THE POWER OF PEOPLE

Throughout our years, people come and go in our lives, many with such positive impact that we never forget them or what they have done for us. I’m truly blessed to have met so many wonderful readers and authors through my writing. I can’t think of anything more special than touching one another’s lives in ways that change the way we think about the world and sometimes the way we think about ourselves.

One of the best parts of being an author is the people who read our books and the impact our writing may have on them. I can’t tell you how much it means to me to have readers tell me that something I’ve written has touched their lives in some way, often in unexpected ways.

I’d like to share about a special person who came into my life several years ago, Tina Gerow, aka Cassie Ryan. Many of you know Tina/Cassie, a wonderful writer, but an even more special person. She has a brilliant smile, a positive and upbeat attitude, and an enthusiasm for life that is contagious. She’ll have you laughing and smiling and just plain having fun.

Tina has been taken suddenly and seriously ill. She has an affliction called Arteriovenous malformation or AVM in her brain which has led to multiple surgeries and an extended stay in ICU. Please take a moment to visit Cheyenne McCray’s Place and read this note about Tina and how you can help. Please send your prayers and positive energy out into the world “with Tina’s name on it.”

This is where “The Power of People” comes into play. Together, all of us can make a difference in some special way.

Please leave a comment with your positive energy going out into the universe with Tina’s name on it. Everyone who comments goes into a drawing for NO WEREWOLVES ALLOWED . . . I’m giving away two copies in conjunction with the release of VAMPIRES NOT INVITED due in stores this on November 30th.

By Royal Decree

In my other lives, as Kathy Lynn Emerson and Kaitlyn Dunnett, I write mystery novels, so it’s a given that I like solving puzzles. The books in the SECRETS OF THE TUDOR COURT series, however, are not mysteries. Although they contain elements of intrigue and danger and the occasional spy, they are essentially fictionalized biographies of less-well-known but interesting sixteenth-century women who played minor but significant roles in Tudor history. Does that mean there are no mysteries to solve? Not from my point of view!!!

Historical novelists owe it to their readers to do extensive research, even though only a fraction of what they uncover will actually appear in any given novel. I often hear grumbles about how difficult it is to find some elusive fact, but for me research is both painless and fun and those hard-to-find details are an exciting challenge to track down.

How I see myself contributes to the enjoyment. I am not a student doggedly researching an assigned topic for a term paper. For one thing, I picked my own subject. But beyond that, given the kind of detail I need to make my characters come alive, I am more like a gossip columnist digging for dirt. Or a genealogist, looking for family connections. Kinship was a major motivating factor in the alliances of the past, whether between royal families or among cousins at court. I’m also a detective, trying to determine who was really behind a particular plot or even, occasionally, a crime. I’m a jigsaw-puzzle fan, searching out the missing piece that fits together with what’s already there. And above all, I’m a treasure hunter, looking for that nugget of pure gold that will answer a question, clarify a situation, or provide insight into why one of the real people I write about did what history records that he or she did. My version may not be what really happened. I am writing fiction, after all. But when I’ve dug deep enough and put enough tidbits together, even the most mystifying events from history suddenly have an explanation that makes sense to me.

In every book I write, there is at least one ah-ha! moment where I solve a historical puzzle to my own satisfaction. In BY ROYAL DECREE, the story of Elizabeth (Bess) Brooke, my heroine is caught in a difficult situation. She falls in love with a man, Will Parr, who already has a wife. Under King Edward VI, he’s granted a divorce and Bess is allowed to marry him, but when Mary I takes the throne, this decree is invalidated and Bess is forbidden to go anywhere near Will. If Mary dies and Elizabeth Tudor becomes queen, the situation will be reversed again, but at the beginning of Mary’s reign, no one expects Mary to die anytime soon. At a point toward the end of the novel, when things are looking very bleak, Bess is approached by the French Ambassador. History records that he asked her to take a message to Princess Elizabeth, which she did. This fact is well documented, but nowhere is it explained why he’d choose Bess to undertake the errand, or why he’d think she would be successful in reaching Elizabeth, who was closely watched by those loyal to the queen.

I could have invented a reason. I would have, if necessary. But a little deeper digging finally paid off as I was completing the rough draft of the novel. In order to find out more about the French Ambassador, perhaps discover a physical description of him, or even a portrait, I acquired a copy of a book titled RIVAL AMBASSADORS AT THE COURT OF QUEEN MARY. I did not have high hopes. Many of the books I borrow on inter-library-loan turn out to focus on some economic or political thesis to the exclusion of the sort of domestic detail I’m seeking. However, this time I was in luck. The account of the ambassador sending Bess with a message did not clarify matters, but in another part of the same chapter I discovered that the ambassador had a spy, a man who was one of the secretaries to the queen’s Privy Council. That man was also one of Bess’s brothers.

The moment that tidbit registered, everything fell into place for me. Of course, the ambassador would think of Bess—her brother must have told him about her. Perhaps he even suggested her for the mission. Now, this may seem like a little thing, but it was the light in the darkness for me. Not only did it give me the missing piece of that particular puzzle and allow me to flesh out the scenes I was writing, but it also played into the theme of family loyalties that permeates the novel. In revision, Bess’s brother took on a bigger role than he’d had before. And why not? Bess and several of her brothers had connections to Wyatt’s Rebellion because Thomas Wyatt the Younger was their cousin. And Wyatt’s mother lived with the family during Bess’s girlhood. And through Lady Wyatt’s second husband, who held an important post at the Tower of London, Bess had family present when she accompanied Lady Jane Grey there during the abortive attempt to make Jane queen instead of Mary. It all connected. All the pieces fell into place, covering more than a decade of historical events in the course of the novel. That single nugget led me to an entire treasure chest full of gold and jewels.

The author will be giving away a copy of BY ROYAL DECREE to one lucky person who comments. The author has not received her author copies yet so there may be a slight delay.

Thanksgiving Memories

When my son moved away, I asked him to try to spend either Thanksgiving or Christmas with the family.  He’s a fireman and single.  He usually works on Christmas so that his coworkers can spend that day with their children.  I recently asked him if he would come home for Thanksgiving this year.  He responded that he’d seen me only a week ago, what’s the big deal.

Thanksgiving is a huge deal because it’s one of the few times during the year family members and friends come together and reflect. Gathered around the dinner table the conversation often veers to events from the past and family members who are no longer with us--which echoes the theme of my latest series “Quest for the Golden Bowl” – remembering and recording your family’s history.  (The final title in the series is DEADLY INTENTIONS --coming May 2011.  The most recent title, ISLAND OF DECEIT (June 2010) is still available as are the first two titles, GOLDEN NIGHT and LONG, HOT NIGHTS.)

Thanksgiving dinner is usually held at my home.  This year, I’m going to give everyone a blank book so they can record things they remember or some interesting information about family or even themselves.  After all, we’re making history as we go.

There should be at least one memory-keeper in every family. Hopefully that person will include these memories in anything they do and preserve the books for the future.

Please share some of your memories with us.  And have a happy and blessed Thanksgiving.

Soundtrack for PAGES OF PASSION

I love to write to music. It helps me to get into the rhythm and mood of a story. Sometimes I create a soundtrack. For the first time I’ll share one with you. PAGES OF PASSION is my latest release (October 26, 2010) about Noreen Webster, a cynical romance writer who meets a real life hero (Michael Vaughn) while on a cruise.  To develop the soundtrack for this book I used Aretha Franklin’s greatest hits.

Here are five songs that make up the soundtrack:

(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman—Noreen’s Song. She sings this in a karaoke contest.

You’re All I Need to Get By— Michael’s song. Used soon after he meets Noreen.

I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You)—Arlene’s theme. She’s Noreen’s sister and in love with a man who will break her heart.

Until You Come Back to Me—Joy’s theme. She’s in love with Michael and a romantic rival of Noreen’s.

Baby I love You—the theme for Noreen and Michael.

(All from the album 30 Greatest Hits: Aretha Franklin)

I’ll give away an autographed copy of PAGES OF PASSION to someone who comments.

Luck vs Love

My latest book is called LUCK BE A LADY so you’d think it would be full of good luck items and not a black cat.  But my heroine Megan is all about breaking stereotypes.  The highly-coveted starred Booklist review for my book talks about that.  Megan is a retro-loving librarian who has her life turned upside down when brash Chicago cop Logan Doyle crashes her cousin’s Vegas wedding.

Logan’s arrival sends Megan on a whirlwind tour across Nevada with Logan in a vintage 1957 Chevy Bel Air.  But once Logan and Megan return to their hometown of Chicago things really heat up.

The first thing Megan does when she gets to her condo is to talk to her black cat Smudge.  I got the inspiration for Smudge from a kitten that I rescued several years ago and fostered until my friend Suzette took her in and adopted her.  The photo is of that black cat I rescued whose real name is Sweetie Fabulous  -- she was a model in a previous life J.  Readers online at my Facebook page helped me come up with the name Smudge for the cat in my book.

There’s just something about the connection readers and
booklovers have with cats.  There are libraries with cats (the book DEWEY talks about that) and bookstores with cats.  And tons of writers have cats.  I have cats.  The next photo is of my cat
Whiskers who was on the cover a few years back of RT Book Reviews Magazine. Note how he has his elbow on a pile of books.

What about you?  Are you a cat lover?  Or a dog lover?  Tell me about your pets and the role they play in your life.  Do you talk to them like Megan talks to Smudge?  How did you come up with their name?  And please know that every book of mine that you buy helps feed a hungry cat – my hungry rescued cats!  Plus Whiskers has diabetes so I have to give him shots twice a day.  But we love our pets and they love us back.  So tell us about your pet or pets.

Rave reviews for LUCK BE A LADY:

“Linz (MAD, BAD AND BLONDE, 2010; SMART GIRLS THINK TWICE, 2009; BIG GIRLS DON'T CRY,2007) has written another fast-paced romantic comedy with just the right amount of heartfelt emotion.” Booklist starred review

LUCK BE A LADY has romance, heartbreak, trust, and forgiveness.  This was a great read.” Romance Readers Connection

Peace on Earth

LAKESHORE CHRISTMAS is a love story about finding the most precious gift of all–peace. I love this photo, taken from my yard on a winter morning. It embodies the spirit of this story. In the book, Eddie and Maureen struggle against each other, but ultimately it’s only by coming together that they find the gift of inner peace. I loved exploring this concept in the book. Maureen is one of my favorite characters–a librarian with a passion for books. When budget cuts threaten a library closure, she turns from meek and mild to fierce and passionate. That’s the moment I love in a love story–when her deepest desires take flight. It’s only then that she can move to a place of true peace and serenity.

I would love to hear from readers about that peaceful moment that comes over you in the deepest part of winter. Comment below about those magic moments.

After this book was published in hardcover, I had a lot of questions from readers–sometimes frustrated readers–who were perturbed by the open-ended storyline involving Daisy Bellamy, Julian Gastineaux and Logan O’Donnell. The good news is, all will be revealed in the upcoming MARRYING DAISY BELLAMY, which will be out on January 25. I hope I did her justice!

One of my favorite things about this books is the Appendix–a collection of Christmas cookie recipes, and music to go along with the baking. Here’s an outtake–a fabulous recipe that didn’t quite make the cut.

Oreo Bars - from the Kraft website

34 OREO Cookies, divided

1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter, melted

1 jar (7 oz.) Marshmallow Creme

3 squares Semi-Sweet Chocolate, chopped

1/3 cup chopped Walnuts

PREHEAT oven to 350°F. Coarsely chop 8 of the cookies; set aside. Finely crush remaining 26 cookies; mix with butter. Press crumb mixture firmly onto bottom of greased 9-inch square baking pan.

TOP crust evenly with dollops of marshmallow creme, leaving 1/2-inch border around all sides. Sprinkle with chopped chocolate, walnuts and chopped cookies; press lightly into crust.

BAKE 15 min. or until marshmallow creme just begins to brown. Cool completely in pan on wire rack before cutting into bars to serve.

Jeweled

In JEWELED, the heroine, Evangeline, has not experienced her own emotion since she was a child. Her magickal gift is stealing emotion from others, trading it, and “manufacturing” feeling in others. A part of her gift is the ability to build strong walls against emotion for herself and after a very traumatic experience as a child, she did just that.

But when the palace where Evangeline lives is taken over by a mob during a bloody revolution and she’s turned out into the street, penniless, all her walls coming tumbling down and Evangeline is forced to learn how to feel again.

There to help her is Anatol, an adept of light and illusion. He is also a “Jeweled,” one of those with enough magick to earn him a precious jewel set into his flesh and be considered good breeding material for the royal family, (that, over the years, has bled out all the magick from their line through inbreeding).

The backlash of Anatol’s gift of being able to sculpt illusion is the ability to see truth. He sees that Evangeline is a very special person, but she needs lots love and support to get through the sudden changes in her life. He has loved for her for a very long time and is willing to give her anything she needs.

Complicating matters is Gregorio Vihkin, the scholarly mastermind behind the revolution that has disrupted Anatol and Evangeline’s lives. When the upheaval in the streets threatens Anatol and Evangeline’s lives, he takes them in.

At first Evangeline hates Gregorio for what he’s done, but when she gets to know him and sees  the truth behind their former pampered lifestyles and how it hurt the rest of the people, her feelings for Gregorio warm. Warm a little too much for Anatol’s taste. Soon both men are in love with Evangeline and Evangeline has more than she can handle.

Together, in a world gone mad, they must find a way to come together.

Please enjoy a small excerpt from JEWELED, which releases tomorrow! I hope you enjoy reading this book as much as I enjoyed writing it.

~*~

“All I’ve ever had in my life to use was my looks and my willingness to have sex.” She swallowed hard. “Honestly, Anatol, I should go to the Temple of Dreams. It’s all I’m really suited for.”

His jaw locked and something dangerous flashed in his eyes. “We’ve had this conversation before.”

“Why are you so against the idea of it, Anatol? We could both go there to work. I know you say you’re in love with me, but that’s just silly—”

He rounded on her, arresting the end of the sentence in her throat. Fire jumped in his eyes. “Not silly, Evangeline, true. I don’t want to make love to any woman but you. I couldn’t do it. So you go, if you think that’s what you want.” He turned away. “I won’t stop you.”

She chewed her lower lip and let emotion rise up to swamp her for a moment in punishment. She deserved it; she’d hurt him. Wrapping the blanket around herself, she stood and walked to him. “I don’t want to leave you,” she murmured at his back.

He turned and pulled her into his arms. “Good. That’s a good thing to hear, Evangeline, because I don’t want you to leave me.”

She wrapped her arms around him, letting the blanket fall to the floor and his body heat warm her. Nuzzling her nose into his chest, she inhaled the scent of him. “I want you to . . . make love to me, Anatol. I want to know what it feels like.” The words came out as a whisper, like she was afraid to say them too loudly. She wasn’t sure why.

His body tensed against hers. “Don’t tempt me.”

She gave a soft laugh. “Haven’t you noticed that’s exactly what I’ve been trying to do?”

“Yes, I’ve noticed.” He made a tortured sound in his throat. “The scent of you tempts me. The sound of your breath tempts me. You tempt me even when you’re not trying.” He turned her and she saw that the cracked head -to -toe mirror was directly in front of them. “Look at yourself, Evangeline. You’re beautiful.”

She smiled. “Like I said, it’s been my currency in life.”

He moved her closer to the mirror. “I don’t just mean your face, hair, and body. Look into your eyes, hold your own gaze in the reflection.”

She met her eyes, blinked, and looked away. Staring into her own eyes was uncomfortable.

He gripped her shoulders. “No, look, Evangeline. See what I see.”

Her face flushing, she raised her gaze to her eyes again. They were gray, the color of metal. That’s what she noticed first. But if she went deeper, which felt a little like diving into her own soul, she saw . . . vulnerability. Honesty. Emotion. Joshui, so much of it. Her eyes seemed to swim with it. She saw strength, too.

Anatol dropped his mouth near her ear. “Your eyes have always been this way, even when you were at your worst. There was always beauty in you, complexity, empathy, caring, and I always saw that beauty. Always. No matter what you did or what you said to me, it was there.”

Her lips parted as she stared into her own reflection in a way she’d never done before. Anatol was helping her see herself in a way she never had.
His hands rested on her hips as he took a slow sweep of her body. “You are, of course, also beautiful in the more traditional sense.”

“Touch me,” she murmured, meeting his gaze in the reflection.
