Janelle Denison - All my characters usually develop after I have the initial premise to the story. I can't say that anyone in particular inspired Ian -- but he is my typical kind of hero that I love to write. He's a man who knows what he wants, and he goes after it no-holds-barred -- and that's usually the heroine.

Janelle Denison - Denise -- I have at least a dozen different stories that never sold, and probably never will. I wrote for a lot of years before I published my first book, and collected many rejections along the way. Persistence is the key to getting published, I believe!

Jamie Denton - Denise - I started out writing historical, and thankfully none of those will ever see the light of day. My first attempt at a series romance however, did sell. It wasn't all sunshine and roses after that however, but perseverence is a necessity for survival.

Missy - This is for each of you...do you work with a critique partner, why or why not? And if so, what do you recommend for a good relationship with such a person.
Janelle Denison - No, I'm very much a linear thinker. I have to finish one story before I can start the other, or else I lose track of characters, plot, and conflict, and who they belong to!

IsabelSharpe - Missy, yes I do. I have four wonderful women who come to my house every other week and we all cheerfully rip each other's stories to shreds. But it takes a lot of trust and a lot of self-confidence for each writer to be able to take the criticism that works and reject the rest.

IsabelSharpe - re: critique partners, if you feel beaten down and discouraged then they're not for you. You should get really excited by the comments they make--the chance to make your work better!

Jamie Denton - I believe a career relationship is what's most important once you reach a certain stage in your writing. Someone who's always there for you for moral support, some serious buttkicking when needed and someone you can pick up the phone and talk to day or night.

Janelle Denison - I don't do humor as a rule -- if it happens to make its way into a story, great, but I can't write a Duets because I'm just not a funny writer.
Sara - so, a career relationship person is not always a critique partner?
Jamie Denton - I don't strive for humor, not as a rule. For me, it generally just comes from my characters, if that makes any sense whatsoever.

Lori - Sabrina--I gave up critique partners--too many cooks sort of thing--but I love brainstorming partners, I find that more helpful than someone nitpicking
IsabelSharpe - Well I was timid in my first Duets, but gradually I let my humor all hang out. And there are people who don't like my humor (of course I leave out the really sick stuff <g> . But I feel that if you think it's hysterical, at least someone else will.

Jamie Denton - Sara - I view them as different. A career partner is someone you can discuss your career with, someone who will offer sound advice and vice-versa. It has to be a two way street.
