Paranormal Romance Chat - 05/15/01

Cissy - right, Terri -- and that's why I agree with you that "Paranormal" should be the big umbrella. It's the most generic of all the sub-genre names
dolll - LOL Then most romances could be considered paranormal! Because they certainly aren't ordinary
Cissy - Hi Barb!
Flash - Can we say DRAG! LOL
kitkat - I think the word ParaNormal has been skewed by such Movies as Ghostbusters, don't you think? Obviously paranormal includes only ghosts! Right? *tongue in cheek*
CYoTE - Ok, those are PNR's catagories for PEARL and their definitions... left out short story and time travel, but don't think they needed definition.
CarpathianCaro - In a paranormal romance, you never know what is going to happen.
BarbSheridan - Hi Cissy & everyone
Theresa - Okay--for all you published authors. After the recent sucess of many paranormal series.. Have you noticed if the publishers are more interested in paranormal romances?
Flash - Hye Barb!
KarenWhite - I think according to RWA's Ritas--paranormal is basically any book that doesn't fit into the other categories!
Flash - hey, that is
darkone - I believe they are, although you still have to work to convince distributors
TerriBrisbin - Theresa -- I think that the few publishers who publish paranormals continue to and the rest ignore them!
Navy - In any romance you never know what is going to happen
TerriBrisbin - (in print publishers, that is!)
darkone - Terri,it is getting a bit better, really
kitkat - But also, think about it, with the reprints of some SSh through the Dreamscapes line, it's coming back in popularity.
KarenWhite - Terri--I think you're right. I don't see other houses starting new paranormal lines at all.
dolll - But there sure seem to be a lot of vampire books out now--there must be more than a few publishers who will take them
darkone - I've been approached by several houses who would never have looked a paranormal and they've wanted one
AnnLawrence - OED definition: paranormal is pertaining to or involving phenonemna or powers who operation is outside the scope of the known laws of nature or normal objective investigation. So my son is paranormal because he can live in a room that is beyond the laws of naturen
Cissy - even some of the really big names have trouble putting out paranormals. JAK's print-runs for her futuristic books are way lower than for her "normal" stuff
CYoTE - No, I think the reprints of SSh is in response to upswing in popularity... and they are only doing reprints because they doubt it will last????
Cissy - lol, Ann
BarbSheridan - reprints probably becuase it saves them $$
kitkat - but then again, what is the QUALITY of the paranormal stuff out there, some I'm sure is pretty weak, and some is outstanding, they have to be seleective
Flash - LOL Ann! Now define normal! LOL
TerriBrisbin - Cy -- they are not accepting submissions for new ones for SShadows...
CarpathianCaro - I have a question here for everyone present. What would you prefer to read? A vampire romance or a contemporary romance?
AnnLawrence - I do think that a publisher will buy a book they like and then label how they want to sell it...
KarenWhite - But Cris--they're interested in your Name, your legions of fans and the guaranteed sales you'll bring in. I don't think it's paranormal they're interested in. If you were as successful writing books about the problem of illiteracy amongst soybean farms in southeast asia, then they'd want to buy those, too.
Theresa - For the past few years, we kept hearing that publishers weren't interested in paranormal romances. But with the huge sucess of many of the paranormalk authors, not to mention several publishing houses starting up that are completely devoted to paranormal romances, I keep hoping the major house will WAKE UP.
AnnLawrence - Normal is ...well...not me
kitkat - but then again Cy, it could be the "start of somehting beautiful"
darkone - the distributors have a lot to do with it, some will not take paranormals particularly vampire
BarbSheridan - how about a contemporary vampire romance?
Cissy - don't make me choose, Caro!!
dolll - VAMPIRE! Definately
Flash - Anything with a vampire in is grabs my attention! LOL
darkone - so the print runs are smaller
kitkat - Cy, by the way, thank book isle for the Margaret St. George book, Love Bites, got it very quickly
Flash - ROTFLMAO WEll then, who is?
KarenWhite - Caro--it depends on my mood. Last week it was contemporary romance. This week it's regencies. Next week it will be gothic and the Scarletti Curse. I'm a woman of changing tastes...
CarpathianCaro - Oh, I am not alone. We have vampire lovers here tonight. I would read a contemporary vampire romance. Anything with a vampire is alright with me.
Flash - KAt, that oine was a good read! I enjoyed it!
lenoushka - Hate vampires but would love a contemporary ghost,or reincarnation romancer
AnnLawrence - I know some writers "hide" a mild paranormal element when writing their proposals and then jsut put it in the finished book so the editors dont' get too hyper
darkone - kisses to you Karen, I hope you enjoy it
vadra has timed out.
Flash - Lenouska, how about a greek god or mythical creature?
CYoTE - I do all the mailing for Book Isle, so I will take a bow and compliment whenever I can get it!
dolll - I'll read a vampire book before any oother ones
kitkat - And you know something, if the pubs can't sell the paranormal element, can't they sell at least a plot device or two that will get the mainstream attention.
CarpathianCaro - Me, too. I have such a weakness for vampire romances.
TerriBrisbin - Love Bites was wonderful -- I enjoyed that!
lenoushka - Ann, does that mean we have to be extra careful with the synopsis?
KarenWhite - Cris--of course I'll love it. One million fans can't be wrong, right? And I think I met most of them at CR2001.... <g>
Cissy - no, they can't swing a paranormal element or two; they're too busy stuffing cowboys and babies down our throats
dolll - ImaJinn seems to be doing all rig
kitkat - For instance, regarding Love Bites, the afore mentioned book isle book. I opened it up, thinking it a vamp book, and see that the hero suffered from the same eye disease my husband has
Flash - Like most movies TV or otherwise with a paranormal element, Kat! They try and sell the mystery or the romance sometimes.
Cissy - Hey, how about a vampire cowboy with a psychic baby!
Theresa - Well, I have to admit that I read everything. My preference is for contemps with paranormal elements.
lenoushka - Greek gods are always fine!!!
TerriBrisbin - Cissy -- and too busy cutting print runs of paranormals..
KarenWhite - lenoushka--It would depend on the house you're marketing it to. For Dorchester, you'd want to highlight the paranormal elements. For, say, Bantam, I'd bury them.
Flash - ROTFLMAO Cissy!
darkone - I read everything to Theresa
Cissy - Yep, Terri
candyyy - would someone be willing to email me a list of vampire romance, read a few but I have a hard time finding them
KarenWhite - Cissy--LOL!!
dolll - Cissy==I'd read that one! LOL
TerriBrisbin - Kitkat -- it is a vampire story!
kitkat - of course, he was a vamp because he didn't want to go blind, but that in and of itself was a psychic occurrence form me
AnnLawrence - Yes, lenoushka. ONe very BIG writer told me an editor is not reading a proposal to look for a reason to buy it, but to reject it because they have so many to choose from
CYoTE - OK, so there have been in Harlequin American some PNR books... Love Bites/ their MORE THAN MEN series... DADDY WARLOCK
CarpathianCaro - I have all of Madeline Baker's Indian romances. Absolutely loved them. I moved on to gunslingers, Vikings, sheiks, knights and now paranormal romances. I've read just about everything.
Flash - And that is scarry Ann!
kitkat - candyyy, try midnight reviews from carol castellanos on simigen.com, she has over 360 vamp books listed on her personal site
candyyy - thanks
AnnLawrence - Yes, Flash. IT is scary for the midlist writer
Theresa - SIM's have had several psychic books as well. But it seems like the catagories aren't willing to explore much beyond the psychic level.
CarpathianCaro - I hightly recommend Midnight Enchantment by Nancy Gideon. Definitely a KEEPER!!!
TerriBrisbin - Cy -- I think they/Harl. decide to put together a series and invite authors to participate --
kitkat - but, SIM did print the Brides of the Night, a two-fer with vamp leads
Ginger has timed out.
TerriBrisbin - that's how their More Than Men happened
AnnLawrence - I want to say one of my first books that really told me I LOVED to read was "Have Spacesuit Will Travel" I think it was Heinlen and I've been hooked on anything out of the ordingary ever since.
CYoTE - I admit to liking an occasional vampire, but I could not be a Vamp lover to Carol's etent... sorry, too many good men out there to read about Like Aphrodite's Kiss... even good women
CarpathianCaro - I have that, Kitkat.
Flash - Or the loveswept tresured tales too!
dolll - So what makes a publilsher pick out one paranormal and turn another one down?
BarbSheridan - Quite a few Harl Intrigues had PNR in them, mostly TT (th e ones I read anyway)
Cissy - Loveswept did a great job at trying new directions
kitkat - my starter book, Dune, got me interested in out of the ordinary, unless you count the ghostly ones in the Trixie Belden series
jcwilder - I loved Trixi Beldon
CYoTE - YES, the treasured tales... most were actually not PNR at all, just plot like a fairy tale
Theresa - So how would you guys characterize say Kay Hoopers Shadows series, or Linda Howards Dream Man, Now you see Her? Paranormals or Romantic Suspence?
Flash - I miss Loveswept! THey seemed to wht to take chances!
Cissy - publishers with less to lose maybe? Kind of the FOX/X-Files thing
TerriBrisbin - Barb -- di you ever notice that's it Harl/Sil established authors who get to do the paranormals?
candyyy - thanks everyone night
KarenWhite - My first exposure to paranormal books were time travels (Time at the Top). My 9-year-old daughter is currently reading A WRINKLE IN TIME--just a chip off the old block!
darkone - I still have the entire Trixie Belden set
lenoushka - Barb, you're right. Several Rebecca York books have paranormal elements--even a vampire. One of the few vampire books I read.
kitkat - I think what we really need to do is develop a love of the paranormal romance from the YA fiction on, but with much less sensuality and sex of course
dolll - Shows like X Files on tv are really big so why aren't the books with that theme?
Cissy - I'd say the fit under the paranormal umbrella which can also fit under the contemp/rom/susp umbrella
Theresa - And are these kind of romantic suspence contemporaries with paranormal aspects easier to find publishers for than say Paranormals that have much more Paranormal plots?
Flash - Trye Cyote, but in some of thoise stories, there was a lot of paranormal action going on! Then they came out wiht a more then Men themselves, and had things likt the spiderman or the blind psycic that talked to ghosts
kitkat - Buffy and Angel do well for on tv and movies, but we really need to develop a line like that specifically aimed at YA Girls
BarbSheridan - There is a lot of YA paranormal fiction out there the last time I took my daughter to the bookstore...
KarenWhite - Theresa--I think so. Paranormal aspects are a lot easier to disguise in a back cover blurb than a paranormal character or plot.
TerriBrisbin - Dolll -- the bottom line is money -- if a publisher thinks it will be a 'seller', they'll publish it.
Flash - Liek teh goosebumps, Kat, only wiht romance?
kitkat - YA fiction or YA paranormal ROmance?
Flash - excuse my typing! LOL
AnnLawrence - Hey...I'm writing a ya romance/shape-shifter thing for my daughter...I gave it to lots of kids this week and they all liked it...now if I can sell it
Sara - hi, I made the tail end!!
lenoushka - Trixie Belden started me on the road to mystery and suspense. I loved her and was annoyed with my parents because we didn't live in a rural area with a mansion next door.
Flash - Both, Hon! I even found a YA about a gay teenaged single father!
TerriBrisbin - Hi Sara!
KarenWhite - Ann--go for it! You could be a real trend-setter.
BarbSheridan - a bt of both kitkat
kitkat - flash, you got it, but can't be goosebumps level, too young, maybe sweet valley high meets buffy/the x files
Cissy - we've been having a great chat, Sara! (once we could finally chat!!)
denise - logged on. - 5/15 at 10:00pm EST
AnnLawrence - I, too, was mansion deprived
Flash - LOL KAt! That sounds about right! LOL
dolll - I've never seen a YA publisher that will take paranormals
KarenWhite - Let's not overlook the amazing popularity of Harry Potter amongst the Y
kitkat - ann, were'nt we all Mansion Deprived
KarenWhite - YA crowd.
KarenWhite - YA crowd.
Flash - hey Denise!
Sara - dolll you are looking in the wrong place then. My daughter has read paranormal since 6th grade
elizajane - logged on - 5/15 at 10:02pm EST
kitkat - Karen, you got it right, and if a pub could take Harry Potter on, why couldn't they take on Harry Potter gets a girlfriend? LOL
Flash - hey Kat! I can dream! ROTFLMAO
Sara - LJ Smith is into her 20 printings of books
Theresa - Do you guys consider futuristics beneath the paranormal envelope?
AnnLawrence - But harry is not handsome and date material to the girls my daughter's age
denise - hey. just gettin up to speed
lenoushka - I don't have kids. So where does stuff like Animorphs fit in?
dolll - LOL Kaqt!
Flash - HECK NO! LOL Futuristics are near and dear to my heart!
Sara - Igot so tired of hearing of the Night World!!!
TerriBrisbin - Theresa -- I do --
KarenWhite - kitkat--I agree! I think there's this burgeoning market that we should be taking advantage of now.
kitkat - I consider a futuristic a paranormal romance
AnnLawrence - I do Theresa
Navy - depends on how future it is
elizajane - hi ya'll
Sara - no, Ann, they want the people that Applegate and LJ Smith write about
kitkat - it's like a reverse time travel, with a touch of the sci fi
Cissy - I think they fall under the paranormal umbrella, Theresa
CYoTE - Now, FUTURISTICS are my FIRST choice in PNR... then those with psycic link between H/H... now if you combine both... Spangler's book coming in September does this... I am in love!!!
darkone - I elizajane
Flash - Hey Elizajean!
kitkat - hi elizajane, welcome!
Navy - I like the reverse travel bit
darkone - I love Cathy Spangler!!!
Flash - Excuse my spelling! LOL
KarenWhite - Sorry to be a party pooper, but I've got to run. It's been fun, ladies! G'night...
denise - - 5/15 at 10:04pm EST
CYoTE - I think the difference between futuristic and sci-fi is the world building and focus is more on romance in futuristic
TerriBrisbin - bye Karen
Flash - Night Karen!
kitkat - I feel a Doctor Who meets the Highlander coming on here!
dolll - Bye Karen
BarbSheridan - 'night Karen
CYoTE - Bye Karen. Appreciated your comments. Gave room for thought
Cissy - Night, Karen - come back soon
Theresa - What do you mean by world building cyote?
kitkat - good night karen, nice to talk to you tonight, glad you didn't kill cris on the road that day! LOL
Flash - No! kat! Stop! LOL
AnnLawrence - Bye, Karen
darkone - nite karen
Theresa - night Karen
darkone - it wasn't for lack of trying!!!
CYoTE - AUTHORS... HELP... Explain world building.
kitkat - Cris, LOL
lenoushka - bye, Karen
kitkat - Cy, if you want a readers perspective on world building here goes...
lenoushka - World building? Making up your own universe???
TerriBrisbin - CY--LOL! World building is creating thetime and place of your story, especially when it is outside of the real world
AnnLawrence - World building...to me it is setting the stage for the suspension of believe. Putting the reader into the book's realm, world, time period.
Flash - IMHO, I guess teh emphasis would be on creating this new world and the people and things that make it futuristic , ie cars that fly and robotic aliend for interplanitary tribes!
Navy - If Im not mystaken building is the setting and tone
kitkat - World building in my opinion is when you develop the ruling structure, the interactions between the individuals in that world and the emphasis on the creation of a believable hypothesis
kitkat - In the romance genre, i would think it is more concentrated on the individual interactions within the hero/.heroines circle of influence
CYoTE - In futuristic & Sci-fi, author "builds" a fantasy world. Sci-fi gives more technical aspects and details of the world where futuristics leave more to imagination/public understanding. That is why many futuristics seem to be historical romances set in space.
Flash - still keeping in mind that you have to make your stroy line fit in wiht the surroundings that you created
kitkat - in the sci-fi genre, the circle of influence is greater and the scientific emphasis cannot be remobed from the book
TerriBrisbin - World building occurs in any story - in a paranormal, you have fewer restrictions than say in a historical
darkone - my little one is staying with us tonight, little skyler rose and she is no longer happy with me. she wants attention now, so good nite, fun chat
TerriBrisbin - where history exists as a guide
CarpathianCaro - Have to get to bed. I am getting really tired. Hope everyone has a good night.
darkone - I'll catch you all later
Flash - and you can be more creative wiht your characters! Purple and green eyes woiht six legs and four arms! LOL
kitkat - Well, think about the Carpathian World. It is SOOO believable, unlike some Star Trek plots, etc etc
Theresa - night cris I'm patiently waiting for Darius...but it's getting lonely...
Flash - Night Chris and Caro!
kitkat - Good night Christine, and Congrats again, way to go
lenoushka - Terri, I agree. But don't you have to follow th rules you created in your new universe? You can't just change them for expediency in yur story, right? o
darkone - thanks Kat,
darkone - nite all
AnnLawrence - Good night!
darkone - - 5/15 at 10:10pm EST
CarpathianCaro - Good night everyone. Sweet dreams of Darius!
Navy - Good night
Navy - - 5/15 at 10:11pm EST
Theresa - nite caro
kitkat - by the way, did anyone mention that it is Christines birthday today?
TerriBrisbin - Lenoushka -- you're correct -- that's why world building is so important -- there has to be a certain consistency within the world created for the story or readers lose their belief in it!
CarpathianCaro - - 5/15 at 10:11pm EST
Flash - LOL Night Lady!
AnnLawrence - Yes, you have to follow the rules...that said...I hope I can remember my rules
sueM - Good night all--thanks for a good first chat!
CYoTE - Well, before all authors leave, I would like to thank them for coming tonight to chat.
Flash - Night Sue!
sueM - - 5/15 at 10:11pm EST
Theresa - I've got a tecnical question for all you authors left.
TerriBrisbin - When do we finish this chat?
Sara - yes, thank you for coming. I will have to read the transcript.
BarbSheridan - Ask away Theresa
lenoushka - Ladies, this was great. Good night.
Sara - the chat is scheduled for one hour, Terri
CYoTE - Although things got off to a gremlin fraught start, it has been enjoyable and for us who are "night owls" we will continue enjoying the chat
Sara - I came in the end, but I have been buzzed that it was a great chat!!
lenoushka - - 5/15 at 10:12pm EST
Theresa - Do you still underline to show italics in a manuscript? or with the wonderful advent of computers can you just use italics now to show italics?>
Cissy - thanks everyone who came -- anyone who wants to is free to stay and hang out, of course
TerriBrisbin - So, I get at least 15 more minutes since I was 30 minutes late? LOL
AnnLawrence - I underline. It's a signal to the typesetter
Flash - LOL That lets me out! LOL
elizajane has timed out.
Theresa - Okay ann thanks.
TerriBrisbin - Theresa -- I underline too since that's still 'manuscript format'
BarbSheridan - Print pubs want underlining e-pubs italics
CYoTE - Hey, my recorded copy of DARK ANGEL isn't going anywhere... and I took a nap with grandson today... advantage of babysitting
kitkat - Good night all, got to check email and beddy bye
KarenWhite has timed out.
Theresa - That's what I was wondering--if it was still considered manuscript format...
TerriBrisbin - I have never asked my editor -- I just do it that way...
jcwilder - I'm off to bed kids, just me and my vampires.
Theresa - okay you guys thanks for all the help.
Flash - Night Hon! I have to run too!
vadra - logged on - 5/15 at 10:15pm EST
kitkat - Cy once again thanks for the book, you are fab.
Cissy - bye jc -- thanks for coming!
Flash - Night ladies! This, what I caught, was a good one! LOL
Flash - - 5/15 at 10:15pm EST
TerriBrisbin - I need to run, too.... thanks for inviting me tonight!
jcwilder - - 5/15 at 10:15pm EST

Cissy - night, Terri - come back soon
Theresa - got to run too
BarbSheridan - you're welcome Theresa
AnnLawrence - It was very nice to be able to attend. I really had fun at CR01 and enjoyed re-meeting some of you
TerriBrisbin - It was nice to see everyone -- bye!
TerriBrisbin - - 5/15 at 10:17pm EST
AnnLawrence - Keep reading paranormals, no matter what sub-genre and good night!
dolll - I have to leave too. Thanks to all of you for a great chat
Susanna - - 5/15 at 10:17pm EST
Susanna - Hi everyone! Looks like I'm late as usual!
kitkat - - 5/15 at 10:18pm EST
