Romance Cafe - Kathy Carmichael 11/24/01

LeeHyat - Hi wimew! Welcome to the Romance Cafe chat! Tonight we're chatting with romance author Kathy Carmichael about her novel, CHASING CHARLIE! Please note there is No Protocol so feel free to jump in whenever you're ready. Thanks and enjoy the chat!
KathyCarmichael - I LOVE that one too, Kat! Doris Day is my favorite actress
KathyCarmichael - Thanks Lee
LeeHyat - LOL, Susan!
KathyCarmichael - Trish is romantic comedy, Susan. She's got tw
KathyCarmichael - oks out now
KathyCarmichael - two books out now
KathyCarmichael - that was weird
KathyCarmichael - Hi wimew!
mary f has timed out.
LeeHyat - hey, did Trish ever come back from the kitchen?? i hope her puppy is okay!!
SusanF - Don't you think that in real life falling in love doesn't have a lot of conflict like we have to put in our stories?
KathyCarmichael - I so wanted to be her when I was growing up <g>
wimew - Hello Kathy
LeeHyat - and whatever was burning!!
KathyCarmichael - For me it did, Susan. Didn't it for you?
Rosedust2 - KC. In writeing, it never comes off as if there is anything but a quqrrel. I'm trying though to over come that problem
LeeHyat - and whatever was burning!!
Rosedust2 - Quarrel
trishj - The puppy's fine, Lee. The rice, on the other hand...
KathyCarmichael - When I met my husband, I had broken up with three different men who'd asked me to marry them. I never wanted to marry. I had to overcome that.
KathyCarmichael - Hugs Trish!
KatBos - Yikes, Trish. Does the puppy eat burned rice? LOL
SusanF - Not much conflict for me, but that was because I was struck stupid. lol And when most people tell me about their love stories in real life, there's almost no conflict.
Rosedust2 - I always wanted to be Bette Davis
LeeHyat - there you are. LOL, good to know the puppy's okay. too bad about the rice! LOL
KathyCarmichael - My hubby broke up with his last girl because she wanted to marry and he wasn't =in love= with her. It took him 3 years to convince me <g>
KathyCarmichael - Really!?!!! Bette Davis! Wow
KatBos - KC, that's some GREAT conflict there!!
KathyCarmichael - I think real conflict often takes longer than it takes in our books.
trishj - Now I don't mean to be rude, but I've thought of frying her up myself. She's something of a handful.
LeeHyat - that's true, KC.
Rosedust2 - She had all the answers and always got her man even if it meant bumping someone off
KathyCarmichael - rofl trish
KatBos - Trish! Poor Cassie!!
LeeHyat - LOL Trish
SusanF - lol, Rosedust
trishj - Lee? Thanks so much for giving us a head's up on this chat. Did KC notify me? NOOOOOO! I'm thinking she's afraid I'll reveal all her secrets. Having her son join was brilliant. I must be tame. Dangit.
KathyCarmichael - LOL Rosedust!
LeeHyat - What was the best piece of advice you received while you were working to become published, KC?
KathyCarmichael - It's my 16 year old son and his girlfriend, Trish.
BadBarb - logged on - from 64.12.103.172 on 11/24 at 9:30pm EST
KathyCarmichael - They're here for added entertainment if I'm too boring
Rosedust2 - But realy, there are very few conflicts that can't be settled in one lpng sit down unless you do throw in a lot of comedy to stop progress
BadBarb - hi
KatBos - Hmmmm, Trish, come to think of it, she didn't inform me either! So, I'm very grateful for Lee's email!!
LeeHyat - Trish, you're most welcome! I"m so glad you all could come.
shey - Hey Barb
KathyCarmichael - The best advice was to not quit, ever. Oh wait, Trish, what did you tell me????
KatBos - Hey Barb!
BadBarb - hi kathyB, kathyC,leena, merry, rose, susan, maz, shey, trish, wimew and mommy
LeeHyat - Hi BadBarb! Welcome to the Romance Cafe chat! Tonight we're chatting with romance author Kathy Carmichael about her novel, CHASING CHARLIE! Please note there is No Protocol so feel free to jump in whenever you're ready. Thanks and enjoy the chat!
KathyCarmichael - Hi BadBarb
KathyCarmichael - I've been writing!!!! Head in sand.
BadBarb - v
KatBos - Well, KC, we'll forgive you just this once!!
SusanF - Hi BadBarb
KathyCarmichael - Thanks Kat
LeeHyat - LOL
trishj - KC: Is your son still here? In which case I won't be reminding you what I told you.
KathyCarmichael - Seriously -- it sounds trite saying not to quit -- but it's absolutely true.
SusanF - Hey Kathy--what kind of comedic scene WOULDN'T you put in a story?
KathyCarmichael - A screenwriter came to my chapter in Mobile --
LeeHyat - so what advice would you pass on to aspiring writers, KC?
KathyCarmichael - and he said it was proven, that if you stick with it, you WILL sell. He was right.
LeeHyat - I come close to quitting each month. but I'm a sadist by nature and like torturing myself so I keep hanging on......... even if I only write 10 pages a month. <sick!!>
KathyCarmichael - Susan, I don't like to write hurtful scenes -- ones where a character has fun at the emotional expense of another. To me that's not funny, but it's in lots of today's books
shey - good advice...I mean you are never going to sell if you quit are you
LeeHyat - Kat, you're working on a novel, too, aren't you??
SusanF - Lee--You've just defined one of the basic character qualities of successful writers--lol
trishj - When there's a break in the questions, boy do I have a KC story to tell.
Merry Contrary - logged on. - from 165.121.230.110 on 11/24 at 9:34pm EST
KatBos - Lee, actually three.....so far.
KathyCarmichael - uch oh -- payback is hell I suspect <g>
SusanF - Yes it is, K. And in some movies. And I don't like that kind of comedy either.
KatBos - Trish, tell, tell!!! I insist!!
Rosedust2 - hi merry
KathyCarmichael - Yay Kat!
KathyCarmichael - WB Merry!
LeeHyat - LOL Susan, that's heartening to know. thanks!
wimew - I ditta Katbos!
LeeHyat - Kat, you've written 3 novels??!! wow!
BadBarb - brb
Merry Contrary - Hello again.
LeeHyat - wb Merry! //wve
LeeHyat -
KatBos - No, Lee, I'm working on three. LOL
trishj - But don't tell her. I'll send it privately to everyone but her. (Right, like I could figure out this system)
wimew - WB merry
ILoveMyMommy has timed out.
trishj - Hi, Merry!
KathyCarmichael - I think being stubborn is the single most determining factor in whether you'll sell books.
LeeHyat - 3 at one time?! you're sooo brave, Kat!
trishj - Oooh, does that mean little Carmichael is no longer with us?
Rosedust2 - That makes me admit I am working on three ms now. Maybe four. Is that self defeating
LeeHyat - Trish I want to hear this story too! do tell!
KathyCarmichael - uch oh <g>
Rosedust2 - Stubborn! I should sell tomorrow
trishj - Kat: I am POSITIVE you should be writing YA novels!
KathyCarmichael - I always work on several things at once, Rose and Kat, but usually one has a priority.
LeeHyat - Trish, I take it you've read Kat's work? I'll bet she's good!
KathyCarmichael - So, what story are you going to tell about me, Trish? And why are my knees knocking?
Rosedust2 - Yeah. I have one in particular that gets most of my time. Its a comedy
SusanF - Stubborn/sadistic/masochistic/neurotic/obsessive/just plain nuts: gets you sold.
KathyCarmichael - I think lil Carmichael is smooching with his girl <g>
KathyCarmichael - Cool Rose
LeeHyat - oh wonderful combination, Susan!! LOL
Rosedust2 - I am a sure winner then!
KatBos - Lee, I also have ideas for several more but am keeing copious notes.
SusanF - Uh oh. See Kathy? Not much conflict for most of those falling in love in real life. Unless it's external conflict=as in, mom lowers the boom.
KathyCarmichael - Yeah, I can honestly say that every writer I know who's sold tends to be obsessive/stubborn/persistent/ plus a very very heavy reader.
KatBos - keeing??? keeping, I mean. LOL
trishj - Here's the skinny: I gave up. Totally. I called Kathy and said I was pulling my books, and going into bookkeeping or something. I COMPLETELY gave up. She wouldn't let me. She talked all night, tag-teamed with our buddy Terry (cont)
KathyCarmichael - LOL
BadBarb - 's your fibl
shey - that's tha hard bit when you have heaps of ideas and can't get them all down
KatBos - Well, I can definitely fit the heavy reading part.
KathyCarmichael - we all have heaps of ideas, shey -- you write notes about them but keep writing on the MAIN story.
SusanF - You can't write if you don't read lots of books.
maz has timed out.
KatBos - Trish, I just cannot imagine you in bookkeeping......
SusanF - Yes, shey. Pick one and take it all the way to the end.
KathyCarmichael - LOL over Trish as a bookkeeper <g>
shey - my problem is I spend tooooo much time reading when I should be writing <G>
trishj - They kept at it all the next morning. KC had to leave because of tummy problems, and I still wasn't convinced I shouldn't be selling dictionaries. A few moments later, an editor called to tell me they were rejecting Just This Once (see, Kat????)
Rosedust2 - I agree with shey. My mind whirls with all the ideas I have and I am constantly makeing up scenes as I wash dishe or make beds. It never leaves
shey - I am trying ...
LeeHyat - poor Trish
KatBos - Trish, did you get my email earlier about Just This Once? Hmmm?????
SusanF - The longer you work at it, the easier it gets to keep your mind on only one story.
shey - or something simple comes up...I was chatting to my 10 year old about a story she was writing for school and had a brain wave....so if it ever gets published I will have to give her a thank you for the idea
KathyCarmichael - While I'm writing one, I think about the next in the baccckkk of my mind.
shey - oh well I am still in the infancy stages of writing so I know that I will only get better as I go along
trishj - But they'd like to buy The Harder They Fall. Here's the funny part. That editor had to call Kathy for my phone number, because she couldn't find it. So KC not only knew I'd sold before I did, she stopped me from telling them to go to Hades right before they bought. She's my hero. And the funniest contemp writer I know.
SusanF - Kath--What I want to know is, when will you write the one about the hotel?
LeeHyat - Trish, so then what happened??? after you got the call with the rejection?
KatBos - My best ideas come when I'm just dropping off to sleep. In that drowsing stage.
gerri - - from 172.134.83.176 on 11/24 at 9:44pm EST
Rosedust2 - Do you have your story pretty well worked out in your mind before you put it on paper? I do. They ave names, ages and personalitys when I start out
KathyCarmichael - Ahh, thanks Trishie The editor PRETENDED not to know Trish's number just so she could tell me first <ggg>
wimew - Hello Gerri
LeeHyat - Hi Gerri! Welcome to the Romance Cafe chat! Tonight we're chatting with romance author Kathy Carmichael about her novel, CHASING CHARLIE! Please note there is No Protocol so feel free to jump in whenever you're ready. Thanks and enjoy the chat!
gerri - Hi everyone
KathyCarmichael - LOL Susan, one of these days I will
SusanF - Hi gerri
Rosedust2 - hi gerri
LeeHyat - oh that's great, Trish! And KC's pretty darn special, huh?
KatBos - Well, I hate to do this but I'm exhausted so I best go for now. Night and KC, I can't wait to read your next one!!
KathyCarmichael - I kind of have an idea about who they are as people and what their conflicts might be, but my characters often surprise me.
Rosedust2 - nite Kat
KathyCarmichael - Night Kat! Thanks ::smooch::
LeeHyat - Kat, thanks for coming!! Night!
trishj - Night, Kat, my Southern Peach!

LeeHyat - rofl!!
KathyCarmichael - ROFL Thanks, I think, Susan <g>
SusanF - Night Kat
SusanF - Didn't you see the wink?
trishj - KC's my love, Lee. And one of the best writers I know. Her books are simply adorable. But that's probably because she has such great critique partners <g>
SusanF - The wink was for the last sentence.
SusanF - lol-
KathyCarmichael - Right now I'm thinking about a new idea but I only have the secondaries, no hero or heroine yet <g>
SusanF - You "hear" Kathy in her stories, and that's what makes her writing great.

LeeHyat - Shey, no it's quiet.

KathyCarmichael - Thanks for coming Sara
KathyCarmichael - Were they at all accurate, Sara?
