Cissy - okay, so are we defining "Paranormal Romance" tonight? And who wants to give it a shot?
Go on to Part 2
PattiL - Hi
cris - hi Ann! how are you?
cris - you know I love that Darius
CYoTE - are we all back yet?
Theresa - Hi patti
PattiL -

AnnLawrence - logged on - 5/15 at 9:12pm EST
cris - and Caro, I just received the artwork for Dark Legend and you're going to love it
Ginger - Where is Kitkat when we need her she could give us the definition
PattiL -
Ginger I am the Nice Twin
Cissy - welcome back, Ann!
Ginger - WB Ann
CarpathianCaro - Me, too, Cris. I can HARDLY wait to read his book. Dark Legend? OH COME ON AND QUIT TEASING ME!!
Ginger - Yeah right Sis
KarenWhite - Cris! Just be thankful you don't have Expedition marks all over your back...
jcwilder - Okay - i want to play with the icons too...
CYoTE - So, are you ready to share what YOU consider PARANORMAL?
cris - ROFLLL
Theresa -
caro--ditto for me.
KarenWhite - I think Cris wants to define paranormal. Go ahead, dear...
Cissy - maybe we can get all of our authors to take a whack at defining the genre and then take some questions?
lgd - logged on. - 5/15 at 9:14pm EST
cris - I'll take a shot at it
KarenWhite - The cover for DARK FIRE is stunning!
AnnLawrence - ARe we back?
cris - for me, it is beyond the ordinary, something extra so when I pick up a paranormal I know I'm going to be surprised
Cissy - we're back, Ann
lgd - hi room
KarenWhite - Just to add on to what Cris said--I think it's anything "other-worldly"--that which doesn't exist in the reality of our everyday lives.
dawnie -
- 5/15 at 9:16pm EST
CYoTE - OK, so any author volunteers? Give idea of PARANORMAL' s definition please

jcwilder - You mean vampires aren't real? (blink)
dawnie -
- 5/15 at 9:17pm EST
AnnLawrence - Can anyone see me?
KarenWhite - OK, JC--make that "admitted" reality. <g>
cris - I thought they were too JC, where am I getting all that info?
KarenWhite - Ann--I see you. And you're wearing a lovely shade of green.
CYoTE - I cannot say PARANORMAL is not real... I consider ESP as a paranormal element. Maybe extraordinary?
jcwilder - I see you Ann - you're wearing a green shirt.
AnnLawrence -
- 5/15 at 9:18pm EST
Ginger - Ann Can you see us?
cris - waving at you Ann
CarpathianCaro - Don't most of us want to read about love lasting throughout eternity? I think that is why vampires and anything paranormal are so popular.
AnnLawrence - logged on - 5/15 at 9:18pm EST
Ginger - How about anything not easily explained by scientic methods?
KarenWhite - Red is *supposed* to be my signature color but I see that's not the case. <sniff> I'll be right back--I need to change my shirt...
Ginger - WB Ann
CYoTE - Ah, more paranormal events during paranormal discussion... the gremlins are here!
KarenWhite -
- 5/15 at 9:19pm EST
Cissy - I'm always surprised at how people tend to limit the term "paranormal" -- as if it's only vampires or ghosts, without including, esp, time travel, visions, etc., etc.,
Niteowl has timed out.
lenoushka - hi i'm new is this how you join the chat? ?? for Ann L where did you get the ide for your computer game seroeies? are you a computer geek?
Ginger - I like ready about couples that can read each others minds
AnnLawrence - Ahhh 3rd times the charm...I'm back in finally!!
cris - beyond the ordinary, not necessarily not true
KarenWhite - logged on - 5/15 at 9:19pm EST
Cissy - Yea, Ann!!
KarenWhite - There--new shirt.
KarenWhite - Oh, wait. Cissy's wearing indigo, too. Yeesh...
Ginger - oops reading
not ready
Cissy - welcome lenoushka - you've come to the right place. We're talking about how we define "paranormal romance" tonight (among other things)
cris - even gothic can be paranormal with just creepiness
jcwilder - I'm with you - why are vampires and ghost books with the "occult" books in the bookstore?
CYoTE - So, Ann, since you are an author and are presently experiencing some "extraordiary" events here ... what do you consider PARANORMAL? And how is it different from fantasy?
Cissy - lol, Karen - it's okay, we both carry it off
TerriBrisbin - logged on. - 5/15 at 9:20pm EST
cris - but you look cute in indigo Karen
PattiL - I thought you were speaking teenage Ginger, I am like read for .....
TerriBrisbin - Hello -- sorry to be late --
AnnLawrence - I define para normal as anything that asks the reader to consider beyond their everyday experiences...
Cissy - Hi Terri!!
Ginger - LOL Patti
Ginger - HI Terri
Cissy - so Julie Kenner's "superpowers" book would count, right?
cris - I like that Ann
AnnLawrence - so that's pretty wide open.
Ginger - Oooh good one Ann
PattiL - Hi Terri
KarenWhite - Paranormal vs. fantasy--that's a good topic, CY. To me, fantasy is like fairy tales--something beyond the realm of reality. But Paranormal may be outside our everyday existence, but they have a ring of believability about them.
Ginger - Oh yes I think so
CYoTE - Hi Terri! Guess what you got volunteered for since you were late [evil grin]
AnnLawrence - For me yes
cris - well certainly, it's magical isn't it?
TerriBrisbin - Cy -- what did I miss?
KarenWhite - Thanks, Cris. But I only changed into indigo because you're wearing _my_ red. Make sure you clear your RWA awards gown with me first, okay?
AnnLawrence - My experiences here have been pretty paranormal so far
KarenWhite - I'll sew the bombs, um, tassles if you'd like.
cris - LOL!

lenoushka - paranormal is such a large area, there ae subgenres within the subgenre, don't you think. For instance, I love ghost stories but get out the garlic at hthe hint of avampire.g

AnnLawrence - I just got bumped off again, sorry for the hickup
jcwilder - Neither is mine but I'm lovin' these icons.
Cissy - I think we all did, Ann.
CYoTE - logged on - 5/15 at 9:28pm EST
Ginger - LOL Good time to bring it up Cissy
SueM has timed out.
Flash - SO I am not the only one with issues!
Cissy - now where were we?
TerriBrisbin - logged on. - 5/15 at 9:28pm EST
AnnLawrence - IT takes me awhile to catch on
Flash - So, what did I miss?
TerriBrisbin - Am I back? Did I travel through time? LOL
Navy - logged on - 5/15 at 9:29pm EST
CYoTE - Gremlins are busy tonight... talk about paranormal has them excited... well, let's see... sub-catagories...
dolll - Do you think a book can be both paranormal and fantasy?
darkone - logged on - 5/15 at 9:29pm EST
Cissy - definite cyber-ghoulies
tonight!
Cissy - good question, dolll!
Flash - YES!
darkone - That blasted Karen bombed me right off the net!
TerriBrisbin - I think that a fantasy is a paranormal -- I think pararnormal is the bigger category and fantasy part of it.
AnnLawrence - I think so...does anyone know if that's what I'm writing? I sometimes get called time-travel fantasy or just straight fantasy, sometimes sci-fi/fantasy.
Flash - Who has teh gremlin repelant? LOL
lenoushka - wouldn't a fantasy (fairies, ect) hae to be a paranormal? What good is afairy or wizard without some other-worldly powers?
CYoTE - Ok -- so we agree that paranormal is "unusual" and there are sub catagories... how do your publishers think of this?
AnnLawrence - I agree, lenoushka
jcwilder - I don't define paranormal as fairies - I think of them as more of a fantasy.
Navy - I prefer to label it Time Travel
darkone - I agree, Terri that fantasy has to be included in paranormal
dolll - I'm writing about dragons and witches--so what catagory would that one fall into?
Cissy - so does that mean that fairy/fantasy stories *aren't* paranormals?
jcwilder - To me, paranormal is darker - like vamps and ghosts etc.
AnnLawrence - Karen? How does our publisher view this?
TerriBrisbin - I like the way the FF&P chapter breaks it up -- dark fantasy, light fantasy, time travel, futuristic -- all with paranormals
Cissy - oops, yes I agree with Terri too. I'm *definitely* not an expert on the subject like some of you are, but I think of "paranormal" as the really big umbrella that includes fantasy
CYoTE - Since we are on a PNR chat... how do you feel about the sub-catagories we have listed... any you think need added?
KarenWhite has timed out.
AnnLawrence - Now JC...the fairies in my backyard are not a fantasy
Theresa - So you're saying that Paranormal is the category and fantasy, time-travel, vampires, ect are all sub-genres within the paranormal?
TerriBrisbin - CY--some publishers don't recognize paranormal at all!
cris has timed out.
Flash - JC, what about the dark feries of the farie realm? How would you describe them?
lenoushka - I agree with Terri. It's unfair to match apples ith oranges or fairies with vampires.
jcwilder - Ann - LOL!
TerriBrisbin - Flash -- I'll call those dark fantasy
CarpathianCaro - I agree with JC. A paranormal romance has to have a dark element. It has to have that menace and danger.
Navy - One of the best book I have read was Time travel.
CYoTE - yes, Theresa, that is the general idea... although we agree that "straight" romances can have paranormal elements, PNR books are "based" on the paranormal.
Cissy - so what *would* the big umbrella be?
darkone - the interesting thing is, in the beginning if I mentioned paranormal an editor didn't want to read it, now they ask for my trademark paranormal
jcwilder - To me, a paranormal has a dark element so if the dark fairies have that element then they are paranormal.
KarenWhite - logged on - 5/15 at 9:34pm EST
Flash - Dark fantasies, but what if they possess some of the qualities that traditionalyy classify a character as paranormal?
TerriBrisbin - IMHO -- paranormal is the big umbrella
Flash - Cool! I got it JC!
darkone - it was your bomb Karen!
KarenWhite - Navy--which one?
dolll - So anything that is magick or "un"real could be considered paranormal?
AnnLawrence - I agree like mystery. It has tons of sub-genres
vadra - logged on - 5/15 at 9:36pm EST
Navy - The Last Viking
vadra - hi all
KarenWhite - Do you mean I killed Cris???? Oops. Gee, one less competitor for the Rita's...
lenoushka - paranormals don't have to be dark. one of the est books I ever read was devereau's Knight in Shining Armor--hardly dark.
Theresa - okay--then what about this. What about this what about suspence that have a very light element of paranormal--say like in the catagories that will use psychics? Would anyone consider these paranormals? Or romantic suspence with paranormal elements?
Flash - Hey Vandra!
KarenWhite - Navy--is that Sandra Hill? I haven't read that one yet.
Cissy - lmao, Karen
CYoTE - I agree, that you need the sub catagories... not all PNR is DARK... and I wouldn't want it to be... that would be like confining "straight" romance to just contemporary... it won't work.
darkone - you tried Karen but I resurrected!
kitkat - logged on - 5/15 at 9:37pm EST
Navy - Yes, and I would have to list it as my favorite
kitkat - Hey, Thought I'd stop by for a minute
Flash - Hey Kat!
vadra - hi flash!
kitkat - steph!!!!!! Hello there! How are you?
CarpathianCaro -
Hi Kitkat.
KarenWhite - Oh, phooey. I meant, great, Cris! So glad you found your way back. Can I get you something to drink? A little arsenic, perhaps?
AnnLawrence - Hi Kitkat
Flash -
Cissy - How does PNR categorize for PEARL awards? And does something like that by its nature begin shaping how we define the sub-genres?
KarenWhite - Cissy--what does imao mean??
kitkat - ann, howdy, there, cris, congrats on the new gothic!
darkone - I've found that they start out saying they don't print them but the more successful we are as authors the more others are going to have a chance because they're asking for themnow, Terri
KarenWhite - Oh, wait--I'm being daft. that was LMAO. Just pretend I'm not here...
CYoTE - romantic suspence with paranormal elements... well, since those who like PNR would also like this, most consider it PNR but sell it to publishers as straight... am I getting the right perspective on this authors?
Flash - Tired, Hon! THere were several Paranormal type people at the funeral! LOL
CarpathianCaro - LOL Karen.
TerriBrisbin - PNR seems to mixup all the various types
AnnLawrence - I always have trouble with contests I enter on my own. I am always wondering what I am
Cissy - it means I'm not good at capitalizing, Karen
TerriBrisbin - some books were nominated in several categories
darkone - yes and some sneak in right Karen???
kitkat - well, as far as paranormals are concerned, I don't care what category, just print the darned things!
AnnLawrence - I think they're nominated in several categories because readers don't define it so strictly.
CYoTE - PNR Category definitions

lenoushka - as an unpub'd I say who cares what they call it as long as the publish it <VVVBG>
kitkat - Oh, by the way, paranormal author Maggie Shayne, she has Twilight Hunger coming out from Mira in March 02
CYoTE - Other Paranormal Stories with Reincarnation, ESP, Psychic ability and other paranormal elements
dolll - Does anyone have a dictionary with the word paranormal in it? Mine doesn't. It is even a word???
CYoTE - Fantasy/ Magical Story takes place in the natural world but featuring beings [mythical or real] with unnatural abilities.
CarpathianCaro - Paranormal romances are my favorite. I love that aura of menace and danger. Give me a book with a vampire in it, and I'm happy.
CYoTE - Shape shifters Books in this category include beings that have the ability to take on different forms one of which must be human. includes VAMPIRES
TerriBrisbin - Dolll para-normal means outside of normal
CarpathianCaro - I think paranormal means something out of the ordinary.
CYoTE - Futuristic Books in this category have main plot in future setting. Story line takes place far enough in the future for there to be significant developments (changes) in culture
BarbSheridan - logged on - 5/15 at 9:43pm EST
darkone - I like all aspects of the paranormal because I know something is going to be different about it and I can't wait to see where the writer's imagination takes me
CYoTE - Sci-fi Books in this category have science fiction plot with strong romance features.
KarenWhite - Cris--yep. As my theme song goes, "Even the losers get lucky sometimes." <g>
Flash - Which is a pretty wide open feild if you look at it!
