BEHIND THE MASK
Metsy Hingle

MIRA Books
December 2002

I'll pay you one million dollars to find my wife and son."

Ex-cop turned bounty hunter Michael Sullivan doesn't think any woman is worth that kind of money, but a job is a job.

All he has to do is make the phone call...

Just drop in the quarter and tell his client he's earned his money. Lily Webster and her son are in New Orleans, where she's working as a waitress. One phone call and he can collect a cool million bucks...and forget the beautiful woman who seems to be hiding something.

Too late, he realizes he's made a mistake...

Only after he's made the call does he begin to realize what he's done. In the blink of an eye Michael Sullivan becomes Lily's only chance for survival. Now all he has to do is convince her to trust him. But why would she put her life— and the life of her son—in the hands of the man who betrayed her?

moosehog - I am confused ladies .LOL
moosehog - Metsy
Mary f - LMAO Moose!
MetsyHingle - Moose, you devil you. I'm blushing.
moosehog - Poor Metsy came in late the other night to support her friend and she was gone . but she is back for her own chat .
moosehog - METSY , If I didn't know you better I might of believed that .
Cissy - Metsy, we'll get started here in just a bit. We like to give latecomers a little extra time to get in
GoddessFawn - I'm Not I saw we get rid of the hat and just let it ALL HANG OUT
MetsyHingle - No problem. It's been a crazed day here in New Orleans for me.
Cissy - I can't wait to hear about this book. I've been waiting to read it!!
Mary f - Hey Mesty My e-mail came back undeliverable.
MetsyHingle - Fawn!!!!
reimer21787 - What's going on in New Orleans?
MetsyHingle - Mary--I don't know why. Just email me at my normal mail address METSYH@aol,.com
Mary f - Dawnie had the same problem
GoddessFawn - Soory I'm a little Nuts over her in Michigan. My birthday is the 13th and I'll be 35 and no kids yet
MetsyHingle - Where do I begin? I've got a TV crew and reporter coming here tomorrow to o a special hour long session for part of a holiday segment for our biggest TV station.
Cissy - Okay, ladies - shall we get started?
moosehog - Mine always get through to Metsy just fine ...even when she wishes they wouldn't .
Cissy - are you excited, Metsy?
GoddessFawn - @ Moose
reimer21787 - Metsy how did you come up with the idea about Behind the Mask?
O -
MetsyHingle - It's called "Twelve For The Road". They interview 12 "celebrities" and have them prepare a non-alcoholic holiday recipe. Christian Le Blanc from Young & the Restless is doing it, the mayor and others. And ME! Can you believe it?
Cissy - Welcome everyone, to our chat with Metsy Hingle! We're talking to Metsy tonight about her new book, BEHIND THE MASK. We'll be working on protocol tonight, so if you have questions for Metsy, please type ? and I'll call on you in turn.
GoddessFawn - Hi Barbs
reimer21787 - ?
MetsyHingle - Um, Cissy. Want me to answer Reimer first?
Barbs - Hi Everyone!
karsim - ?
Cissy - Metsy, before we go on to Q&A, can you tell us about BEHIND THE MASK?
MetsyHingle - Cissy--what is that?
Cissy - Sure, Metsy - you can take it as the first question
GoddessFawn - That is a goddess
Cissy - what's what, Metsy?
MetsyHingle - Wait. Now I have my other answer ready. So I'll give that and then go on to Reimer.
MetsyHingle - "BEHIND THE MASK" is my new romantic suspense set in New Orleans during the height of Mardi Gras.
MetsyHingle - It's the story of ex-cop turned bounty hunter Michael Sullivan who's offered one-million dollars to find a runaway wife. Only after he's made the phone call to collect his bounty does he realize he's made a mistake and unleashed a monster.
MetsyHingle - Now to Reimer's question--I adore Mardi Gras and have always been fascinated by it and the participants. You never know who's standing next to you in those costumes and masks. It could be a serial killer, a celebrity, etc. So I wanted my hero and heroine to hide behind the masks as they try to escape.
moosehog - Metsy . How hard was it for you to go from a series writer for HQ to a single title author with books like The Wager and Behind The Mask?
GoddessFawn - cool
moosehog - Hey , question ... get back here . You jumped the gun ...Just like a man >!!!!
Cissy - moose, hang on please!
Mac - lol
Cissy - moosehog has the first question (O, karsim in line)
Celeste - hi everyone
GoddessFawn - @ moose
Cissy - lol - moose's question is out there
Sara -
Cissy - Hi Celeste & Degan! Welcome to our chat with Metsy Hingle! We're talking to Metsy tonight about her new book, BEHIND THE MASK. We'll be working on protocol tonight, so if you have questions for Metsy, please type ? and I'll call on you in turn.
MetsyHingle - Actually, it wasn't all that hard. I'd been hearing for some time from my editors that my stories were too mainstream. My friend Sandra Brown said I should listen to what my inner voice was saying. The truth is, I found it easier to write the longer book than the shorter ones.
Degan - Hi everyone! Hi Metsy!
moosehog - Psst*** makes sense the question was male doesn't it ????
BadBarb -
Cissy - I think you were made for single titles, Metsy
Cissy - Hi Barb Welcome to our chat with Metsy Hingle! We're talking to Metsy tonight about her new book, BEHIND THE MASK. We'll be working on protocol tonight, so if you have questions for Metsy, please type ? and I'll call on you in turn.
BadBarb - Hi barbs, celesete, cissy, degan, fawn, mac, mary, metsy,o,sara, karsim, diana and reimer
Cissy - O has the next question (karsim in line)
GoddessFawn - you got that right Moose
BadBarb - Im sorrry Im late had to reboot
MetsyHingle - Ah, Cissy. Thanks. That's so sweet. Let's home the buying public thinks so and likes the books.
Barbs - Hi BB
MetsyHingle - Oops. I meant lets "hope" the public agrees and you gals want to buy my books.
GoddessFawn - Men like wam bam while we like slow and steaady
BadBarb - hi hunt //wve
Barbs - I already picked it up
Celeste - WOW Metsy, your banner is stunning...that alone makes me want to buy the book
Cissy - Hi Hunt Welcome to our chat with Metsy Hingle! We're talking to Metsy tonight about her new book, BEHIND THE MASK. We'll be working on protocol tonight, so if you have questions for Metsy, please type ? and I'll call on you in turn.
Hunt4Me2 - hello im backkkkkkkkk
BadBarb - I hope you paid for it Barbs
reimer21787 - ?
MetsyHingle - Aw, Celeste. Aren't you just the sweetest thing. Thanks.
Mary f - Hello Bad Barb
Hunt4Me2 - Hello Barb, & Cissy (no 'r')
Cissy - O has the next question (karsim, reimer in line)
Hunt4Me2 - Cissy i was in here at 830
BadBarb -
MetsyHingle - Thanks, Barb. I hope you like it.
Degan - Buy it Celeste -- its really good!
karsim - when you written a story has the ending ever came first before the middle of the story
Celeste - I happened to have read the excerpt, so that sold me on buying it
Barbs - I'm sure I will
MetsyHingle - Bad Barb--I like that. May have to use it in a book.
Hunt4Me2 - ahhhh cute Santa
Celeste - don't rub it it, Degan
Barbs - I'm surprised Kiki not here I know she planned on it
reimer21787 - I like the Santa too
BadBarb - sure be my guest
O - What inpisred you to write in the first place. Did you keep a jounral
BadBarb - that would be awesome!
Barbs - she also has bought Behind the Mask
BadBarb - I honestly think I was misnamed
MetsyHingle - Karsim--Actually the first thing that comes to me for a story is the opening line. Once I have that, I can usually go. I do know where I'm going and how I want it to end.
BadBarb - ?
Barbs - you know why I'm Barbs?
Sara - *snort* right, BADBarb
karsim - Mesty while writting a story has the ending ever came first before the middle of the story
Cissy - uh huh, Barb
MetsyHingle - What I should say is that the middle is often the tricky part. I don't always know everything that's going to happen until I'm into the story.
Barbs - I'm the baby and I'm sure my brothers said Barb's wants it!
BadBarb - you dont believe me Sara?
Barbs - and my mother made them give it to me
reimer21787 - Metsy are there any of your hero's that you had a hard time letting go of?
karsim - so the middle is hard for a writer than the ending
BadBarb - Barbs, Im the oldest
Cissy - Reimer has the next question (BadBarb in line)
Cissy - guys, I'll call on you! I promse
Sara - sorry, Bad, I know I can stretch my imagination...but only SO far. And Barbs, so you get EVERY thing, do you?
BadBarb - sometimes it can be a good thig for the middle to be hard
Barbs - that's why you're BB
BadBarb - oops thing
O -
Sara - gee, as a reader there are a couple of Metsy's heroes I had a hard time letting go of
Sara - does that count?
Barbs - from my big brothers I got it all some I didn't want
MetsyHingle - Reimer--Actually the hero in the book I can let go of because I know he's in a good place, with the person he needs and wants in his life. It's those pesky secondary characters--usually the heros--who beg for their own stories. Those I never forget.
Barbs - ?
MetsyHingle - Glad you like my heroes, Sara. I aim to please.
Cissy - Hi LizB Welcome to our chat with Metsy Hingle! We're talking to Metsy tonight about her new book, BEHIND THE MASK. We'll be working on protocol tonight, so if you have questions for Metsy, please type ? and I'll call on you in turn.
BadBarb - hi liz
Cissy - BadBarb has the next question (O, Barbs in line)
BadBarb - Metsy, how long does it take for you to write a book normally?
Degan - whups. looks like the munchkin is calling. Behind the Mask was terrific, Metsy! Bye everyone
GoddessFawn - by dagan
MetsyHingle - BadBarb--You would ask that question. I hate to tell you how quickly I've written some books. I can write a Silhouette Desire in a month, but prefer to have two months. I wrote BEHIND THE MASK in 22 days and nearly killed myself. Ideally, I'd like six months to do it justice.
karsim - Hi liz
Cissy - oops, we lost moose
GoddessFawn - WOW thats quick
BadBarb - wow
Cissy - wow, that's either impressive or scary, Metsy. Both I think
BadBarb - thats awesome
Cissy - O has the next question (Barbs in line)
Mary f - That's AW
BadBarb - is Behind the mask a single title or a Desire?
Mary f - AWESOME
O - Where do you live?
MetsyHingle - Quick, yes. But I don't recommend it. I got boxed in and behind on deadlines last year when my husband became very ill and was hospitalized. All deadlines were shot and I've been playing catch up ever since.
reimer21787 - its a single title
BadBarb - I didnt read the blurb when I came in here, cause I was late
BadBarb - oh hanks reimer
Cissy - welcome back, Liz
MetsyHingle - Behind The Mask is a romantic suspense single title from MIRA Books out now.
O - Is he feeling better
BadBarb - I mean thanks reimer, I have new fingers and they arent working right yet
Cissy - Barbs has the next question (no one in line)
Cissy - ?
MetsyHingle - What I should say about the writing fast is that I write very long synopses for my work, so I have a real handle on my characters and usually know where I'm going.
Barbs - are there any secondary characters that you would like to write their stories that you haven't yet?
karsim - ?
OL - Was my question aswered i got knocked out where do you live
MetsyHingle - Barbs--There are quite a few. I'd love to do Travis Sullivan's story from Behind The Mask. And I'm itching to do Faith and Nick's story from The Wager.
MetsyHingle - OL--I live in New Orleans.
Cissy - Cissy has the next question (karsim in line)
OL -
GoddessFawn - Scratch the itch Scratch the itch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Barbs - I hope you get to then I'll be waiting for them
BadBarb - I love New Orleans
Cissy - Metsy, do you have a favorite scene in BEHIND THE MASK? And will you tell us about it?
MetsyHingle - Then you'll love Behind The Mask. That's where it's set--during Mardi Gras.
Cissy - lol, Fawn
reimer21787 - ?
MetsyHingle - Favorite Scene--There were several of them. My favorite was problem near the end--the chase through the streets at Mardi Gras, everyone in costume, no one knowing who was "real" and who wasn't.
Cissy - lol, Fawn
MetsyHingle - Oops meant to type "probably". My granddaughter came in and distracted me.
Cissy - oh sounds cool, Metsy
Cissy - karsim has the next question (O, reimer in line)
Sara - ooh, I liked that scene too. Your book was so fast paced -- had to keep reading to see what would happen next
Sara - love that!
karsim - have you thought of writting a werewolf or vampire or ghost romance story
Mary f - Oh that sounds like such fun
OL - No please don't
Sara - ?
MetsyHingle - Karsim--I'm a real scaredy cat. Had nightmares after seeing the Wizard of Oz. While the ghost romance wouldn't bother me, I'd be too afraid to do the werewolf or vampire. Don't forget--I'm a New Orleans girl, Catholic to boot, which means I'm superstitous.
Willie - Hi, everyone
MetsyHingle - Sara--So glad you enjoyed the book. "Fast paced" is the comment I'm getting from all my fan mail.
Cissy - O has the next question (reimer, Sara in line)
karsim - lllol
karsim -
OL - What do you want to wriate that you havn't written before
Sara - fast paced is GREAT!! makes you *need* to keep reading!
MetsyHingle - OL--I adore romantic suspense and I'm getting to do that now. I still want to do a story about twins and I want to do a military romantic suspense--sort of like JAG heroes and heroines.
reimer21787 - How did you research the bounty hunter part of the story?
Cissy - reimer has the next question (Sara in line)
MetsyHingle - I actually talked to some detectives, a few police officers and deputies and I had clipped a number of things about the bounty hunters. They're really not all that heroic. Actually, they can be frightening, but I decided my hero was a renegade in need of redemption so I could get away with it.
BadBarb -
Sara - ah good, Metsy, because I think real bounty hunters are NOT nice people.
BadBarb - I love bounty hunters
Sara - unlike what they are like in fiction
Sara - I rest my case
MetsyHingle - Sara--They're not. I did speak to one on the phone and opted not to interview him in person. Gave me the creeps.
Mary f - LMAO Sara
Strangerofthenight - hi
Cissy - Sara has the next question (no one in line)
Strangerofthenight - how is everyone this evening?
Cissy - Hi Strangerofthenight Welcome to our chat with Metsy Hingle! We're talking to Metsy tonight about her new book, BEHIND THE MASK. We'll be working on protocol tonight, so if you have questions for Metsy, please type ? and I'll call on you in turn.
BadBarb - ?
Sara - Metsy, what is the most romantic thing your hero does in BEHIND THE MASK?
OL -
MetsyHingle - Sara--I don't want to give anything away. But I thought his tenderness with the little boy (Timmy) was romantic. I fell in love with my own husband because I admired him as a father.
MetsyHingle - That's not to say that Michael (my hero in Behind the Mask) was not skilled between the sheets. He was!
OL - how sweet
Sara - ah, that is sweet, Metsy
dawnie -
GoddessFawn - OMG I've got to get this book. OMG but i am broke until the 13th boo hooing
Sara - yes, he was, but between the sheets is not necessarily the MOST romantic
Cissy - Hi dawnie Welcome to our chat with Metsy Hingle! We're talking to Metsy tonight about her new book, BEHIND THE MASK. We'll be working on protocol tonight, so if you have questions for Metsy, please type ? and I'll call on you in turn.
Mary f - LMAO Hello Dawnie!
MetsyHingle - GoddessFawn--Put it on your Christmas list.
Cissy - BadBarb has the next question (O in line)
BadBarb - who do you like to read when you aren't writing?
dawnie - will do Cissy
Willie - g
Willie - Good night everyone
BadBarb - nite willie hi dawn
GoddessFawn - I already have gift certificates to bookstores on my wish list for both my birthday and chrismas
OL - that was my question
BadBarb -
Cissy - You can think of another one, O!
MetsyHingle - When I'm not writing, I try to read my friends--I love Sandra Brown's work, Hailey North, Dixie Kane (who used to be Linda Kay), Merline Lovelace and Maggie Price, Carly Phillips. I also read Grisham, Turow, I read the Diana Diamond pick by Kelly Ripa--knew it was a guy who wrote that book with all the technical stuff.
BadBarb - poor OL
Hunt4Me2 - .
GoddessFawn - I Hate my birthday being so close to christmas though
BadBarb - Dixie was just in chat here on Sunday
Cissy - O has the next question (Cissy in line)
Cissy - yeah, we had a great chat with her
MetsyHingle - How on earth did I forget the auto buy list--anything by Nora Roberts, J.D. Robb, Jayne Anne Krentz.
karsim -
BadBarb -
reimer21787 - I like the Santa and sleigh
GoddessFawn - hey you forgot !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BadBarb - I love those authors too Metsy
OL - If you could go back in time who would you like to meet
dawnie - Hi Cait
MetsyHingle - You guys are just showing off to this technically impaired writer.
BadBarb - HI cait
Mary f - Great list of authors!
Mary f - Hello Cait!
karsim -
Celeste - Hi Cait
GoddessFawn - Hi Cait
BadBarb - Metsy, you are more then welcome to come to our Saturday night pj parties and play around with them
Mac - Hi, Cait
Cissy - Hi Cait!
Cait - hi, people. just passing thru before calling it a night. go ahead.
BadBarb - they are held here in the chatters lounge and we have a blast
Cait - oh, SHE'S here.
karsim -
Mary f - They are fun!
BadBarb - who cissy?
BadBarb -
MetsyHingle - Hmmm. Who would I like to meet? Cleopatra. She was a woman forced to compete for power in a man's world.
Cissy - Metsy, did you see O's question?
Cissy - oops, guess you did
Cissy - who "she" Cait?
Cait - you know--HER. The fairy woman. HERRRR.
O - Good answer
BadBarb - yeah Cait seems familiar but its been awhile since I seen her in chat
Cissy - lol, Cait - I'm here every night
BadBarb - no she isnt!! she isnt here on Saturday nights
Cissy - Metsy, can you tell us a bit more about your hero and heroine? What their personalities are like?
karsim - ?
O - she answered it
Mary f - LMAO Barb
Barbs - ?
Cissy - well I have to have a night off, Barb!
BadBarb - exactly, you can party
Sara - yup, she does
Sara - and tuesdays during Buffy season too
GoddessFawn -
Cissy - hey, lately I've been here every Tuesday too!
Cissy - Such sacrifices I make...
Sara - true, a great sacrifice and I appreciate it
GoddessFawn - Yeah Buffy's been reruns lately
MetsyHingle - Michael, the hero in Behind The Mask, is a bitter man who blames himself for his partner's death and has vowed never again to fall for a beautiful woman's sob story. He's through being a hero. My heroine is a woman who is not only beautiful, but she's a woman in desperate need of a hero. She's just escaped an abusive, manipulative relationship in order to save her son's life. .
Sara - is Metsy thinking about personalities?
Sara - did you stump her? oh, never mind!
reimer21787 - ?
Cait - That's a gorgeous cover, Metsy.
Cissy - oh wow, Metsy - sounds wonderful
Cissy - karsim has the next question (Barbs in line)
GoddessFawn - poor o Keeps getting booted here ahve a
MetsyHingle - Thanks, Cait. It's so much nicer than the original one--and of course, there's a story that goes with the cover change.
Cait - Mira is doing wonderful covers now.
MetsyHingle - Most of the time they are wonderful. But not that first one for Behind The Mask.
Hunt4Me2 - ROTFL sorry reading a review on Amazon.com and the reviewer had the comment of "Did you know that romances were collectible? " i thought that was too funny
Cissy - karsim? Your question?
karsim - where and when did you come up with the idea for behind the mask
Hunt4Me2 - .
MetsyHingle - As I said earlier, I've always been fascinated with Mardi Gras and wanted to do a story set here during that time. Then I thought about the "masks" and how you really don't know who someone is behind that mask or even the ones without them. They could be a serial killer, a Hollywood heartthrob or an ordinary Joe.
Hunt4Me2 - OK room went dead i guess
Cissy - Barbs has the next question (reimer in line) queue is closed
Cissy - No, Hunt - we were just waiting for Metsy's answer
Barbs - How many Desires do you release on average in a year?
Hunt4Me2 - Metsy ...I picked up 2 of Mardi Gras posters a few hears ago they are still in the roll...they are GREAT the colours are faniminal
MetsyHingle - Hunt--they're collector's items--particularly if you get the artist to sign it.
Cissy - reimer has the last question
reimer21787 - How old is the little boy in the story?
MetsyHingle - Barbs--The release schedule depends on Silhouette. Buy I've been writing two series books and one single title a year.
Hunt4Me2 - this i sent away for and now i regret that i didnt keep the address...cause I would love a few more for my office down in the basement
Hunt4Me2 - I still have tonz of beads and coins left tho....my cousins grew up and lived there for 20 years
Barbs - thank you I was just curious
MetsyHingle - Oops, "buy" is on the brain. Meant to type "But". For instance, I had a January and June Desire and a December single title this year. Next year, I have an April Silhouette single-title continuity book, a December Silhouette Desire continuity book and a December single title from MIRA.
Barbs - do you find that is enough for you?
Hunt4Me2 - can i ask just one question?
MetsyHingle - Barbs--Do I find that 3 books a year is enough? Yes. If anything, I'd like to slow down a bit.
Cissy - it's just not enough for US, Metsy
GoddessFawn - "BUY" is on everyones brain right now Metsy
Cissy - but we'll take what we can get
Barbs - How long have you written?
Cissy - Metsy, did you see reimer's question?
Hunt4Me2 - what do u find u like writing better the 'g' rated silhouette or the spicer ones like Intimate moments?
Barbs - You're right Cissy Not Enough
MetsyHingle - Hunt--Have you read a Silhouette Desire? They're the spiciest of the Silhouette lines. And that's what I write.
MetsyHingle - Reimer--Sorry I didn't see it. Timmy is 3 years old in Behind The Mask.
Cissy - oh, what a cute age
Hunt4Me2 - WOW Elloras Cave had a spot in Decembers RT mag
Mac - Sil. Desire is my fav line...they are what I mostly read, though I follow Diana Palmer to any line she writes for....
Cissy - Metsy, our hour's just flown past. Thank you for a great chat!
Cissy - BEHIND THE MASK sounds fabulous
Mary f - Mesty that one didn't work either I sent it to your web addy okay?
Hunt4Me2 - there are Silhouettes, Silhouette Desire, & Silhouette Int Mom
GoddessFawn - I Read ANY romance
Barbs - thank you Metsy and Cissy
Celeste - thanks for chatting, Metsy, and I look forward to reading BEHIND THE MASK
Hunt4Me2 - from 'g' to what 'pg'?
karsim - I buy all of metsy books
Cissy - definitely R, Hunt
reimer21787 - I buy all of Metsy's books also
Mary f - Thanks for the Chat!
MetsyHingle - Thanks, Cissy and everyone for coming by. It was a pleasure. And if anyone here doesn't already have my commemorative bookmark, write me at METSYH@aol.com with your address and I'll send it to you. That's "METSYH@aol.com" all caps on the name. Happy Holidays.Happy Holidays.
Hunt4Me2 - lol i had to look at my library to see what they all were called
Sara - thank you Metsy
Mac - I read what mom buys....Sorry, broke here.
karsim - thanks metsy for the chat
Barbs - goodnight ladies
Cissy - Thanks so much, Metsy!
MetsyHingle - Bye everyone.
