Mrs. Goodfeller

I VOTE WE ALL WORK TOGETHER

It’s Election Day and all the polls indicate the presidential election is neck-and-neck at this point; quite literally either candidate could win.

So, before the dust settles and a winner is selected I have a request to make: no matter who ends up being elected let’s all promise each other to do the right thing and work together to help our country heal and become as strong and stable as it possibly can.

In other words, for the next four years let’s not think in terms of supporting the party, whichever party that might be. And let’s not think in terms of backing conservative or liberal views.

Instead, let’s simply think in terms of doing and supporting what’s best . . . best for the country at large. Good ideas can come from members of either political party. Let’s be concerned solely with finding what’s workable and not worry about a particular political philosophy.

The problems we face as a nation are real and very serious. Nevertheless, they can be overcome, but only if we make a concerted effort to pull together and think in terms of the greater good, rather than one side’s greater political influence or strength.

It’s time to be mature and responsible and wise.

Let’s expect this of ourselves and let’s DEMAND it from our elected officials, whoever they might end up being.

If a Tree Falls in the Internet

We’ve all heard the old question “If a tree falls in a forest and there’s no one there to hear it, does it make a sound?”

Well, I’ve got a similar query: “If I post audio files on my website and Facebook account, will anybody give a ding dang dilly?”

Allow me to explain:

I’m thinking of making an audio recording of my debut novel, MRS. GOODFELLER, and posting it as free, chapter-length podcasts online. This would allow anyone who’s interested to take a listen to as much, or as little, of my book as they wish.

And at absolutely no cost to themselves.

But before I go to that time (pretty extensive) and expense (relatively minimal, but still something) I need to think this through and decide if it would be a worthwhile endeavor.

This is where you come in.

I’d very much appreciate you weighing in on this idea. Do you think you and others would have any interest in listening to me read some or all of my manuscript? My family and friends assure me I don’t sound like a screech owl . . . except when I tell them something they don’t want to hear.

And they all assure me they can’t hear enough of or about MRS. GOODFELLER. Of course, it’s important to remember that the gift-giving season is almost upon us and my nearest and dearest might quite simply be running scared.

So, if I end up making the recordings, I promise to have some scrupulously honest and trustworthy individuals (audio professionals, even) who’ll give it to me straight about my screech owliness take a listen and advise me as to whether this project is post worthy.

I’ll then only make it available online if these individuals give the recordings a thumbs up.

To make it official, I hereby pledge no human’s ear drums will be injured or destroyed as a result of listening to my audio recordings of MRS. GOODFELLER.

SO WHAT DO YOU SAY, DO YOU HAVE AN OPINION ON WHETHER I SHOULD UNDERTAKE MY AUDIO PROJECT? IF SO, PLEASE TELL ME WHETHER YOU VOTE YAY OR NAY. A FREE COPY OF MY DEBUT NOVEL, MRS. GOODFELLER, WILL BE RANDOMLY AWARDED TO ONE PERSON WHO LEAVES A COMMENT BELOW BEFORE THE NEXT WRITERSPACE BLOG IS POSTED.

One List at a Time

Although I’m blessed to have a number of friends in my life, five of us are close enough that we typically get together for dinner every Friday night. That’s not a hard and fast rule, but when life and work allows, come Friday we’re chowing down together somewhere. We also make it a point to celebrate each other’s birthday and we have a Christmas party for the five of us as well.

When it comes to gift giving occasions, we take pity on one another and make a list of items we’d like to receive. Going off the list is always an option, but we’ve all found having a list from the recipient can be a huge help. Even when not used, these lists give a great jumpstart to the gift-selection process. And in this busy time and world, who can’t use a little help with making things—anything—quicker and easier?

The honorary male member of the group, a husband of one of the other members, was at first appalled at the idea that we would be so gauche as to make lists of items that we’d like to receive. He felt presents should only be given after careful thought and consideration on the part of the giver, in order to be a true expression of the affection that individual feels for the recipient.

Then he gave his new wife a couple of presents that came straight from his heart—but were nowhere close to hers. Since it quickly became apparent their tastes in many things were diametrically opposed, she strongly, and consistently, encouraged him to take full advantage of her lists.

He began to understand that having a little assistance when selecting a present in no way diminishes the affection with which it is given.

Now, almost a decade later, he’s the first to make his personal gift list available to the rest of us, and he adheres pretty darn closely to ours when buying something for the rest of us.

You gotta love a man who’s trainable!

HOW ABOUT YOU, DO YOU LIKE HAVING A WISH LIST WHEN SELECTING A PRESENT FOR SOMEONE OR DO YOU PREFER TO WING IT? A FREE COPY OF MY DEBUT NOVEL, MRS. GOODFELLER WILL BE RANDOMLY AWARDED TO ONE PERSON WHO LEAVES A COMMENT BELOW BEFORE THE NEXT WRITERSPACE BLOG IS POSTED.

Divine Decadence

No doubt it says a lot about just how wild and wanton I am that my idea of a truly decadent weekday is one where I leave work early—maybe by as much as 30 minutes—and sneak out to an afternoon movie.

Indulging in buckets o’ popcorn, candy and soda naturally factor into this scenario, significantly raising the cost, in cash and calories alike.

But the truly dissolute, such as myself, pay little attention to such considerations. I simply throw caution and cash to the wind, as well as the box office and concession cashiers, and proudly ask for the ticket and munchies I desire. Because that’s what this type of afternoon is all about: what “I” desire.

What my best friend or significant other or anyone else wants at that point matters not at all. For this one typically two-hour period my single point of focus is what I want and where I want to sit to enjoy it.

Makes me a little dizzy with power just to think about it.

There have been times over the years when I’ve snuck out only to run into folks I know who are going to the movies with someone else, perhaps even a group. When this happens my acquaintances have been known to look at me with faintly disguised pity, obviously thinking I must be horrifyingly lonely, little realizing I’m looking back at them with the same amount of compassion.

Being with someone else at that particular moment is the last thing on earth that I’d want. I’ve snuck away so the afternoon could be all about me, me, me.

So, I’m taking this opportunity to make you a special pinkie-swear promise: should we ever run into each other in the lobby of a movie theatre on a future afternoon, standing alone and carefully clutching our own personal tankards o’ treats, I’ll be happy to give you a knowing smile, a bit of a nod, perhaps even a slight wink; but from this day forward we must both understand that under no circumstance will either of us even hint that we might sit next to each other.

Instead, it’ll be my pleasure to wish you well and to walk away knowing I’ve just encountered a truly kindred soul.

Whether by yourself or with others, I wish you all many hours of happy movie viewing in the months and years to come! May all your chairs be comfortable and your popcorn fresh!

So, if you’re looking for a good read to curl up with as you sip on your first mug of either apple cider or hot chocolate this season, be sure to consider such top notch selections as . . .

The reissue of Robyn Carr’s BLUE SKIES (reprint from 2009). This mass market paperback was released August 28, 2012, by MIRA and tells the story of Nikki Burgess who survived a terrible marriage and a worse divorce. She's just about given up hope of ever finding happiness. But when her ex-husband suddenly dies, she gets custody of her kids again—and a chance to start over.

Dixie McPherson, on the other hand, has had way too much love. She has eleven tennis bracelets, dozens of trinkets, piles of sexy lingerie and a tarnished reputation when all she ever wanted was true love, a partner and a family.

Carlisle Bartlett is loyal, kindhearted and the funniest guy slinging drinks in the back of an airplane. But he has an ugly little secret. The only kind of love he's used to comes with bruises.

When Nikki, Dixie and Carlisle are offered the chance to join a new airline in Las Vegas, they don't hesitate. With nothing to lose and everything to gain, these three friends are going in search of their own blue skies.

Jayne Castle’s THE LOST NIGHT, Rainshadow Novel #1, was released by Jove as a mass market paperback on September 4, 2012. This story makes it clear that even the mysterious world of Harmony has people who don’t quite fit in. They’re drawn to places like Rainshadow Island, a beautiful sanctuary where anyone can feel safe—and where secrets are closely guarded...

Schooled in an exotic form of martial arts, and with the ability to detect the auras of dangerous psychic criminals, Rachel Bonner and her dust bunny companion have found peace and quiet on Rainshadow Island, operating a bookstore and café.

But her tranquil new life is thrown into chaos when Harry Sebastian, the descendant of a notorious pirate, arrives to investigate strange developments in the privately owned woods known as the Preserve.

Immediately drawn to the amber-eyed woman, Harry must tread carefully. While Rachel’s special talents can help him track down dangerous rogues who have violated the Preserve, they can also sense the heart of darkness within him. But desire can weaken the strongest of defenses—and leave even the strongest man wanting more…

This August 28, 2012, Harlequin reissued Diana Palmer’s BETRAYED BY LOVE. Cattle rancher Jacob Cade rarely denied himself anything—except for Kate Walker. Kate was his younger sister's best friend, and therefore off-limits. But when Kate returns to Jacob's ranch for his sister's wedding, he sees Kate with new eyes. She is older and living in the city; surely she has become much more worldly. The time for restraint is over.

Kate is naive about a lot of things, but she knows what Jacob is offering, and it isn't forever. And yet she's been in love with him for as long as she can remember. If a couple of nights in his arms are all she'll ever have of him, aren't a few precious memories better than none at all? Even if that surrender breaks her heart….

Catherine Anderson’s 2-in-1-release SWEET DREAMS: REASONABLE DOUBT/WITHOUT A TRACE, published by Harlequin HQN as a mass market paperback on September 25, 2012, is a reprint. In REASONABLE DOUBT to claim her inheritance Breanna Morgan must return to Crescent Moon and face the doubts she fled so long ago. But she soon discovers that prowlers, vandals and unnatural noises have invaded the isolated mining claim that has been in her family for generations. And her new neighbor, Tyler Ross, is not the first or the last to warn her away.

When the threats become all too real and Tyler offers his support, Breanna accepts him with open arms. Until she has cause to wonder if his choice is for her benefit, or for his own….

In WITHOUT A TRACE finding the natural parents of someone who has been adopted has become routine for genealogist Sarah Montague. But in Michael De Lorio's case, her only lead is the nightmare that has haunted him all his life—one he suspects is a terrible childhood memory. As Michael and Sarah delve deeper into his past, they find danger at every turn. And their only hope for life, and love, is to rebury the past and disappear without a trace.

A mass market paperback, Jayne Ann Krentz’s FIRED UP: Book One of the Dreamlight Trilogy (Arcane Society #7), is a reprint from 2009 and was released September 25, 2012, by Jove. More than three centuries ago, Nicholas Winters irrevocably altered his genetic makeup in an obsession-fueled competition with alchemist and Arcane Society founder Sylvester Jones. Driven to control their psychic abilities, each man?s decision has reverberated throughout the family line, rewarding some with powers beyond their wildest dreams, and cursing others to a life filled with madness and hallucinations.

Jack Winters, descendant of Nicholas, has been experiencing nightmares and blackouts—just the beginning, he believes, of the manifestation of the Winters family curse. The legend says that he must find the Burning Lamp or risk turning into a monster. But he can’t do it alone; he needs the help of a woman with the gift to read the lamp’s dreamlight.

Jack is convinced that private investigator Chloe Harper is that woman. Her talents for finding objects and accessing dream energy are what will save him, but their sudden and powerful sexual pull threatens to overwhelm them both. Danger surrounds them, and it doesn’t take long for Chloe to pick up the trail of the missing lamp. And as they draw closer to the lamp, the raw power that dwells within it threatens to sweep them into a hurricane of psychic force.

SILVER BELLS: MAN OF ICE/HEART OF ICE (Man of the Month), a 2-in-1 reissue by Diana Palmer, was released in hardcover by Harlequin HQN September 25, 2012. In MAN OF ICE, after a less than magical one-night stand, cynical Dawson Rutherford needs the help of the woman he considers seduced him. Barrie Bell, still reeling from their encounter, is ambivalent about aiding his scheme. She's kept a secret from Dawson…one that could free them both to love again.

HEART OF ICE tells how, despite knowing she dislikes him down to his arrogant bones, Egan Winthrop invites Kati James to his ranch to research her next novel. He assumes she knows everything about love. But when passion flares between them, Egan is surprised at how Kati's heat just might be able to melt his heart of ice….

Harlequin HQN released AN OUTLAW'S CHRISTMAS (McKettricks of Texas) by Linda Lael Miller in hardcover September 25, 2012. With his wild heart, Sawyer McKettrick isn't ready to settle down on the Triple M family ranch in Arizona. So he heads to Blue River, Texas, to seek a job as marshal. But in a blinding snowstorm he's injured—and collapses into the arms of a prim and proper lady in calico.

The shirtless, bandaged stranger recuperating in teacher Piper St. James's room behind the schoolhouse says he's a McKettrick, but he looks like an outlaw. As they wait out the storm, the handsome loner has Piper remembering long-ago dreams of marriage and motherhood. But for how long is Sawyer willing to call Blue River home?

As the gray skies clear, Piper's one holiday wish just might bring two lonely hearts together forever.

Loving that e-Book Reader of Mine

After finishing the third book in Charlaine Harris’ popular Aurora Teagarden series earlier this evening, I was thinking how glad I was I could immediately acquire the fourth without putting on makeup or getting redressed. It’s a wonderful thing to not be held back by either time nor place.

This realization inspired me to play with that old standard Barbara Streisand used to belt so beautifully, Loving that Man of Mine.

Oh, my e-book reader, I love it so.
It’ll never know.
What’s the difference if I say
I’ll go away,
to library or store,
‘cause they have digital books and more.
If I forget to recharge, my life is just despair
But I don't care
When I turn it back on and take it in my hands
The world and its screen are bright, all right
What's the difference if I say
I'll go away
When I know I'll come back on my knees and look under the bed for it someday
For whatever my e-book reader is
I am its forever more. . .
or at least until a newer/better model is mine to score.

All this being said, as I’ve urged you before, please be sure to show your local independent booksellers all the love you can. If they sell books electronically, visit their websites to do your downloading, my friends. If they don’t, enter their brick and mortar sites as often as possible to purchase your selections in print.

When you do, both you and your community are sure to benefit, not only from your sales tax, but from you supporting a vital spot that allows you and others to meet (in many cases), be entertained, learn and grow.

Long live local bookstores and those who support them!

Hey, Hey, Boo Boo

First and foremost, let me make it very clear that I’ve never seen an episode of Honey Boo Boo. I’ve only watched trailers for it and read or overheard the thoughts of others who have tuned in to the program.

From the promos, it’s readily apparent the young lead character has lots of charisma. No question the show is getting plenty of attention and I understand it’s drawing tremendous ratings . . . to the point that it has either tied with or exceeded the viewing audiences for both recent political conventions.

I’m thrilled for the entire Boo Boo family, the parents of which, I’m told, are self-proclaimed rednecks. I wish them much continued success.

What makes me even happier than their current good fortune, however, is the fact that—since it is a “reality” show—Honey Boo Boo is NOT shot in my home state of Oklahoma.

A friend of mine and I discussed this fact at cheerfully amazed length while out to dinner recently, after she told me that on a recent episode the family attended a redneck fair, where the mud wrestling event included attendees personally getting down and dirty.

Let’s be honest, residents of my state are often portrayed as members of the great unwashed. It’s enough to give a writer, or any other Oklahoman, a complex.

Typically, whenever I’m watching national news and some type of disaster has struck my state, “the person on the street” who is asked to comment on these events is missing several key teeth, apparently hasn’t bathed for several days, and chose, on that particular day at least, to don a stained promotional cap first worn three or four generations earlier.

Delightful folks all, I’m sure. Yet, not necessarily natural spokesperson material.

Especially since their actual statements tend to run along the lines of “We was standin’ right there when Mama pointed at the sky and said ‘Here it come, here it come.’”

I’ve attended a number of dinner parties where much of the conversation centered on who these people on the street are, where they usually spend their time, and why they suddenly appear whenever disasters strike and members of the media appear.

Because these folks are so often seen representing this state, it comes as no surprise to those of us who live here when individuals who’ve never visited Oklahoma tend to have low expectations regarding our intelligence and level of sophistication.

It saddens us somewhat, but we understand.

All of this to say, although I have no idea where Honey Boo Boo is taped, I’d like to assure the citizens of that state that I and my fellow Oklahomans understand that the actions taken and thoughts expressed on that program do not necessarily portray those of other residents of that locale.

In other words, we feel your pain, folks, and won’t judge you all on the basis of one show. Hang in there. This too shall pass.

BIDDING SUMMER ADIEU

Now that Labor Day has come and gone, it’s official: Summer is over. My white sandals are going in the back of the closet and my faith in soon finding a movie for grown-ups at the local cineplex is growing.

Since I live in Oklahoma, I’m pretty sure that any day now the temperature will drop below three digits and continue to stay lower, at least until next May or June. In a week or two, new television shows will make their debut, and with any luck, several will even be worth watching and not involve the “reality” of people making fools of themselves or belittling others.

Leaves will fall, sweaters and Halloween masks will appear, the air will turn brisk and everyone will have that extra bounce to their step that means Fall has arrived and the promise, excitement, and potential disappointment of the holidays are in the air.

So for now I say “So long” to replacement shows, books known as beach reads and “tent pole” blockbuster movies , but “Pleased to see you” to television series, both returning and new, books likely to sell well for Christmas, and movies considered Oscar contenders by their distributors.

Now Summer 2012 is but a memory. And although saying goodbye is a bit of a relief, I’m sure to be even more excited to welcome it’s younger sibling, Summer 2013, in just nine short months.

The seasons, they are a changin’. The good news is, they always will.

JUSTIFIED IS ONE APPROPRIATELY NAMED TV SERIES

If, like me, you’re an ardent fan of Elmore Leonard’s novels, you’re sure to enjoy the television series titled Justified.

I consider this one of the most aptly named programs ever, for anyone who carves out the time from their busy schedule to watch this show on a regular basis is sure to find that effort . . . well, you guessed it, justified.

Quirkily believable characters spouting memorable lines in interesting story lines, many of which will seem familiar to Leonard fans, are the order of the day. Lead character, Raylan Givens, played by a fascinatingly laid back, though always potentially dangerous (at least to criminals) Timothy Olyphant, was introduced in two of Leonard’s novels, Pronto (1993) and Riding the Rap (1995), and one novella, Fire in the Hole (upon which Justified is based), which was published in When the Women Come Out to Dance (2002), a collection of Leonard’s stories.

A number of pivotal scenes from episodes in the television show’s first season were directly lifted from those earlier published works. However, these scenes, and Raylan’s personal life, have been changed a bit for television as well. As a result, they end up feeling more like recognized old friends than rehashed stories, which adds to the reading viewers’—those who first met Raylan through the books mentioned above—interest.

Do bear in mind that if you abhor violence or watching folks who haven’t found a way to always live up to their full potential as human beings, this might not be the series for you. However, if you’re a fan of Leonard’s books, I think you’ll love the television show as well.

Even more good news: the first couple of seasons are now available on DVD, so if you haven’t seen the series yet, it’s not too late to watch it from the beginning. And while you’re at it, why not read a Leonard novel or two as well?

We all work so hard these days, it only makes sense to spoil ourselves with prime entertainment when we get the chance.

Go ahead, read . . . watch, you’ll be absolutely Justified to do so!

ARE YOU A FAN OF ELMORE LEONARD’S NOVELS? EVER SEEN THE TELEVISION SHOW, JUSTIFIED? OR DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE QUIRKY AUTHOR WHOSE WORK YOU’D LIKE TO SEE TURNED INTO A TV PROGRAM? IF YOU ANSWERED “YES” TO ANY OF THE ABOVE—OR EVEN IF YOU DIDN’T—PLEASE CHIME IN AND TELL US WHAT YOU THINK. SOMEONE WHO LEAVES A COMMENT WILL RECEIVE A FREE COPY OF JAYCIE CASH’S DEBUT NOVEL, MRS. GOODFELLER; WHICH HAS A FAIR NUMBER OF QUIRKY CHARACTERS OF ITS OWN!

AND THE WINNER IS . . . WHOEVER HAD THE MOST FUN

The Olympics are such a special time.

It’s thrilling to watch people who’ve trained a lifetime for this one moment you’re viewing, as they not only compete against the best and toughest from around the world but also against themselves and any self-doubt or sabotage that lurks inside.

I love to watch those who are extraordinary do their absolute finest, don’t you? I’m incredibly touched every time I’m given the opportunity to witness someone dare to step away from the mundane and shine in the light of their own innate talent and skill.

It takes amazing vulnerability and guts to truly standout in life, to say I’m me and this is what I’m good at and then give it all you’ve got in front of the entire planet. If there’s any truer drama (outside real life and death struggles) in the world, I either haven’t seen it or I haven’t had the understanding to recognize it.

That said, I have to admit my take on this or any competition is a little different from most sports enthusiasts.

You see, for me, it’s not about who wins their place on a podium or gets their picture on the front of a Wheaties box. It’s not who gets the endorsement deals or a lifetime of recognition and accolades . . . it’s about the person who truly lives in the moment of that day, that race, that second and adores every portion of the experience.

Winners are those who participate in events—or any aspect of life—because that’s who they are and that’s what they love to do and that’s what makes them feel most truly alive.

Real winners may not make it as far as the trials, much less the actual Olympics. We may not remember them or ever know their names.

But that’s okay; they don’t really need us or our adoration.

The real winners in life are those who are truly alive in this and every moment of their lives. They are the people who know who they are—and are true to themselves—throughout their lives.

Even if no one else is watching.

HOW ABOUT YOU, WHEN DO YOU FEEL MOST TRULY ALIVE? HAVE YOU EVER KNOWN SOMEONE WHO WAS CONSISTENTLY HIS OR HERSELF? A FREE COPY OF MY DEBUT NOVEL, MRS. GOODFELLER WILL BE RANDOMLY AWARDED TO ONE PERSON WHO LEAVES A COMMENT BELOW BEFORE THE NEXT WRITERSPACE BLOG IS POSTED.
