Stella Cameron Writer's Workshop - Negotiating the Sale 05/17/01

kamy - ty
cris - Stella you said that each royaltiy increase should go up % wise, by how many you sell, what are good numbers, such as an 8/10 split on 100 and can you climb higher with paperback
Sara - cris has the next question (Lisa in line)
cris - in other words do houses go higher than 10% on a paperback
Shirley Hailstock - hello everyone
LisaL - Hi Shirley!
StellaC - Chris. The split is higher in hardback, not paperback. And again, these percentages are never carved in stone. With Har/Sil, they have pretty hard and fast guidelines set up.
StellaC - Yes, Chris, the royalty rate can go higher than 10%
StellaC - ga
cris - thanks, Stella, I needed to know that
StellaC - You're welcome.
Sara - Lisa has the last question
LisaL - Romantic suspense - are there houses who will talk without an agent?
LisaL - Mainstream - not nec harl/sil
StellaC - Yes. I'm not suggesting this is the easiest thing to do--to approach yourself and take on all the stress which comes when you put yourself out there, but you can certainly do it without an agent.
StellaC - It's the old, annoying saw that if you have something really good, above the pack, then you have a chance to sell it with or without an agent.
LisaL - Well it's almost finished, so we'll soon see
LisaL - But John Travlota stole the title - Driven!
StellaC - The market IS really tight for many of the books so many of us know and love.
Sara - Well, that takes us to the top of the hour. Do you have some closing gems of wisedom, Stella?
Morgan - Don't worry, Lisa, Stephen King got mine!
StellaC - The good, solid historical that is a nice read but not necessarily groundbreaking, has a hard time making it into print these days.
Sara - wisdom -- sorry, spelling fingers left!
StellaC - Sorry, Sara--the mind was "Out there."
Morgan - I don't think i would wana go with Dreamcatcher now. LOL
LisaL - Thanks, morgan, back to the drawing board.
StellaC - It's corny, but don't give up. I found I couldn't, so if others are equally motivated I don't understand throwing in the towel.
LisaL - Not corny, if you can relate, and I do.
LisaL - It's always good to hear, though. Thank you, Stella!
Morgan - Tihs was really helpful, Stella. Thanks!
babydragon - Thank you Stella for all good info.

kamy - lol@Pushpen...double trouble
Sara - more on negotiating? contracts? agents?
pushpen - I wanted to finish by saying that if you are offered a contract and you think it's good--don't panic, just find other writers who have trodden the road (although a lawyer is always nice.)

pushpen - It'll make the contest even more fun, I promise.
LisaL - Ooo, I can be very evil - just ask my husband!!
Sara - want to tell me know? or later?
pushpen - And you can do it, Morgan and Sara.
LynnF - Stella doesn't think I can do it.... lol
Lynn has timed out.

pushpen - Oh, that's funny, Lisa!
Morgan - Gee, Thanks...like the LAST one was? LOL>
LynnF -
pushpen - Now why would you ever think I could get trashy?
pushpen - The last (and first) contest was merely a warm-up exercise.
