Luck vs Love
My latest book is called LUCK BE A LADY so you’d think it would be full of good luck items and not a black cat. But my heroine Megan is all about breaking stereotypes. The highly-coveted starred Booklist review for my book talks about that. Megan is a retro-loving librarian who has her life turned upside down when brash Chicago cop Logan Doyle crashes her cousin’s Vegas wedding.
Logan’s arrival sends Megan on a whirlwind tour across Nevada with Logan in a vintage 1957 Chevy Bel Air. But once Logan and Megan return to their hometown of Chicago things really heat up.
The first thing Megan does when she gets to her condo is to talk to her black cat Smudge. I got the inspiration for Smudge from a kitten that I rescued several years ago and fostered until my friend Suzette took her in and adopted her. The photo is of that black cat I rescued whose real name is Sweetie Fabulous -- she was a model in a previous life J. Readers online at my Facebook page helped me come up with the name Smudge for the cat in my book.
There’s just something about the connection readers and
booklovers have with cats. There are libraries with cats (the book DEWEY talks about that) and bookstores with cats. And tons of writers have cats. I have cats. The next photo is of my cat
Whiskers who was on the cover a few years back of RT Book Reviews Magazine. Note how he has his elbow on a pile of books.
What about you? Are you a cat lover? Or a dog lover? Tell me about your pets and the role they play in your life. Do you talk to them like Megan talks to Smudge? How did you come up with their name? And please know that every book of mine that you buy helps feed a hungry cat – my hungry rescued cats! Plus Whiskers has diabetes so I have to give him shots twice a day. But we love our pets and they love us back. So tell us about your pet or pets.

Cats and Dogs
Hi Cathie,
Loved this post! I am a certified animal lover. We had 4 cats and one dog until this past year. Sadly, two have passed on.
We still have our 14yr old black cat named Cleo, short for Cleopatra and yes, she does think she is Queen of the Nile! She has a love/hate relationship with our male cat Caesar (go figure). Neither of them have any appreciation for our black and white Lab mix, Shadow, they barely tolerate her :) And yes, she is MY shadow.
Thanks for sharing!
True love is...TIMELESS
Cats and Dogs
Funny how each animal has its own distinct personality isn't it?
Rocky the Wonder Dog
Hi Cathie,
Right now I have Rocky the Wonder Dog who turned 17 and 6 months this past Friday. He really is a wonder dog! Daughter Sarah had Samantha the cat until we lost Samantha to cancer when she was only 9 years old. Rocky still misses her. Rocky and Samantha would play like two little kids and even though he reallly is a wonder dog, Samantha always had the upper hand - or paw. She would mess with him just as Garfield would mess with Odie and Rocky would come back for more. Like I said, he still misses her. So, if dogs and cats can get along, why can't politicians! Okay, we won't go there.
Love your books Cathie and maybe dogs and cats should be running congress! Now there's an idea worth purring over.
Cats and Dogs
Great post and I totally agree that if cats and dogs (note cats get top billing - grin) can get together, then so should politicians.
Cats & Books
Cats and books go together marvelously! If I ever have my own bookstore, there will be a cat wondering or lazing around. There's a local bookstore that has just that and I love finding him when I go there! My oldest is Snickerdoodle, and as you can guess, I was naming after cookies. MiniMe looked just like her mother. BA, well, she's BA. And Rolla got his name because he would roll over at you feet. My mother's cat always tried to move the book out of HER way if my mom reading and not paying attention to her. Her name, by the way, was Moodie, because when she wanted to be louder than her already LOUD purr, she would growl affectionately! ;)
Cat names
I love hearing how cats get their names (and dogs too) - and then there are the nicknames which for Whiskers include Mr. Whiskers, Whiskey and even Fine Fellow.
Pets & Books
I love both cats and dogs but currently am only owned by one cat. She's a gorgeous tortoiseshell calico which inspired her name "Callie." She's a talker and I definitely talk to her. Her predecessor, Pepper, was a black cat I had for 17 years and was my buddy even though he was high maintenance. Thought I'd go catless for a while after he died but I only lasted 2 weeks--I needed something to come home to. Callie was great therapy for losing him--she still makes me laugh after 7 years! She's an adopted stray and my only regret is I didn't have her as a kitten. I'm a librarian so I obviously love books and the cat/librarian combination is fantastic!! My facebook profile photo shows Callie in her desk chair, sitting right next to mine. Thanks for your great stories Cathie!
Pets and Books
Donna I know what you mean about going catless - that's about how long I lasted as well. And that was years ago. If only I could teach my cats to cook for me (grin). Thank you for the positive feedback on my books! My cats thank you too!
Love books, love cats!
Love your books Cathie and you are right in that there seems to be a connection between book lovers and cat lovers. I love to curl up with a good book and my cat (or 3 cats) on my lap!
Love cats
Hmm it's hard to fit 3 cats on a lap - I've done it but it is a balancing act. I'm so glad you enjoy reading my books! My cats thank you too!
