f - I do too
JoB - Me too, Robbinwood, which is why I write series. ANd Nicholas is my first hero, so he's special to me.
Oliv - are
Sara - Janice has the next question (Halo, suer, Oliv in line)
HaloOverMyHead -
JoB - And Nicholas is trying _very_ hard not to interfere.
Janice - Jo, I loved Hazard! But I was wondering, wasn't it a concern that Ann might pass the handicap on to her offspring?
JoB - (Got the wine. )
Sara -
JoB - Janice, club foot isn't hereditary to the best of my knowledge.
Janice - But did they know that back then?
JoB - Interesting question, but probably....
robbinwood - What kind of wine
JoB - They could make impirical observations, and they knew all about animal breeding, so I think they'd know what sort of things pass in family's and which don't.
JoB - Chardonnay.
mary f -
Sara - Halo has the next question (suer, Oliv in line)
Caffey - this is getting interesting, i can't wait to read it
Janice -
JoB - LOl, Mary! I wish I could pour you a glass through the screen.
robbinwood - ?
Sara - HaloOverMyHead, you still with us? It is your turn
HaloOverMyHead - I am wondering what do you find to be the hardest thing about being a writer?
JoB - In the middle ages they often thought that handicaps were a sign of sin, especially on the mother's part. But that sort of thinking had passed.
Sara - go ahead and ask your question, Halo
mary f - So do I Jo
HaloOverMyHead - probably get asked that all the time
giftedrhonda - hi all!
JoB - Hardest. Interesting question....
Janice - OK thanks, for some reason I thought they would think it was hereditary
Sara - hi, gifted -- our guest tonight is JO BEVERLEY, author of HAZARD. We are on protocol, so type a to be put in queue. I will call on you in order. Thank you!
JoB - It's probably the point about 2/3 through a book when I become convinced that this one won't work, that it'll be too long, too short, or just plain stupid.
giftedrhonda - thanks sara.
JoB - My husband calls it "that time of the book." because I'm an absolute bear.
giftedrhonda - he he Jo
Sara - oh? does he ply you with wine? or just hide low?
Murialisa - hi
HaloOverMyHead - Thank you for answering my question
Oliv -
HaloOverMyHead - keep getting bumped
JoB - Just makes soothing noises and says that I say that with every book.<G>
Sara - suer has the next question (Oliv, robbinwood in line)
Sara - oh, dear, that can be annoying
JoB - I don't mind. He's right. ANd I need to be reminded that it has worked out 22 times before!
Oliv - my question
Sara - Sue, gone?
Sara - Oliv has the next question (robbinwood in line)
Oliv - Sorry am doing two chats again my question is are you dooking a book sighing tour
JoB - I don't do tours as such, Oliv. I go to some places if my publisher wants. I was in Vancouver last weekend.
JoB - I'll be in Denver for the Romance Writers of America national conference in July, and that includes a hugh signing event.
Sara - and you can see Jo if you go to Celebrate Romance and some conferences, right?
JoB - I try to keep that sort of thing up to date on my web page. jobev.com.
JoB - I was certainly in Las Vegas for Celebrate Romance.
Janice - LOL Sara I was going to mention that.
Oliv - So you are not coiming to Rhode Island Caffey has timed out.
Sara - beat you, Janice
Sara - robbinwood has the next question (giftedrhonda in line)
JoB - I'm going to be in Portland in September, I think. That might not be on the web page.
robbinwood - W
JoB - Sorry, Olive. Not as far as I know!
mary f - ?
Sara - if you ever get a chance to hear Jo, DO IT!!
JoB - Thanks, Sara.
JoB - I enjoy speaking, and I enjoy meeting readers.
Sara - she is entertaining and fun!
Sara - just like her books. I am a fan from way back
robbinwood - What was St. Raven really doing (not really an Orgy?) and Who is your favorite character?
Sara - okay, from 1999 -- that is way back, right?
Janice - She is one of the nicest authors around.
Sara - wait, it was 1998, wasn't it? in Seattle. WOW, our restaurant adventure how CAN I forget that?
Murialisa - according to my mother it is sara
JoB - Robbinwood, St. Raven was definitely at an orgy, but he begins to see the light.
mary f - WB Mac
Oliv - t up
Janice - Sara, I met you that day too!
Mac - Ty, Mary
JoB - No, Seattle was 2000. 1998 was the original Las Vegas Celebrate Romance! That was special.
Sara - that's it? that is all you are going to say about St. Raven?
JoB - And it wasn't his class of orgy.<G> HaloOverMyHead has timed out. sheena has timed out.
Sara - *psst, Janice, Jo forgot Emerald City, the bar, etc)
Sara - *I am safe!!*
Janice - We are talking about the Emerald city conference
JoB - Well, I'm trying not to give spoilers.
Sara - oh, he wanted a HIGHER class orgy?
Janice - We all went to the bar, Jo.
Sara - poor dear!
JoB - But he's trying to help the heroine, who is trying to get back a statuette that contains a fortune in gems.
Sara - where we did NOT get thrown out due to me -- you all were the ones making all the noise there!
Janice - Told her not to have that last drink...
JoB - Oh, no, I didn't forget that, Sara! I though you were talking about CR.
Janice - sssshhh Jo is telling us some good stuff!!
Oliv -
JoB - Sara, he's been in the way of throwing higher class orgies. <G>
Sara - sorry, Jo, you converted me in the bar.
Sara - ooh, sorry, Janice. I was listening!!
JoB - Offers himself as an experienced guide. <G>
Sara - I'm hoping you get to help proof it, Janice!
Janice - Who is his heroine, Jo?
Sara - oh, the guide of experience -- that was helpful of him!
Janice - I want to, Sara!
JoB - The gems are in an erotic Indian statue, which adds some spice, and some complications.
giftedrhonda - Is it time for my question yet?
onwis - ?
Janice - LOL JO!
JoB - Cressida Mandeville, only child of a Nabob (which means a man who made his fortune in India.)
Sara - giftedrhonda has the next question (mary, onwis in line)
onwis - Ok after St Raven and the Mallorens, what?
JoB - She's plump, practical, and curious.
Janice - oops Sara, pay attention!
Sara - yes, sorry, we were pulling details from Jo (you know, since she is having her glass of wine, thought we would take advantage)
giftedrhonda - So approx how many drafts do you write before you know your novel is ready to be submitted?
JoB - Ick! My younger son has just driven off solo for the first time. Yikes!
Janice - plump? I love it!!!!
giftedrhonda - he he sara - that's ok. just wanted to make sure I didn't miss my turn
JoB - Onwis, I don't know. I suspect it will be Stephen Ball, one of the Rogues.
Janice - Jo, he took advantage of you being distracted!
robbinwood - ho the rogues!
onwis - Great, can't wait
JoB - No, it was in the plan. It's probably marginally better than driving with him when he was learning. =:0
Sara - nope, you are up next....I am imagining this heroine. She sounds like fun -- a foil for St. Raven!
Murialisa - it only gets worse from there jo - once they have a license they're just gone. lol.
Janice - The Rogues are my favorites. Their stories are always just what I want.
JoB - definitely a surprise for St. Raven when he finds himself falling for her.
robbinwood - Why a surprise?
JoB - LOL, indeed, Murialisa.
Sara - Jo, did you see gifted question?
mary f - I had a friend get your book for me at CR thanks for signing it! What is you favorite part of the book to writ
Sara - giftedrhonda - So approx how many drafts do you write before you know your novel is ready to be submitted?
Oliv - ou
Murialisa - i have an 18 year old brother, i think my parents see him once or twice a week
mary f - sorry it burped
JoB - He sort of expects to marry a sophisticated aristocratic lady. As is his duty, he thinks.
giftedrhonda - thanks Sara
JoB - No, sorry, Sara. Can you repeat the gifted question?
Sara - no problem, Mary. You are next after Jo tells us how many drafts she does Mac has timed out.
giftedrhonda - well, I can't claim my question was really that gifted. lol
Sara - giftedrhonda - So approx how many drafts do you write before you know your novel is ready to be submitted?
JoB - Mary, my favorite part... I love the beginning, when they're verbally sparring. And the love scene, because of the way Anne behaves.
Janice - The verbal sparring is one of the things you do best, Jo
JoB - sara, re drafts, that's complicated because I go back and edit as I go. But when it's "finished' I still go through it 3 or 4 times.
Sara - gotta agree with that, Janice!
Sara - onwis has the last question
giftedrhonda - thanks Jo
gerri - Hi
Sara - verbal sparring is one of the better parts. Makes sense that Jo loves it -- definitely shows to this reader!
JoB - I love that sort of repartee.
onwis - Not a question, just thanks alot for being such a great author
mary f - I like that part of them myself!
Sara - hi, Gerri. We are finishing our chat with Jo Beverley. Feel free to join us.
Janice - Hi gerri
giftedrhonda - Jo - I just bought my first book of yours, Something Wicked, and I can't wait to read it!
JoB - Onwis, you are very welcome. I write because I enjoy it, and I love it when people read and enjoy what I write.
mary f - Hello Gerri
Oliv - wow
Janice - Oh, gifted, you are in for such a treat!
Sara - Jo, I want to thank you for coming to our chat tonight. HAZARD is a wonderful read -- bright, articulate and a good read! Please visit Jo's website http://jobev.com and check out her description on HAZARD (the game and book)
JoB - Ah, Something Wicked. One of my more dramatic books. I had fun with that. I have fun with them all. It's wicked how much fun I have.<G>
giftedrhonda - I can't wait, Janice - it looks so good!
jomarie - Hi Jo
JoB - Hi Jo.
Sara - we aren't kicking you out, Jo, feel free to stay as long as you can to chat.
jomarie - I loved the book!
JoB - Sorry, Jomarie. Did you have a question?
giftedrhonda - he he Jo. I imagine you'll become someone I will buy just because your name is on the cover.
JoB - Thank you!
Janice - Ah, to be able to experience all of Jo's books for the first time again!
Oliv - I
JoB - I should have said that I have an SF story coming out later this year, I think. (I'm not sure of the date.)
giftedrhonda - i've heard so many wonderful things about her books. i can't wait to read it!
JoB - I like to write something different now and then, and SF&F is my different of choice.
robbinwood - Jo will definately be an author you will buy if her name is on the cover
jomarie - I wrote to you a while back you gave me great advice where to find historical references
JoB - Thank you, Gifted.
Sara - yes, in an anthology with Mary Jo Putney and Catherine Asaro!! I have it on my radar
giftedrhonda - that's so cool, Jo! I love SF
Murialisa - what's it going to be about Jo?
Oliv - Soth
Janice - Can't wait!
JoB - Glad I could help. Jomarie.
mary f - I know Jo's on my autobuy list! LOL
giftedrhonda - ok I'm leaving now. take care everyone, and thanks Jo for talking to us!
JoB - It's called The Trouble With Heroes, and it's about a man who has to develop super magical powers to save the world, but then his people don't want him back....
robbinwood - How long does it take you to write your first rough draft? RCasteel has timed out.
JoB - ANd, of course, the woman who loves him.
Sara - thanks for coming gifted
JoB - Varies, Robbinwood, and as I say, I edit as I go, so I never have a first rougd draft. Perhaps 5 or 6 months?
JoB - I had better go now and say hi to the guest.
JoB - Thanks for coming, everyone.
