Jayne Ann Krentz Chat 10/05/00

Jayne - logged on - 10/5 at 8:53pm EST
Dionegia - I had to re-log-on [if that is such a word]
Niseé - Hi Jayne
Cissy - Hi Jayne
Jayne - Good evening, folks!
josephine - hi
mireya - Yahoo, finally get to talk to you.
Jayne - Hi, Cissy. Any rules tonight?
SandraW - Hello Jayne, it's so nice to meet you and have a chance to chat to you! I've been a fan for so many years.
Jayne - Special welcome to our first time chatters! Glad you found us.
sdc - Hi Jayne
Cissy - Yep, Jayne - we'll be following a protocol, so that you aren't hit with everyone's questions at once. Everyone, please type ? to line up with your question and I'll call on you in turn.
misty - hi there! thanks for chating with us, Jayne!
sdc - so what have you been working on Jayne
mireya - Love your books, Miss J. My favorite was Deception and Amaryllis. Where do youget your ideas for the futuristic books?
Jayne - I really appreciate all of your enthusiasm for my books!
Cissy - Jayne would you like to say anything to the group while we're all lining up?
Jayne - Sure, Cissy. Thanks for being here instead of watching the vp debates! I know it must have been a tough choice. I hope you all have your tv sets on, too!
Cissy - I have my set on! So forgive me if I type "You idiot!" instead of "Sara has the next question"
Jayne - My, a multi-national crowd tonight! Let's see: for you Canadians, my Mom was born in Canada. For those of you from Mexico, I was raised on the boarder outside of San Diego. Love both countries!
Niseé - I have heard about the Quick detective series, when do they start coming out?
Jayne - Mireya -- Borrego Springs.
SandraW - I love having a JAK frenzy, where I spend a week or two re-reading everything Jayne's ever written. Sometimes you just want to go back and re-read stuff you know you love.
Nanette - just bought all 6 reprints STEPHANIE JAMES i'm thinking of getting another job
mireya - My hubby worked there!
Cissy - Jayne, did you see Nisee's question?
Jayne - Nisee: The first book in the Quick series will be out in the Spring: SLIGHTLY SHADY. It's the start of what I hope will be a series featuring Lavinia Lake and Tobias March
misty - Jayne, I enjoy all the genres you write. I've noticed that in each group your male characters have very specific characteristics, can you talk a bit about what goes into that formulation?
diamondlegs - hey, all those guys remind me of my husband !!!
Jayne - Misty: I think characters in fiction are a lot more interesting if they have very specific characteristics (just like in real life!) When I think about them, I think in terms of "what would make him interesting".
Cissy - lucky girl, diamondlegs!
Cissy - getting ready to shout "you idiot" ...just warning people
liltxs8888 - no kidding on that note
Dionegia - Very Lucky Girl, Diamondlegs...does he have a brother?
diamondlegs - ... and yes, I do love her. I've been collecting all her books , under all her pseudonyms for years...and yes... I am lucky. he's gorgeous, smart, loves me and my kids.... and MINE !!!
Dionegia - Jayne, I'm so looking forward to your detective series--I've been hoping you'd write one since I read Dangerous. How many books do you see the new series lasting?
Jayne - Dionegia: The new series will last as long as it works for me and the readers. Always hard to predict!
Cissy - wow guys, we're officially at capacity
Dionegia - wow! :0
Jayne - Great turnout tonight! Thanks for coming.
Dionegia - Thanks Jayne!
SandraW - I think your futuristics are among my all time favorites of all the books I’ve read. And I know it all started with Crystal Flame and Sweet Starfire. What influenced you to begin writing fantasy romances in the first place?
Jayne - SandraW: I started out reading science fiction (R. Heinlein, Andre Norton, etc.) in high school. It was my first love after I graduated from horse stories and Nancy Drew. I always felt the only problem in those early SF books was that there wasn't enough romance!
SandraW - Hear, hear! I agree completely. And you did a superb job of rectifying that. Thank you.
Dionegia - Ditto for me on SF/F, Jayne!
Wendy S - Hi Jayne! You've mentioned before that you may be doing a book signing tour the beginning of next year. Any idea on when the cities will be selected?
Dionegia - And if any of the cities will be in Canada? PLease???
SandraW - A friend wants me to read Michael Moorcock. But in the two books he thrust upon me, there is a tormented hero and no happy ending anywhere. Boooooooo. LOL
diamondlegs - jayne, just promise that the dialogue between your characters will continue to be as unpredictable as always. Trying to figure out what they'll say next is half the fun. It doesn't matter if its regency, present or future !. ( just so you know, your "futuristic " books never make it down to mexico. I have to scavenge when I travel to the states, but it's worth it. If you're scehduling your travel plans...include mexico !
Jayne - Wendy: The tour cities are still being decided by the publisher. But there will be a number of them (as many as twenty) so I should get an opportunity to meet a lot of readers! REally looking forward to it. The tour schedule will go up at the web site as soon as it is nailed down.
Wendy S - Thanks Jayne!
Jayne - Bye to those who must take off. See you on the board.
muffin - My question popped up on the screen earlier --I don't know how it happened.
Cissy - Welcome to the ones just joining us!
sdc - Thank you for all the wonderful hours of reading you have givenHave you ever or would you ever consider a sequel to Sheild's Lady?
muffin - I've always wondered why authors write under different names, why do you? And how do you come up with the names?
Jayne - Muffin: Finally! I got your question. Okay, the answer about why so many pen names is complicated. Some of my early names (S. James, for instance) I had to invent because I was changing publishers and the first publisher had the rights to Jayne Castle -- which happens to be my real name). Later I used certain names (A. Quick) so that readers would know that when they picked up a book by me under a certain name they would be assured of a certain type of setting (historical, for example).
Judi - Will Fuzz or his like be featured in further curtain books? I'm a sucker for those fuzzy type friends.
Jayne - Judi: Don't worry, when I get a chance to do another in the After Dark series, Fuzz will play a major role! I love animals -- especially weird ones.
Protea - Yes, more of Fuzz!
Judi - Yahoo!!!
Cindy R - Jayne, did you ever write a book & then tear it up because it didn't gell or whatever for your high standards?
Jayne - CindyR: The only books I ever tore up were the ones that didn't sell!
Dionegia - HHmmm, maybe Jayne can make some money by marketing Fuzz dolls?
Cindy R - Okay, that answers that, LOL
sdc - Would you ever consider writting a sequel to Sheild's Lady. And if not please?
Jayne - sdc: I don't plan a sequel to Shield's Lady because I can't go back. The book was written years ago and I never look back. Sorry. But there are sequels to other books ahead!
sdc - Was just wondering about the daughter. thanks anyway Jayne love your stuff
mireya - Thank you for an personalized e-mail you sent. Love you. What is your all time favorite book?
Jayne - mireya: If you're talking about my all time favorite book of the ones I've written, the answer is: the one I'm working on now! I never reread old books. The only one I ever care about is the one I'm working on at any given time.
clair - Have just read Soft Focus, superb
Mir - jayne I loved the covers on the old Amanda Quick books and I am sooo not into half dressed people on my books ... do you have any say in this... will this be a new trend?
femmefetale007 - I've got to log off soon. just send jayne my compliments. I love her books and her heroines.
Jayne - mir:I think you'll find that the general trend is away from pictures of characters on the covers. Seems to be the way the publishing world is going. Personally, that's the way I like it because, as a reader, I prefer to come up with a look for the characters I'm reading about. But some people like to have an artist's view. A matter of taste, I guess.
Jayne - Wow, what a crowd tonight!
Dionegia - What was it like to send your first novel off to a publisher? How did you feel [and were they smart enough to buy it]?
Jayne - Dionegia: Nope, my first publisher wasn't smart enough to buy my book. In fact, it took me six very long years to sell a book! Not sure if that means the publishers were smart enough to buy me, or if I didn't write very well!
Cyndy - Jayne I love your Amanda Quick books, I've read all of them at least twice. You are the greatest
js62momusa - What is the time setting for the new book? I love the historials
Jayne - js62momusa: the time setting for the next historical is the Regency period.
Chrisann - Jayne, have you ever wrote a novel with another author, and it not, would you consider it?
Jayne - Chrisann: No, I have never written a book with another author. I can't even imagine doing it. My brain wouldn't work that way, I'm afraid. I have to tell my own stories.
Helena - dont have a ? just wanted to say Hi and tell you that I love you but I did feel like others that After Dark was not finished
Jayne - Helena: Don't worry, there will be another book in the After Dark series. Eventually!
Joelle - Jayne, your books have given me hours of enjoyment, but I find that I'm missing the heroes in your oldies.  They just seemed so much more alpha than your current ones, whom you describe as dangerous, but whose actions just make them seem cranky.  Do you have any plans to return to your bad boy heroes of the past?
Jayne - Joelle: You know, the thing about men is that one's view of them changes as one gets older. I'm getting older. What can I say? I'm more interested in some kind of intellectual connection and emotional connection between hero and heroine these days. I find I'm more interested in guys who have a bit of mileage on them and who have learned a thing or two in the past. The answer is that I'm concentrating on communication a little more than the alpha thing these days. I know that won't work for everyone.
js62momusa - Everyone has to grow up
Jayne - Orchid: Don't worry, when I get to the next After Dark book, you'll find out what happened to Lydia.
sdc - I know I'm getting older
Cissy - I like your higher mileage guys too. And when I miss the old ones, I just reread
sdc - I'm with you Cissy
JER - there seems to be less interation between your characters in your last few books, i miss getting to know the characters more i sometimes am left with the feeling of really not knowing the characters.
Jayne - JER: Dang. And here I thought they were communicating better! I do like a combination of romance and suspense so maybe that mix isn't working for you.
shy - Jayne I love your combination of romance and suspense!!!  I was wondering if you could explain why there was hesitation about whether there would be more of the After Dark series right before AD came out and why do you feel it will be a long time before you manage to write and have published more books in the series?
Dionegia - Thanks for staying late, Jayne!
Nanette - i really liked WITH THIS RING & WICKED WIDOW
Dionegia - great question, shy!
JER - THANKS JAYNE!!!!!
psg - remember in Whirlwind Courtship when he forced her to clean that fish?? i would have smacked him upside the head with that fish. i like her newer men. they wouldn't do that.
muffin - what's the alpha thing Jayne mentioned in one of her answers?
Dionegia - Same here, Cissy
Jayne - The reason there was some hesitation after AFTER DARK is because I have to fit the futuristics in between the historicals and the futuristics. A tight fit!
JER - muffin she was talking about her older heros where more alpha
Dionegia - muffin, it's like wolf classifications--the alpha male is the top male, the 'manly' man, the dominent
minerva - Thanks Jayne
Cissy - Jayne thanks so much for spending your time with us tonight. We've had a wonderful time!
Jayne - I'm going to have to say goodnight now, folks. Dinner awaits! Thank you all so much for coming tonight. I can't tell you how much I appreciate it and your support for my books.

Tell a friend!
