Celebrations

thefinalcutI am a big proponent of celebrating life’s events, big and small.  And I’m perhaps a bit contrary in my methods. I like holidays to be celebrated at the appropriate time of the year. None of this Halloween crap in July, thank you very much. I celebrate birthdays on the ACTUAL day, though I have been known to spend the week leading into a birthday making merry. As for my wedding anniversary – forget about it – it’s fine wine and swanky dining all the way.

To be honest, I look for any excuse to celebrate. Chocolate after a particularly good chapter, a new book when I finish a draft, shoes, just because. (Hey, I’m a girl. We’re all supposed to do things just because.) I’m a big fan of massages and facials, which I treat myself to sparingly, so they really do feel like rewards.

And when I have a book release, I like to throw myself a little party. Nothing obscene, just a little champagne, a few cuddles with the book, some selfies at the bookstore.
But I’ve never had a release as big and crazy as the one for THE FINAL CUT. It’s the first in a new series called A Brit in the FBI – co-written with the incredible Catherine Coulter. And if you know anything about Catherine, you know she doesn’t do anything halfway. We have created a new James Bond – Nicholas Drummond, a DCI with New Scotland Yard who comes to New York to work with the FBI on the biggest case of his career.

So much has been going on I can hardly keep track (mostly because I’m trying to do revisions for another book, WHEN SHADOWS FALL, my new Samantha Owens novel, which comes out in February.) It’s Friday the 13th today, and the book releases on Tuesday, the 17th, and I’m up to my ear in lists. My office looks like a tornado has blown through, there are boxes of books in the corners, envelopes trailing out of the closet, my to do list is smudged with fingerprints from trying frantically to scratch everything off, and I’ve forgotten my cup of tea in the microwave three times.

It’s two weeks of sheer chaos, which is okay, because I know shortly, I’ll be able to put everything to rights and go back to my quiet, introspective little world.

THE FINAL CUT has the most fun, most exciting, biggest release celebration ever! We’re giving away a diamond! The fine folks at Adler’s Jewelers in New Orleans donated a spectacular halo diamond necklace to help us celebrate THE FINAL CUT’s release.

How’d we cook this up? The story revolves around the Koh-i-Noor diamond being stolen from the Queen Mother’s crown, and Catherine had the brilliant idea that we should give away a diamond to celebrate. (I like how this girl thinks.) So you can enter right here: http://penguin.com/finalcutsweepstakes and good luck to you!

After the celebrations, the toasts and joyousness and relief, comes the inevitable letting go, finding one’s center again, and marking the calendar for the next bit of excitement. It’s how we live out lives, these strange ups and down, waxing and waning. In my world, the boxes disappear, the envelopes are all mailed, the tea is found and consumed. Life goes back to normal, for a little while, at least.

I’m so glad you are on this journey with me. Thank you for all your support. Now get out there and pre-order THE FINAL CUT, so we can celebrate together on Tuesday!
